I can't find an smb.conf file anywhere, and I can't find it anywhere online.
Any clues? I need to change a locking setting.

Seems you may need to create ....

/etc/nsmb.conf The global configuration file

~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf
The user's configuration file, conflicts will be overwritten by the global file.

http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man5/nsmb.conf.5.html

As always w/ UNIX/Linux,even SX, google's your pal.

I've heard mixed stories about SMB being broken in 10.7 and 10.8.  Most of the grumbling is that XP and older clients have trouble authenticating to SMB shards on an OS X 10.8 host.  10.7 had some sysctl tricks to allow deprecated connection mode.  It changed in 10.8.  I'm sure if you nose around on a search engine that you'll find an answer since 10.8 has been out since July 2012. Here are couple clues I found in a quick search:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4697?viewlocale=en_US  (older reference, but applicable)

It is probably best to use the GUI for configuration and not trying to manaully tweak things in a sudo bash terminal session.  OS X has a tendency to like to spontaneously make changes to stuff to make it the way OS X thinks you ought to have it.

If you are trying to sort out an installation cabbaged up by a neophyte, if you're lucky, time machine was on, and you can simply go back to before the point where the damage was done.

Bill,

Can you tell me where the setting to turn opportunistic locking on and off on the SMB client end of OS X is in the GUI?
I can't find such a setting to save my life.

I had trouble finding fresh documentation.  I don't have 10.8 becuase my Mac hardware, despite being a core2 duo machine, is not up to running 10.8 according to Apple's dictum.  Go figure.

Perviously, the vifs command could be used from a sudo'ed shell to edit your fstab, but now it is autofs, or something else?...

CIFS mounting option  documentation (general):

If you can figure out where Apple has squirreled away the mount, ir seems you should be able to add -o op=0 to the mount string to disable oplocks.  Turning off oplocks may significantly degrade performance if the architecture of the application is such that it does a lot of small random writes.

Helpful information for debugging CIFS protocol:

Apollogies for not being any more helpful than that.
