Mani,

We love to see new Kiva apps. Some discussions on previous Kiva apps are available on our engineering blog at http://blog.build.kiva.org

As far as licensing, you can read up on Wikipedia on the differences between the 2, but LGPL licensing is mainly used for code libraries, whereas an application such as yours would normally be licensed GPL.

Just make sure to check out our Terms of Use http://www.kiva.org/legal/terms

Here's one part to pay particular attention to:

"Licensee may not use the Licensed API for any other purpose (including without limitation any commercial purpose) without Kiva's prior written consent. Further, under no circumstances will Licensee benefit commercially or financially from a Developed Application or any Kiva data."

Cheers,

Hello all,

I am Mani from Bangalore, India. Me and 2 of my friends are building Windows Metro application for Kiva. We are creating a front-end in C#, fetches & display content using Kiva API.
Application will be open-sourced under GPL or LGPL (which is preferred GPL or LGPL?). Also hope to upload the application to the windows store.

So my question is, Is the community 'ok' with uploading the application to windows store ?
Do you wants us to upload the source-code to Kiva's git repository. Right now we have the source code in bitbucket.org

Thanks,
Mani Chandrasekar

Thanks for the information. I will take a look at your engineering blog.
We are not planning to sell information or add advertisements in the application. This app is done as a project to explore Windows 8 and demonstrate touch capabilities. So we choose Kiva which might also help kiva in reaching few more people.

Should we have to get permission to run the application and showcase the capabilities of the platform in developer events?
If so whom should we contact to get the consent?

Thanks,
Mani

Mani,

Sorry if my previous post did not completely answer, as long as you are not using the app for commercial purposes, then no extra permission is needed, the app just needs to abide by the terms of service.

As for the showcase, I can talk to Noah about adding it, once you guys have it up and provide us a link.

Looking forward to seeing your app.

Cheers,
