Hi!

Sorry for probably annoying question.
I can't understand about physical keyboard layouts. In "Settings" there is settings for physical keyboard. But russian doesn't work. I saw notation about already launched apps, but for newly started apps it doesn't work also. Somewhere i see url to android-x86 repo (probably, i lost that url) and there was only en, fr, de, it layouts. Is it right that russian one doesn't exists? Why it appears in settings? Can i create own without rebuild of android? Can i have 2 layouts (en and ru) and switch them with keyboard shortcut?

Thank you for answers!

There is no Russian layout so far.
Welcome to contribute if you have.

Thank you for the answer. Can you advice me?
1. Where are layout files placed?
2. What is file format (some specification?)
3. Does android support layout switching?
4. Will it be possible to install new layout w/o rebuilding?

So, why don't you all just install External Keyboard Helper? Its paid on Google Play, but it's working! :) Totally worth try. I spend already days and days on wondering how to locale hw keyboard to Czech language, then found this app and problem solved.

and here is demo, so you can try if it works for you:

Hi!

Cool, it is really working. My wife is glad :)

But it is not my way. I can't accept the fact that I need additional software to enable russian layout when actually I need only one file. But anyway, thank you for this link.
I understood file format, so I'll create it. Only one question is still opened: can android switch layouts by shortcuts (w/o additional software).

Shortcuts? Just question...why you need to? Anyway, if you're using Android 4.0 and up, when you are entering text, down on right side of your screen is little icon which if you click on, then you can change input mode easily, I think.

Unfortunately i can't change layout there fast (for physical keyboard). Anyway, keyboard shortcut for layout switching is usual way for notebook/desktop. I understand, that first-class devices for android are touch-devices, but it would be very handy to have such ability.

There is no keyboard shortcut for layout changing.
But you can change layout via Settings
(this is an android-x86 specific feature)

You can look at layout files under
/system/usr/keychars
to see how to create your own layout.

I've tested the RU files with an external USB keyboard while my builtin was kept in german. It is a workaround and may not be useful (viable) for you.

Cool. Thank you for layout, you save my time.
I've made small trick, I've added English layout on capslock/capslock+shift. So now i have capslock key as switcher to English layout )))
Attaching it, may be it will be useful for somebody. Hope soon I won't need it cause of internal support of alternative layouts ;)
