Hi,

I'm running a simulation with grid-based lakes in WRF-Hydro and have a few questions regarding UDMP in version 5.2:

Can I keep the grid-based lakes configuration and leave UDMP as default = 0? I'm not sure how the udmp_opt works. I have always worked with default = 0 configuration.

Is there any issue with using version 5.2 for this type of simulation, or should I upgrade to the latest version for better lake modeling and non-UDMP routing?

Thanks a lot

Hi Jana,

If you want to run the gridded based lakes, it means you want to use the channel option 3 which is for gridded channel routing. And if that is the case, then we need to leave UDMP as 0. So the right combination to use is the following:

! Specify channel routing option: 1=Muskingam-reach, 2=Musk.-Cunge-reach, 3=Diff.Wave-gridded,
! 5=Bypass channel routing (only active for UDMP=1 and reach configuration)
channel_option = 3

! User defined mapping, such as NHDPlus: 0=no (default), 1=yes
UDMP_OPT = 0

And to add a little to the discussion, UDMP is only for a specific reach based routing configuration, (channel_option = 2) so you cannot use it with the gridded based routing.

As for the model version, there is a new version of WRF-Hydro available (v5.4) which we recommend upgrading to. The new version does not change how the gridded routing is done and my above comment is still valid.

Let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
Arezoo

Hi Arezoo,

Thank you so much for your response! It was really helpful.
One last question regarding version 5.4. I saw through the google groups forum that it is still being tested for new WRF 4.7 and 4.7.1 versions, with not much success, right? So I guess it is meant to work with WRF 4.6.0 (I work with the uncoupled mode).

Hi Jana,

If you use the WRF-Hydro version that’s included with WRF v4.7, it should work. However, in uncoupled/offline mode then you can use the WRF-Hydro version 5.4 from the WRF-Hydro GitHub download page since it has no dependency on WRF:
