USB WiFi that works?

Hi,
I have looked every way to try and find USB WiFi adapters that work with Android X86.
(Apologies if someone has posted an answer).

Would it be possible to state a selection of known to work USB Wifis?
Then continue to include these in further builds.

Everything else mostly just works great and I deeply appreciate the work folks put in to get it so.

Regards

So this dongle will work with all android x86 4.0? Will it work with the TegraV2 ? if so I can go to Newegg tomorrow it is right down the street and pick this up. I then could get a complete android 4.0 on my tablet.

I haven't done an indepth watch at all defconfig files of all targets, but I think there is little chance the good drivers have been included in any of them.

Even if you can compile a build on your own, you have to verify if the drivers suppport the good vendor and/or product ID...

May work "easily" with older Android-x86 version, but not quite sure with ICS as it uses more stricter rules.

Otherwise the drivers should be something like rt2x00 and other related and libs or so.

No need to mention other OS such as Linux or utils based on Linux kernel because they simply don't work the same way as Android-x86 at all !!!
With most Linux distros, almost all drivers are integrated into the kernel or built as modules at once, and most of the time we don't have to bother about the drivers due to udev and related ! That's also why Linux distros are mostly universal (no need to mention some really specifics such LFS or Gentoo,...), when Android(x86) uses a single target mechanism build process because of mdev !

Windows is the minimum, as all drivers are written above all for this OS by the manufacturers... lol

Then I said I haven't done indepth search for Android-x86 at the time written, BUT just Tegav2 because Alteran mentioned it and I didn't find out the mentioned drivers set. ^^

So I guess the maintainer of this Tegav2 target will have to add them in it when he will have time to put his hand on. ;-)

If it works fine with ICS, so good ! But is the 150 N version really usefull when most routers only support G version ??? lol

The best the better I guess but in that case, I think a simple USB Ralink 2500 dongle will do the same job for even cheaper and easier to find out (maybe somewhere in a drawer ???) :-))))
.
If you made the tests by yourself, then good to know also, but I'm not sure all users can find easily a newegg shop all around the world and find this specific device easily either. ;-)))

I just tried above mentioned adapter on a d934gclf2 booting Tegav2 4.0-rc1 iso on a test machine and it's no go.

I find the reverse as since i have nothing but trouble with mainted support for both NICs and WIFI adapters in linux since day 1 (mid 90's) dropping in one or more distros per release:-)

Yep. I didn't need to do the test but just watching at the target source code was easy to know. lol ;-)

I understand what you mean, but I was saying that even if a device or a drivers works with any based Linux system, there is no guarantee it will work with Android(x86)... ^^

And some times, you have no choice, as an example, for better performance, you'd better use an DVB-T CardBus or ExpressCard than the USB version, then comes all the troubles to get it work on something else than Windows. :(

So does anyone know what wifi dongle works with the current tegav2 ics? I see not many drivers for wifi for Tegav2. My tablet has rt2860, and no drivers in the build under Tegav2.

Yea just as I thought lol. I have no clue why it was a release. No internet connection at all under Tegav2 means what it is good for nothing. You can't see if gpu is working right, you can't check if the browser is working at all, you can't see if any part of the os is working right with out putting a video or apk right on it with usb.

I build roms and post to XDA and this would not be a release, but a beta.
I seen in post's how people say this or that is not in the package because it was not on the device they where writing it for. I would see the reason behind that if it was just a rom for like a phone not a open source for many devices.

what is a few extra mb's to a os install with broad range of support! sounds more limited and unlike a true linux.

I didn't say there was no wireless support at all, I just said there is no USB wifi. There are 2 wireless modules set :ath9k and BCM4329.

Then you could try to use a USB to Ethernet adapter if you have wired network... ^_^

May be not totaly compatible with all Google apps and may not work also with some other apps, but at least could use the browser, youtube and others you have to test by yourself...

You may be able to run Android Market/GooglePlay, but again most probably you won't be able to download apps from Market.

