I was so far behind that I quickly just listened to subject lines and missed the one about voice toggle commands. I went back and still cannot find a subject discussing that. could someone please post that one again? Are you speaking of the two voices that automatically seem to come with NVDA or is it another voice program. I thought there used to be more than two voice options but that is all I find now.
when I do change them while the laptop is on it seems to go back to the one I had originally if the laptop is shut down. I also notice with the male voice that some of the letters are not pronounced corrected for the English language.
Betsy,
If you’re referring to NVDA’s native voice-changing commands, this is technically called the “Synth ring” because we move through it in a circle, much like a ring. For your convenience, I’ve copy-pasted the Synth ring table exactly as it appears in the “NVDA 2025.3.3 Commands Quick Reference.”
Which voices you find in NVDA’s “Select Synthesizer” dialog depends on whether the appropriate add-ons and voice packs (if required) are installed. It comes with eSpeak-NG by default. Additionally, Windows OneCore voices and Microsoft Speech API version 5 may also be visible depending on your version of Windows. Why don’t you check the recent In-Process build here:
https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-10th-april-2026/
? Hopefully, this will clear up your confusion regarding the availability of default voices.
Have you checked “Save configuration when exiting” in NVDA’s “General” category? If not, please check that so that your configuration remains the same when NVDA restarts.
If you have any problems or difficulty understanding anything, or if I’m lefting out something more, feel free to reply.
HTH
Snehashish.
