Hello NVDA Users,

I belong to an online group where it has been suggested I delete auto-filled passwords from my browser, which is Google Chrome.
This is not the same as clearing, history, cookies, or cache.
How does one find 'settings' in their browser, and go about deleting auto-filled passwords?
I realize this is not a direct NVDA question.

Regards,

David Russell

I don’t think you can. Chrome auto completes from your saved passwords on the fly, so does Edge as far as I know.

All the best

sorry was on my phone when I got your mail. If you are dead sure that you want to do this, please follow the instructions below which I have generated using Gemini
Note: This cannot be undone
I have combined the steps for deleting all saved passwords, disabling the saving prompt, and turning off other auto-fill options into one comprehensive guide, focusing entirely on keyboard navigation in Google Chrome for a Windows operating system.
⌨️Part 1: Deleting ALL Saved Passwords (Recommended)
The quickest way to delete all saved passwords at once is by using the "Clear Browsing Data" dialog, which bypasses the need to delete each one individually.
 * Open the Clear Browsing Data Dialog:
   * Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete (or ⌘ + Shift + Delete on Mac).
 * Select Time Range:
   * The focus is usually on the "Time range" dropdown. If it is not, press Shift + Tab until the dropdown is selected.
   * Press the Down Arrow key repeatedly until you hear or see "All time" selected.
 * Select Passwords Option:
   * Press Tab to move to the list of checkboxes.
   * Use the Down Arrow key to move to the checkbox labeled "Passwords and other sign-in data."
   * Press the Spacebar to ensure this box is checked. (You may need to uncheck irrelevant boxes like "History" or "Cookies" with the Spacebar if you don't want to clear them).
 * Confirm Deletion:
   * Press Tab until the focus lands on the "Clear data" button.
   * Press Enter to delete all saved passwords.
Part 2: Disabling Future Password Saving and Auto-Sign-In
This stops Chrome from prompting you to save new passwords and from automatically logging you in.
 * Go to Chrome Settings:
   * Press Alt + F (or Alt + E). This opens the main Chrome menu (the three vertical dots).
   * Press the letter S to open Settings.
   * (Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + L to jump to the address bar, type chrome://settings/passwords, and press Enter).
 * Navigate to Password Manager:
   * If you are on the main settings page, press Tab until you reach the "Autofill and passwords" section in the left-hand navigation.
   * Press Enter to open the section.
   * The first item in the list will be "Google Password Manager" (or similar). Press Enter to select it.
 * Disable Password Saving Prompt:
   * Press Tab repeatedly until you reach the toggle switch labeled "Offer to save passwords and passkeys."
   * Press the Spacebar to toggle this switch OFF.
 * Disable Auto-Sign-In:
   * Press Tab again to move to the next toggle switch, likely labeled "Sign in automatically" (or "Auto Sign-in").
   * Press the Spacebar to toggle this switch OFF.
Part 3: Disabling Other Autofill Options (Addresses and Payments)
This stops Chrome from saving or filling in your personal addresses and credit card information.
 * Return to Autofill Settings:
   * In the address bar, press Ctrl + L (or F6) to jump to the address bar.
   * Type chrome://settings/autofill and press Enter.
 * Disable Payment Methods Autofill:
   * Press Tab until you select "Payment methods" and press Enter.
   * Press Tab until you reach the toggle switch labeled "Save and fill payment methods."
   * Press the Spacebar to toggle this switch OFF.
 * Disable Address Autofill:
   * Press Alt + Left Arrow to go back one page to the Autofill section.
   * Press Tab until you select "Addresses and more" and press Enter.
   * Press Tab until you reach the toggle switch labeled "Save and fill addresses."
   * Press the Spacebar to toggle this switch OFF.
You have now successfully cleared all saved passwords and disabled all the primary autofill and saving features in Chrome using only your keyboard!

Sincerely,

I find it very hard to believe this isn't user controllable. Some
people really object to passwords being saved in browsers as a security
risk.

Hello NVDA Users,

First, thanks to Mitch .... for posting these detailed steps around the topic of initiating auto-filled passwords. I did the steps from A.I. and deleted five passwords but was told no more existed in my auto-fill.
I subscribe to a pay service like Google Pay and want to retain that password since the one in question tries to get one to sign-up for a pass key. I don't want the damn thing.

The group I belong too suggesting I delete auto-filled passwords did encourage this because if members ever need to reset their password, auto-fill somehow prevents them from being able to generate a new password. Whether that's true or not, don't know.

All the best,
David

No, auto complete doesn’t prevent you from creating a new one. You just delete everything in the box then re-type the new password.

Then the browser will ask if you want to update it.

All the best