Here are the module drivers available, but you'll have to find out by yourself the hardwares :

CONFIG_USB_CATC=m
CONFIG_USB_KAWETH=m
CONFIG_USB_PEGASUS=m
CONFIG_USB_RTL8150=m
CONFIG_USB_USBNET=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_AX8817X=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_CDCETHER=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_CDC_NCM=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_DM9601=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_SMSC95XX=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_GL620A=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_NET1080=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_PLUSB=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_MCS7830=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_RNDIS_HOST=m
CONFIG_USB_NET_CDC_SUBSET=m
CONFIG_USB_ALI_M5632=y
CONFIG_USB_AN2720=y
CONFIG_USB_BELKIN=y
CONFIG_USB_ARMLINUX=y
CONFIG_USB_EPSON2888=y
CONFIG_USB_KC2190=y
CONFIG_USB_NET_ZAURUS=m

AXIS based unbranded, Belkin F5D5055, Apple USB Ethernet Adapter, ... I can't remember the other adapters name, but you should be able to do a search with your best friend : Google. ;-)

Alteran, don't remember Android is NOT a Linux ! Then even though adding extra wireless or network drivers is not really a problem, as I said in another thread the main problem with Android is mdev vs udev, and also Mesa... ^^

Here is a gift specially for you :

:-D

Finally if you can cook ROMs on XDA, why don't you build this Tegav2 target yourself so you can add all the wireless drivers you want ? ;-)

You just need to modify the tegav2_defconfig file and then : make -jx iso_img TARGET_PRODUCT=tegav2

Of course you have first to set your building environment and download the ICS-x86 repo tree, in a linux system... ;-))))

I have made a semi working one. it is very buggy, and the wifi keeps dropping. I was just hoping some one would be doing the same thing with a 2860 involved. I seen a 3.0.8-android-x86-atom. however it is built on the eeepc kernel.
I some times get over pushy lol since I been working on 4 roms from 4 diffrent phones. One I am trying to get the 2d working, and the other one I been working on the camera. So I have not put more then 2 or three hours in to the this x86.
I have came in to some new coding for the apps for the windows 8, so I it has been getting much more of my time . I must say I know android is not complete linux frame up. still it was based on the same point of a open source code.
Now that I had to redo my work laptop, I installed a 250 gb of 11.10 ubuntu so that I can now do a couple of things on the long train ride to work and from work. However I still think the rom will get more over the x86.
Atleast the tablet I got has a great copy of windows 8 working.

However thanks for the info...

How that can be ??? lol

If Tegav2 build works fine for you BUT wireless, you just have to copy or modify the target by adding your driver. Better compile it as module and modprobe it in the tegav2_info file, and just build !

You just need some minutes to do the changes and a "little longer" for the build, depending on your laptop. lol

well I finished the complete rebuild of this custom tegav2. I have no more issue with the wifi at all, and I took out so much usless code. After testing a few seen some errors in the gpu driver, fix that so looks like flash in running great thru browser as well as streaming video. I used it to play citiville lol. I did see some ui work in need but it is fine for now.

Thanks for making me do it my self haha

I am still disappointed the way things have to go. load install all working is how releases are to be. over the past 10 years I have never let anything become a release if there was any major issues. Logitech, motorola, NEC and google have been falling way short on this. Now I have this x86 tablet working, I am switching over to bang on logitechs door to get some code.

See ? Not that hard ! :-))))

It's a pity you had to do the changes by yourself and it's beyond the scope of most end-users !!! :(

Android and Android-x86 are single target builds and this won't change !!!

Tegav2 build just as most other builds have been created for a specific hardware and work with these specific specifications, even if most users use them for other devices and hardwares...

At least, maybe you could put additional wireless drivers and USB Wifi drivers and some other stuffs to make it a little more "universal", then host the build somewhere and publish the link on this forum with some informations about hardwares compatibility so other users could download it if they do need your build. :-)
