Hello,
I hope this email finds you well.
As the subject line suggests, I have a query regarding the inbuilt line numbering feature available in NVDA under Document Formatting.
When I enable the “Line Number” checkbox, NVDA does not read line numbers in MS Office 2021 or during web navigation. However, it does read line numbers in the NVDA Add-ons Store description.
I would like to understand how this feature works, particularly why it behaves differently across applications. Also, I noticed that this option is turned on by default.
I would appreciate a detailed explanation regarding this.
Thank you.

I'm not sure why it isn't working.  It definitely used to work, and I expect it is a change in Word, since I went back to NVDA 2024.4.2 and the same thing happened (I didn't try earlier versions).

I did find a workaround - In NVDA's advanced settings, if you set NVDA to "Use UI Automation in Microsoft Word Controls" to "Only when necessary" the line numbers read (that will likely change other aspects of Word however, so it will be a matter of picking which setting causes the least disruption for you).

Kind regards

Quentin

hello, It works in MS Word, but how does it function in other applications such as web navigation and Notepad? hope you will guide me on it.

For at least one year, NVDA was the second choice on my Task Bar so that by pressing Windows Key + 2, I could start NVDA. Not only did that cease working after the update, but NVDA disappeared from the Task Bar.
Of course, there are alternatives, and this is no big deal, but it was surprising.
On a separate note, Joseph, control + Alt + B now announces the state of the microphone in Voice Assist. Thank you for this!!!

I haven't checked in Windows11 but on my Windows 10 machine, NVDA
2025.3.3 isn't in the task bar. That is what is expected because it
isn't in the alt tab order and my understanding is that if a program
isn't in the alt tab order, it doesn't appear in the task bar unless you
pin it there. I suspect you did so and forgot at some point, maybe a
long time ago.

Again, in my Windows 10 machine, if I am on the NVDA short cut on the
desktop and I open the context menu, one of the items in the menu is pin
to task bar.

Ah in that case I'm not sure.  I can see it's not working in Notepad here for me as well.

As Gene hinted, you may need to pin NVDA to your taskbar again.  To do this:
1. Press the windows key to open the start menu
2. Type NVDA but do NOT press enter
3. Press the applications key to open the context menu
4. Down arrow to "pin to taskbar" and press enter

Next to set it where you want it on the taskbar:
1. Press WINDOWS+T to jump to the taskbar.
2. Press the left or right arrows to find the NVDA icon on the taskbar
3. Press shift+alt+left arrow to move it left one place or shift+alt+right arrow to move it right one place.  Note that this isn't articulated, but should be noticed if you use the left and right arrows to move around again.

This allows you to use WINDOWS+2 to start the program (since you wanted it in position 2), though otherwise, it works much like using control+alt+n or any other method to start the program.

Kind regards

Quentin

Actually movement is articulated now. you wil hear between x and y, where x and y are the icons on the task bar. They fixed this maybe 1-2 years ago.

Thank you Sarah!

Clearly I don't move items very often myself.  I was working from memory :)

I just checked and the position change is announced.  It is a Microsoft feature, not an NVDA feature.  The same speech occurs when moving this way with JAWS.  It is very over verbose.  We are told something like, x moved between y and z.  Not just something like moved. We are not given useful information, such as the number of an item on the task bar.  One of the main points for an item having a certain position on the task bar is so that we may assign the number we want to use to run or open the item.  That information isn't given so we might hear, NVDA, moved between Outlook and Edge.  So we have to go to the beginning of the items and move, counting until we get to the item.  Doesn't the accessibility team vet what they do with blind users to see if they are providing useful information or not?

Hi Gene,

I can't comment on how they arrived at the way it works now, but it's always worth sharing feedback like this with the Microsoft Disability Team either directly: https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/Accessibility/disability-answer-desk or via the feedback hub.

Kind regards

It does work in Notepad ++ (two plus signs) though.

I’m OK with the way it works now. In addition to their place on the task bar, I also group my icons by function, so I wouldn’t want to lose what applications they’re in between. Once I have the applications in the order I want, it isn’t a big deal for me to determine where they are on the task bar.
