Can anyone recommend some good online Android tutorials or good books?

There are some free Android books here: http://www.it-ebooks.info/search/?q=android&type=title
Can anyone say anything about any of those books?

After spending about fifteen years as a Java developer I decided to jump
into Android development about two years ago.

I read several of the best rated books on Amazon, worked through the
coding exercises and still did not feel I had a great grasp of the
Android development process.

Then I came across the following tutorials by David Fisher at the
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. David Fisher is one of the best
teachers I have ever encountered (exceptional clarity in a very clear
step by step process). Also, it is a good learning experience to be
able to stop the video lecture and work through the code.

Here is the link to the course materials and the tutorials:
https://docs.google.com/document/edit?id=1BVrqUPsvlq8Ww-HhVD3g1OVc32M6E7xDk3vLP3wJbAo&pli=1

Do not click on the first link on the page: "Android Development at
Rose-Hulman". This link goes to the current course taught by someone else.

Scroll down and you will see the course material.

The videos are also available on iTunes (free):
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/csse490-android-development/id409819366

Good luck!

Hi. There are lots of good online resources; just Google it.

Also, Android in Action 3rd edition (disclaimer, I am co-author).

Also, keep an eye on my blog as I publish articles on Android every so often. My latest Android article is this one: http://weblog.cenriqueortiz.com/mobility/2012/11/21/article-parse-cloud-based-services-for-android-apps/

I've read at least a half dozen Android books.  Most of them are fair.  But I highly recommend Mark Murphy's suite of on-line books at http://commonsware.com/ .  The books are updated more often than I can keep up.  You purchase a subscription for a period of time and get all the books he has (including source code and updates) during that period.  He's clearly the most readable technical writer in the Android world, which is worth the price alone.

And I also second the tutorials by Bucky Roberts of http://thenewboston.org .  He has tons of very useful tutorials that are complete and free on youtube.  I'm not at all ashamed to say I've watched and learned from dozens of them.

But you *will* need to learn to read and understand Google's official android docs.  It's what programmers do.
