While we're on a roll, should we start talking about food too?

As I already said, I would call myself a vegetarian, which for me means that I do not eat meat (of any sort, including fish/seafood), but I do ingest dairy. While the idea of a vegan diet very much appeals to me (and a lot of my meals are vegan), I would like to be able to obtain all the vitamis and minerals I need through my food, as opposed to in the form of supplements, so that's why I have not cut out dairy completely. That said, I am happy to be vegan and/or gluten free or anything else-free on tour to accommodate more restrictive diets than my own. I have to say that in my experience restrictions on ingredient lists make cooking a more fun and creative process, so I'm looking forward to the challenge. Also, even though this isn't so relevant to our food mandate discussion, I love food. I love grocery shopping. Food just makes me happy :).

Thanks so much for taking initiative and getting things started
Marina!
I am not really anything exactly. I don't eat any meat except fish/
seafood occaisionally but less and less recently.
I don't eat cheese (because I don't like it at all. . .weird, eh?) and
avoid milk, but do like yogurt and icecream :) hehe I also eat eggs.
I'm totally willing and able to adopt a vegan diet and be flexible for
the tour, we made it work last year with vegans, gluten-free, and
people who didn't like quinoa or oatmeal!

I'm taking this opportunity to encourage you all to discuss your food preferences, what ethical dimensions of eating are personally important to you and any favorite recipes you want to share! You can save the actual decision making about food for Training Week - we will set aside time for you to create a Food Mandate together - but getting your assumptions, passions and questions on the table now will make those face to face discussions much more productive.

Your Food Mandate will need to address your preferred ways to source your groceries, what kinds of things you want to eat or not eat and how to dispose of the waste created by cooking for a large group. The first and third items often depend a lot on the generosity of those who host you - much of the food will come through donations. People may not always donate to you according to your preferred diet, though, so you'll need to consider what to do when hospitality and diet don't line up easily.

Food is one of the best parts of the tour!

In terms of food, I am pretty easy going.  I currently don't have any restrictions on my diet, I eat almost everything and don't have any food allergies.  Many of my friends have different dietary restrictions so I have been exposed to many different ways of eating, and I am open to trying out any of them.

That being said, food issues that are really important to me are eating healthy and trying to eat local.

Great!  I think I mentioned in an early post my specific dietary restrictions (no cheese, milk, meat except fish, usually). I'm ok with a vegan diet for the trip but some things we will probably need to talk about as a team (besides whether or not veganism is a reasonable choice for everyone), is how to plan our menus and what food we buy.  Are we trying to go for local and/or organic? What about nearly expired or salvaged food?  what about dumpster diving (with permission of course!)? How does Fair Trade play in? What about the water involved in the production of the foods we buy and/or our cooking preparations?  Are there ways we can limit the amount of water we use through our consumption? What about waste due to packaging?
These are all things that can and probably will play into our food mandate and become discussion points either throughout the ride or during training week!  We could start addressing some now if anyone has opinions or questions they would like to raise!

Hey everyone.

I'm pretty easy going as far as food goes.  I'll eat everything.  I'm kinda excited for the food part of the trip seeing as I've never been on a strictly vegan diet or even a vegetarian one.  I'm curious to learn how to make vegan meals and even snacks too!

Can't wait,

Jonathan

Hi everyone

Concerning the food stuff I am happy to observe that I am not the only one to be vegetarian.
I have no restriction and I am curious to discovering new food.

See you soon

I like the idea of eating locally and doing that as much as possible on the trip really appeals to me. I have been vegan for about 8 months now. I'd like to stick with that but if it's not working I would be ok with switching to vegitarian for the trip. I don't really want to cook meat but if I'm cooking with someone else I have no problem if they do. But I would definitly like to try eating more local foods and more organic foods. Besides visiting farmer's markets I'm not really familiar with any other options for eating locally and organic so I'm excited to learn more. I also like the idea of eating waste foods but I've always been too shy to approach grocers to ask them if I can get some. I'm excited to meet everyone and do some cooking for the group!
