Is there any information available about future AppScale releases?  I.e. what's the timeframe for 1.6?  What's new relative to 1.5.1?

Hi Doug,
AppScale 1.6 will have the following features:
GAE 1.6.1 Python Server
Upgraded Datastores (Cassandra 1.0.7, Hypertable 0.9.5.5, HBase 0.9.4-cdh3u3)
Upgraded Hadoop 0.20.2-cdh3u3
Fast and easy data backup mechanism for Cassandra
Autoscaling within nodes for applications
More fault tolerance
RabbitMQ for the taskqueue system
Experimental full indexing support with Cassandra
Bug, security, and robustness fixes
And more...

No set date on when the release will come out, but you can grab most of these features from the main branch and build an image from scratch. If you have feature requests please feel free to add them here:

Thanks,
Raj

Thanks for the info.  What about backends?  Cassandra support seems to be getting a lot of attention -- is Cassandra the preferred datastore backend?

Backend are really low on the priority list because you already have access to the VM so you can just run your backend as a process.

Cassandra is pretty fast and our default, but HBase and Hypertable are also two very good Big Table clones. Each of them have their advantages and disadvantages.

Thanks,
Raj
