We have BBB integrated with Moodle. It has been working fine for 2 years, until now.
It is on a linux server. Here are the problems

1. Chrome (59.03071.86)
-- I click on "join session" in Moodle, and it opens up new tab for BBB
-- then I get a message that "A plugin (Shockwave Flash) isn't responding.
-- stopped dead in it tracks.

2. Firefox (54.0)
-- Click on join session, BBB comes up
-- Dialogue for microphone -- click on microphone, get a box: Firefox MIcrophone Permissions, says to click on microphone icon
-- No microphone icon appears
-- Both microphone and camera have "always" permissions for the BBB url already
-- Reload, try web cam, Adobe Flash crashes

3. Opera (47.0)
-- click on join session, BBB comes up, Audio test has NO microphones listed, CAN'T FIND web cam

How can I solve the problem now?

From what i have read, Adobe is getting away from Flash and is planning to discontinue Flash entirely in the near future. What is BBB doing to move out of the flash dependent mode and into something else that is and will be supported?

Thanks.

Hi

We have BBB integrated with Moodle. It has been working fine for 2 years, until now.

Good to hear.  What version of BigBlueButton are you running?

1. Chrome (59.03071.86)
2. Firefox (54.0)

Can you try both of these browsers with

and let us know if you encounter the same problems.  This server is running the BigBlueButton 1.1 release.

> From what i have read, Adobe is getting away from Flash and is planning to discontinue Flash entirely in the near future. What is BBB doing to move out of the flash dependent mode and into something else that is and will be supported?

Can you provide references to the articles that you have read that state Adobe is planning to discontinue Flash?

In contrast, Flash support is actually growing.  Adobe recently started supporting Linux again with the latest versions of Flash.  For a list of supported platforms, see

Also, Microsoft is replacing IE with Edge, it's next generation browser.  Edge has the latest version of Flash built-in (similar to Google's Chrome).  Furthermore, if you move to Windows 10, Microsoft automatically keeps Flash up-to-date for you as part of the regular Windows Updates.

For more details, see

We at the BigBlueButton project are also working on an HTML5 client, but we are also improving the Flash client as well.  The HTML5 client will enable us to give users access to BigBlueButton from a mobile device.  For more information, see

Let us know the results of testing against https://demo.bigbluebutton.org/.

WE HAVE MAJOR PROBLEMS TODAY

We have 8 people who are online - no one can get their microphone to work. Can you explain why?

We are using the 0.9 version on Moodle 3.1 - both have worked well for quite awhile.
But recently more and more browsers are not allowing the microphone to be used.
The items are showing in the list, and the microphone is showing in the sound controls, but when you choose the microphone nothing happens.

Hi there,

If your running an old version of BigBlueButton, is it an option for you to setup a new (separate) server and install BigBlueButton 1.1?  See

You can also try the latest version anytime on our demo server, see

Hi Stephan,

> Can you respond/explain the Firefox statement

Absolutely.  Adobe has announce that they will discontinue support for Flash at end of 2020 ... which is just over 3 years from now.

You can see our statement on this which we posted on July 25

In short, we will continue to improve the BigBlueButton client (it's what everyone is using) as you can see from our work on BigBlueButton 2.0.  We will, in parallel, continue to work on transitioning to the HTML5 architecture for you.

Our goal on the HTML5 is to target the mobile experience for Android and iOS and have a first version for the viewer out before the end of this year.

You'll see more development on the BigBlueButton client and the HTML5 client over the next few months.  We'll post updates to the bigbluebutton-dev mailing list.

Adobe announced its roadmap to stop supporting Flash at the end of 2020.

Would this mean that Microsoft's Edge and Win 10 is merely a temporary measure?
Curious on your insight as we rely heavily on flash for many online courses that are paired with BBB.
thank you again for all you do!

Hi Stephan,

We will continue to support and improve the BigBlueButton client in Flash for the coming years.

In parallel, we are also working hard on an HTML5 client that will work alongside BigBlueButton.

Three years is a very long time ... you can look forward to updates to BigBlueButton and to Flash.

For some parts of BigBlueButton, we've already been transitioning away from Flash.

Case in point: the audio in BigBlueButton 1.1 and 2.0 is pure WebRTC (the call is initiated from the BigBlueButton client, but all the media transmission and receiving is done by the browser).  If the user is not using a browser that supports WebRTC, BigBlueButton automatically falls back to Flash-based audio -- this gives us the broadest possible support for browsers.

Flash isn't going away in the near-term, and Adobe will continue to support it for another 3+ years.  Google and Microsoft will both continue to build Flash into their browsers for the next few years.

We'll also have you transitioned over to a pure HTML5 client long before then end of 2020.

Regards,... Fred

Thanks.
