I was so far behind that I quickly just listened to subject lines and missed the one about voice toggle commands. I went back and still cannot find a subject discussing that. could someone please post that one again? Are you speaking of the two voices that automatically seem to come with NVDA or is it another voice program. I thought there used to be more than two voice options but that is all I find now.

when I do change them while the laptop is on it seems to go back to the one I had originally if the laptop is shut down. I also notice with the male voice that some of the letters are not pronounced corrected for the English language.

Betsy,

If you’re referring to NVDA’s native voice-changing commands, this is technically called the “Synth ring” because we move through it in a circle, much like a ring. For your convenience, I’ve copy-pasted the Synth ring table exactly as it appears in the “NVDA 2025.3.3 Commands Quick Reference.”

Name

Desktop key

Laptop key

Description

Move to next synth setting.

NVDA+control+rightArrow

NVDA+shift+control+rightArrow

Moves to the next available speech setting after the current one, wrapping around to the first setting again after the last one.

Move to previous synth setting.

NVDA+control+leftArrow

NVDA+shift+control+leftArrow

Moves to the next available speech setting before the current, wrapping around to the last setting after the first.

Increment current synth setting.

NVDA+control+upArrow

NVDA+shift+control+upArrow

increases the current speech setting you are on. E.g. increases the rate, chooses the next voice, increases the volume.

Increment the current synth setting in a larger step.

NVDA+control+pageUp

NVDA+shift+control+pageUp

Increases the value of the current speech setting you're on in larger steps. e.g. when you're on a voice setting, it will jump forward every 20 voices; when you're on slider settings (rate, pitch, etc) it will jump forward the value up to 20%.

Decrement current synth setting.

NVDA+control+downArrow

NVDA+shift+control+downArrow

decreases the current speech setting you are on. E.g. decreases the rate, chooses the previous voice, decreases the volume.

Decrement the current synth setting in a larger step.

NVDA+control+pageDown

NVDA+shift+control+pageDown

Decreases the value of the current speech setting you're on in larger steps. e.g. when you're on a voice setting, it will jump backward every 20 voices; When you're on a slider setting, it will jump backward the value up to 20%.

Which voices you find in NVDA’s “Select Synthesizer” dialog depends on whether the appropriate add-ons and voice packs (if required) are installed. It comes with eSpeak-NG by default. Additionally, Windows OneCore voices and Microsoft Speech API version 5 may also be visible depending on your version of Windows. Why don’t you check the recent In-Process build here:
https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-10th-april-2026/
? Hopefully, this will clear up your confusion regarding the availability of default voices.

Have you checked “Save configuration when exiting” in NVDA’s “General” category? If not, please check that so that your configuration remains the same when NVDA restarts.

If you have any problems or difficulty understanding anything, or if I’m lefting out something more, feel free to reply.

HTH

Snehashish.

I doubt the voice ring is what is being asked about. The voice ring
only allows you to select voices from the voices for the synthesizer
currently selected. You can't change synthesizers.

There are two dialogs for working with voices. I won't go into how to
use just one dialog to change voices in this message.

NVDA control s opens the select synthesizer dialog. Once opened, up
and down arrow to find the synthesizer you want. There are many, far
more than two.

After you select the synthesizer you want to use, press enter. Now open
the voice selection dialog, NVDA control v.
Tab perhaps twice until you get to a field in the dialog that says voice
combo box. Up and down arrow to the voice you want to use, then tab
through settings like rate, pitch, etc. changing what you want.
Activate the OK button or press enter after you have looked at and
changed any settings. Remember, where you are working now has nothing
to do with selecting the synthesizer. It has to do with selecting a
voice offered by the synthesizer and setting parameters for the voice
such as pitch and rate.

If you select a different voice, the settings will still apply. You
aren't changing synthesizers, you are changing voices within the
offerings of the synthesizer.
