They are indeed crap. I have the first one, which I think was Amy
Winehouse. Why I bought it I have no idea. I think I quite liked the
sleeve. They seem to be coming and fast with no end in sight. Who the
hell is buying them?

Davie asked who next. Well this one isn't a bootleg, this is the latest compilation put out by USM to re-promote Madness's back catalogue:

www.amazon.co.uk/Forever-Young-The-Ska-Collection/dp/B006M6GIRA/

It's the first Madness release since 2005's the Dangermen Sessions about which I cannot even raise a bean of enthusiasm for. It's not that it's a bad collection of songs, more that it ignores so much of what is good about Madness. Hopefully if will give more casual ska punters a look at what Madness did away from the singles after Embarrassment-let's face it their singles weren't exactly ska or even ska influenced in a lot of cases. I suppose with so many people out there trying to make money off the word ska eventually the labels would start releasing stuff instead of licensing tracks to massive selling compilation albums such as Ska Madness etc.

The album contains two unreleased tracks Vietnam and In The Hall Of The Mountain Of The King. These were deemed not good enough  for The Dangermen Sessions. I quite like the latter.

I'm sort of hoping this goes away quite quietly as I don't think it would be fitting for Madness to reach their 500th week in the UK top 100 album chart with a release as tenuous as this.

I agree with you Paul about the Dangermen Sessions. In theory is
should have been a great album, but instead it’s flat and lifeless.
Something went very badly wrong somewhere. There is a great live
bootleg recording doing the rounds which includes most of the tracks
plus the likes of The Prince. It sounds how the album should have
sounded. It’s called The Dangermen Live at The Melkweg, Amsterdam, for
those who haven’t already sourced a copy.

Hi Jason

Agree 100%. I saw Madness as The Dangermen many times (three or four of the original Dublin Castle dates, 3 times at the Scala, once in Paris) and have seen them perform songs from the album live on many more occasions. Every time they have been brilliant. The show at The Melkweg is pretty close to the excitement of the shows I saw in a relatively small venue, with small stages so the band and audience were both cramped as you are at gigs by new and unknown bands.

Then there's the album. Plastic and horrible. Every ounce of excitement sapped from the songs. Live You Keep Me Hanging On was quite some event. On the record it is listless. Iron Shirt continues to be something of a live favourite. When I first heard it I described In The Hall Of The Mountain King as being better than anything on The Dangermen Sessions. That may have been a little hasty, but it is at least fun and a little different. I imagine that for the gigs they decided to go with Highwire ad Pigbag. This could have done the trick too.

Here's hoping their current sessions with a bunch of new producers (including Owen Morris and Stephen Street) lead to a decent new album at some stage this year.

Agreed Regarding that Madness Ska Collection a good Ska/Reggae type
Collection could have been Compiled using tracks from 1979 - 1981 only
with the last song being In The City. Victoria Gardens on a Ska
Compilation is just wrong. Madness spent years trying to tell people
that they were not a Ska band and then this happens (what went
wrong ?) maybe they should change the album title to This may not be
uptown Jamaica (but we promise you a treat) ?.

The Last 2 Studio albums Wonderful and TLONF were good but they were
basically Keep Moving remakes. but I think the new album is going to
change all of that I hope. Langer & Winstanley left because they said
they couldn't take the Madness sound any further because it was
getting boring producing the same sound over and over and I totally
agree with them. Madness need to take one step beyond and leave the
1980s sound two steps behind. I actually liked The Dangermen Sessions
because it was different if nothing else. Madness were very dear to my
heart from 1979 - 1986 or 1988 if you like but it's been very patchy
ever since. I liked Suggs solo recordings again because they were
different in sound. in my opinion The Lone Ranger was far better than
Wonderful.
