Good Day

Please note - for new members - that we will migrate to our new location (www.turnitaround.co.za) over the next month or so.

After this we will switch off this facility.    The new site was developed in collaboration with Richard Wilkinson of "TurnitAround".  We felt this was the right platform based on our "Eyes and Ears" of the mountain concept.  Many Neighbourhood Watch organisations are signing up as well.

Please view their website and then sign up as a member of the Table Mountain Watch network where you will see - in Google Maps format -  recent incidents on the mountain.  We will back capture incidents over the next few weeks to include the 160 incidents to date.

You will also receive information and where possible 'early warnings' of attacks - via SMS and Email if you select these options on your membership profile.

Following @TablemntnWatch on Twitter will see these messages sent directly to your cell phone (smartphone) so that you can make an informed decision with regards your activities on the mountain.

Please forward these to other mountain users - as part of your 67 minutes of Community Service (back dated a little and if you still have free minutes of course...:>)

Stay Safe
Andre

Hi Andre  -  Thanks for the heads-up.
Did try to list yesterday but it (the site) kept telling to enter my/a valid e-mail address which is what I was doing, so could not register.
Is/was there a problem ?!?

Still strongly feel that we/the-powers-that-be should be pro-active and in all sincerity be looking as "sting" operations, and not be re-active after the fact and some more poor traumatised adults and children are put off the mountains, our mountains, for life.
This re-active procedure has brought us precious little if anything at all.

Some REAL cops (male & female), dressed and looking like your run-of-the-mill tourists, and dis-arm / disable / and arrest these bastards when they 'fall prey' to their attack(s).
The attack on Lions Head was just too awful for words. Injured adult male / traumatised wife and kids.  This just has to stop and trying to catch these after the fact has got us no-where.
Surely this is at least worth a try.

In future they will not be sure if possible prey are genuine tourists or 'cops in drag' so to speak.

Rgds
John.

Hi Charles  -  Thanks for the support.

We/they have tried and have been trying everything else for yonks now and it has not worked.

If the bloke heading this show cannot even get the drug dealers & peddlers of the streets of my residential suburb that is supposed to be his paid and main beat, what chance has he got with a Table Mountain wide domain covered in tsoties ?!?
It's just talk-talk meeting-meeting waffle-waffle yet the scumbags still hold a rein of fear over all, locals and foreigners, who use OUR beautiful
mountain and its precincts.

These 'sting' operations and their crew(s) should be the SAPS or other suitably equipped (physically/mentally/security equiped & geared) persons/ organisations who are capable of apprehending these bastards as soon as they are 'attacked'.

Being 'dressed' as your common or garden tourist (fake camera; binocs; bags; trail/mountain bike etc etc) will be the enticement to attack our 'sting' experts who will then be able to neutralise and arrest them, call for backup, and remove them from the berg to the comfort of the nearest police cell ASAP.

Once the tables are turned, these vermin will then have to think twice about attacking 'tourists' as they will not be sure as to who are the genuine ones or who are of the 'sting variety.

I for one am not suggesting that us normal mountain types should get involved in these 'Rambo' tactics, but that only the real 'experts' should be involved here. They could concentrate for starters on the well known attack spots / haunts of Rhodes Mem., and the Pipe Track, and the Lions Head circular climb for starters. Maybe even above Kirstenbosch Gardens or at the Constantia Neck area, and hopefully we will round these swine up reasonably quickly.  If our 'Stingers' vary their locals and vary their timing and days of the week, from one spot to the next, they can hopefully out guess out wit and out smart these tsotsies.

We must stop being re-active and start being pro-active, and we must stop working harder and start working smarter !

We don't need the short-back-and-sides, safari suit, comb in sock brigade here but genuine look alike tourists. Camera and binocular cases (empty) can be slung over shoulders in stead of the real items, and haversacks filled with paper to simulate valuable goods. Hell man the boy scouts could think of ways to do a good job.  We also don't need the General (my ass) Cele bunch here either that will shoot first and ask questions afterwards, but seasoned cop types who know what a 'sting-ops' is all about.

This 'sting' suggestion of mine has got nothing to loose as the other methods have so far been piss poor to date as far as I'm concerned.
The cost(s) involved here are probably way less than what they are having to fork out right now trying to cover and re-act all over the place at any one time, as compared to the costs of lost tourism locally and internationally. And why should we mountain loving citizens of Cape Town and our families be held ransom to the fear of putting our hiking/walking/climbing feet on our precious and beloved Table Mountain chain of The Fairest Cape in all the Circumference of the Earth ?

What do the rest of our members think or what 'other' suggestions can they bring to the table ?

Rgds
John.

Hi John,

I tend to agree with the 'sting' approach -- even though there are
risks to whoever volunteers to take on that role.

Hi people

I agree with John: we need to pressure the authorities into setting up sting operations. We always seem to be reacting to the crimes; it’s time we acted before them. Extra rangers? I haven’t seen them yet and I’m on the mountain up to 3 times a week (though I admit I stay away from the hot spots) – has anyone seen these extra patrols? I’d love to know if they were active.

Yours in frustration
