The benefit of a mask is that it puts something between a potentially infected person and one who is not.

I think the social distancing is a second measure to prevent spread when people are not wearing masks.

IOW the virus can travel a lot farther when people are not wearing masks.

In isolation units masks are a must because the nose and mouth are two main ways germs can enter the body. Especially airborne germs. It's the same principle for Covid.

If the virus can't spread among people then it cannot live long and it will die off. It needs hosts and it's survival rate is proportionate to people practicing universal precautions, or not.
