Jeff,
I wholeheartedly agree, except for your “ceiling mounted recirculating filter unit is the last step” statement. You would need 4 of them with expensive fresh inner (1 micron) and outer (5 micron) “blue” filters to move as much air as an inexpensive 24” exhaust fan. And, unlike the recirculating filter, the exhaust fan is capable of removing 100% of even the finest dust/particles, fumes, and odors.

Well, I did not hear that presentation. However my understanding of dust control techniques is the primary step is to capture the dust at its source and exhaust or filter that airflow. A ceiling mounted recirculating filter unit is a last step, to try and capture dust that escapes the primary collection methods. It is far more difficult to filter all the air in a room than it is to capture dust as it is produced.

IMO getting the dust out of home workshops is a lot more effective (safer), affordable, and less labor intensive than trying to filter and recirculate it (as was suggested yesterday by the Rockler salesman "as the 1st step!"). Wouldn't you rather have an "old school" externally exhausted range hood or fireplace than a "modern" re-circulating one? Which is more effective at getting rid of smoke, odors, and CO2? Wasn't the importance of fresh air one of the most important "lessons learned" from the Covid pandemic?
Fortunately, our climate supports doing this with simple exhaust fans and open doors/windows for the entry of fresh air (wherever is best). Either roof or wall mounted fans are capable of moving a lot more air (CFMs) than filtration devices with comparable power consumption because they don't use filters. This large one is capable of moving up to 4400 cubic feet per minute (CFM)! (The shop's 7.5HP Oneida dust collector is only capable of 2750 CFM.)
