Just wanted to say Hello from over here in Farmersville..   I use Linux(Debian) as my primary OS here at home.  Haven't been successful in finding any user groups in my area, especially Linux ones.

Thanks..

Welcome. To the best of my knowledge, the group is mostly inactive. I usually always reply if you just want to chat. I use Linux mint. Lugs are a tad hard to find now a days.

Eddie, must you always point out that this group is inactive? :p

On topic: Hi, welcome to the BakoLUG mailinglist.
We are 'a bit' inactive, but some of us should be able to answer
questions you may have.

(I'm currently using Trisquel 5)

Hello.
Man, it has been a while, lol.

I recently started using Linux again, this time in a VM environment.  I have Ubuntu 11.04 and the latest version installed in VM. I'm using an Acer 4830T-6841.  Having some trouble getting the most out of my video but I'm working on it.  Right now I'm not sure if its a driver install issue or a config issue with VM.

Hi,

What virtual machine are you using? (VMware, VirtualBox, qemu, etc.)

I'd say the GNU/Linux/Unix landscape is quite bigger than it used to be as there are a lot more user friendly and entry level Linux distros. I think the problem is 1) there aren't a whole lot of people in Bakersfield interested in Linux, 2) it's not what many people are going to socialize around, 3) and those that are serious about it are probably more Administrators, in the profession, or simply use it and aren't out looking for a User or Meetup group. I personally have been liking Ubuntu (Debian) Mate Desktop, I've been using it for my primary development desktop for about a year. Can't bring myself to seriously use the UI of plain Ubuntu. I also am very fond of SliTaz and TinyCore (but I have my reasons). Any my NAS is running FreeBSD. Linux Mint is nice though, use it and CentOS, as well as Debian, at work.

Hey there. I just joined this group for the same reason. Not a lot of folks here in Bako know that Linux even exists!

Well I think a lot of people know it without even knowing it. I mean a lot of people use Android and Mac OS X or newer, both based on a variation of Linux the kernel even if highly modified. And now-a-days with virtual machines, it's so easy to at least try out Linux. That, and did you here that Windows is going to include a bash-linux shell in Windows 10? I believe it's only active if you enable developer tools, but it's interesting none the less. That and Windows 10 technically has support for Raspberry Pi (but it sucks, I think it's just meant to interface with a Windows environment, Microsoft trying to get the Linux market share no doubt).

I highly recommend making this a G+ group to increase activity and sharing. I use FreeBSD and Debian based distros. For example, My son uses Debian and my wife's laptop has Mint. While an advocate of Linux and open source solutions, I do not work in a tech field. Just a comedian in the know.

Regarding W10 bash: from what I read here[1] it may as well be an emulator staying within it's own "bash box".
"Third, note that Bash and Linux tools cannot interact with Windows applications and tools, and vice-versa. So you won’t be able to run Notepad from Bash, or run Ruby in Bash from PowerShell."
