'D1' Route in South Australia.

Hi Group,

Out driving around north of Mannum today and I noticed numerous
signposted 'D1' (similar to the Sydney ones) routes routings around the
area (Including a crossing of the River at the Purnong Ferry). There
were legs up both sides of the River towards Murray Bridge it seemed
and also a Leg runnings north past Walkers Flat (Making 3 different
directions to my count). Unfortunately didn't have my camera with me to
grab any shots. I assume it's some kind of Detour around the
City and/or Swanport Bridge should something close the Freeway or
Bridge. I'll have to head out for a drive with the camera sometime to
clear up where it actually goes.

Also great to finally see some B36 signs up around Mannum, and finally
some clear B35 turn signage at Palmer (was the missing link in the B35
for AGES).

The other week, I saw a D2 going from Murray Bridge near the freeway, up Hindmarsh Road, Adelaide Road, then the old Princes Highway to Monarto then Ferries McDonald Road to the freeway. Also, D3 from the freeway at Monarto, Ferries McDonald Road, old Princes Highway, then through Callington back to the freeway.

I finally got out for a Drive to get some Photos of a few of these D
routes that we've been talking about.

Brett's Description of the D2 and D3 are spot on except for 1
interesting thing, the D2 when turning right onto Old Princes Highway
has a hinged sign (Which was showing D2 straight ahead onto the M1 when
I was there) so I assume the D2 is a two option route, depending on
exactly where the event that needs to be Detoured around is located.

On the D1, I have a feeling this is also a dual-option route, there was
no signage on the Eastern side of the River on Old Princes Highway
where it approached the B55 turn off, and D1 signage from BOTH
directions (i.e. over the 'Murray Bridge' and from the B55) heading
back to the M1 (everywhere along the route otherwise it's only signed
directly along the route). I was not able to get a good look at the
north bound signage on Swanport Road as it approaches Adelaide Road so
I wasn't able to see if it was hinged but I suspect it might be, again
there was D1 signage from Adelaide Road westbound into southbound
Swanport Road.

So my theory goes the D1 can either follow (westbound Old Princess
Highway, over the Murray Bridge, left onto Swanport Road and back to
the M1) OR as much as I've been able to work out, on the Eastern side
of the River: Old Princess Highway, Karoonda Highway, Burdett Road,
Bowhill Road and then north to Walkers Flat (and then
probably Blanchetown). On the western side it goes Swanport Road, Mannum
Road, north towards Sedan (then Blanchetown?).

Then there's the D4, which I also noted in Strathalbyn the other day
when I didn't have the Camera with me, It appears to head off at
Callington towards Strathalbyn, and if I recall correctly from the
other day towards Meadows from there. I'll have to do another driver to
be sure where that ones heading, but given what I've seen of it already
I wouldn't be suprised if it ends up coming down through Clarendon for
a complete bypass of everything west of Callington.

Hi Darrin,

I really enjoyed the photos. Nice to see some SA stuff pop up.

The majority of the signs are quite good too, a big improvement over older SA designs

Quite a lot of detour options, I think that it might become confusing though.

Maps have now been posted on the SA Government website showing the detour routes

They seem to be focused on getting the real heavy vehicles on a proper detour, hence the length of some of them. I suppose that light vehicles will find their own way, regardless. This is similar to practice in the UK where the official diversion routes often seem unnecessarily long but they need to adequately cater for heavy vehicles.

Excellent idea. And also helpful for out of towners too. nothing worse than being a tourist and stranded in unfamiliar territory
