Took a photo of this sign today. I don't like it. I can see what they're trying to achieve but it just looks out of proportion.

That top panel ... dear oh dear. What sign configuration was there before?

The old signs are shown on GSV:

I don't recall what it looked like before the new hospital at Westmead opened, which is what makes the sign look terrible. This is a great example of when the sign should be separated into two separate panels instead of a fugly patch.

As for the assembly itself, it is rather unusual. I suspect it might be a relic of when the F4 started at this location and the straight ahead sign probably said

The hospital patch makes the sign just too big. Totally agree about separating the hospital and the SR44 information into two different signs

Seems they pretty much replicated one crap design with another. I would suggest in the rush to roll out MAB signage, we will see more of this copying, rather than redoing something properly

The attached was probably designed by the same person who did the sign beneath the hospital oddity.

I'd lol if I saw a similarly styled road name patch on the M5. Trasicad would have to work overtime to do that...

Another yucky one. I did notice that the earliest "WESTERN MOTORWAY" signs that went up (including this one) all had MOTORWAY spelt out - I wonder if this was intentional? If it was, I assume that's what lead to the yucky designs as its a really cumbersome road name to go with a short focal point like Sydney.

Should've designed it like this one (obvious with the ID tacked on below):

Speaking of that photo - note that the hospital sign is not the same width as the sign above. In WA, whenever there's an assembly of signs like that, all signs are designed to be the same width. I thought it looked stupid at first but it's growing on me. Looks best when they are like the example shown, i.e. nearly the same but not quite. If you end up with a sign that has 1.5-2m of green space then it looks a bit worse.

I like the idea of the same size signs like WA. Looks a lot tidier, even if you do have more blank space.

As for spelling out names on NSW signs, seems RMS has begun not abbreviating the suffix of roads, ie, using WESTERN MOTORWAY rather than WESTERN MWY

I think it is only a few specific roads they have done this on and I'm not sure that it's still current practice.

Heaps of new signs around using the standard abbreviations for road names.
