I have been noticing this problem for a few weeks now when I write documents but today it is affecting reading them as well. Let me try to explain. Again this happens when I am trying to go through something I have written or something i have received.

As far as I know, I have the latest version of Word and I know the latest version of NVDA.

If I arrow down line by line it jumps all over the place in the document. The articles will be out of order and if it is just minutes it will not read all that is on the line but skip it. If I read all at once by using the command to just read it everything is great. I cannot proof things this way.

If I am not making myself clear please let me know what you do not understand. I hope we can figure out how to resolve this as it is definitely making my life really difficult because I am secretary for several groups and am one of the proofreaders for a magazine.

I don't know what the problem is but there are alternatives that may be
good work arounds for now. One is to use Narrator. Do you know how to
run it? Another is to use NVDA but instead of down arrowing, use the
review commands. Numpad 7 is read previous line. Numpad 8 is read
current line and numpad 9 is read next line. That may allow you to read
line by line without the problem you are having when you use the arrow keys.

Also, is your document in drafts mode? this set of symptoms sounds like
it might not be.

To find the version info for any Microsoft product, you can press Alt, F, D, A to view the product’s “About” section. Additionally, I personally use the NVDA Global Plug-in and recommend it to anyone interested.

I wouldn’t call myself a “power user” of Microsoft Word, but for proofreading, I generally prefer reading in “Focus Mode.”

HTH,

Snehashish.

I don't see why any mode would cause the symptom described,, of
characters being misplaced when down arrowing and not when using read to
end.  I have played around with Word but I don't use it so there may be
something I don't know about a certain mode, but I've never seen or
heard of this problem related to any mode.

That isn't the case. In Word, the information is in accounts and you
can get directly to it with alt f, d, a. Alt f just opens account and a
opens about, which is in account. There may be this or that product
where what you say is correct, but it isn't a general rule. It doesn't
work in NNotepad, either the new or the old one, nor in the Outlook app,
I mean the new Outlook, and It doesn't work in the legacy Windows Media
player either.

Hmmm, may be.

Anyway, in my daily life (as mentioned before), I use the Global Plug-in.

If the Word document is "read only" NVDA reacts like that. There is an
option to make it editable but I can't remember how to activate it. When
I receive a "read only" document I select all and copy it to a new Word
document. When format is not important I copy it to Wordpad and edit
from there.

If the problem is truly that the document Is “read only,” Then use the key combination alt + F, I, E. N
  . N
I remember the key combination because of the Jack And The Beanstalk Fairy Tale and the expression “Fee, Fie, Fo, Fum.”
Just forget that the spelling probably should be with a "ph."

If it is protected, then press F6, then tab to Enable Editing and press enter.
