Hi Robert,

Note that to use single letter shortcut keys in Gmail, you'll want to disable NVDA's own single letter shortcut keys (like H to jump to heading etc).  To do that, press NVDA+shift+spacebar.

Kind regards

Quentin

Looks like Google wants to really exercise our fingers and brains, with so many keyboard combinations it's like you are going to end up writing code. You have to constantly switch between Browse and Focus mode to be able to get to where you want to and on the page shared; I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - also a song by the band U2

My honest opinion, configure your Gmail to a desktop client like Thunderbird OR Outlook and save your self the trouble. Coincidentally I had to struggle with Gmail on the web just yesterday, as I had to get some verification code to help set up my daughters account, which is a child account and it cannot be configured to Forward mail to another ID or be configured with Outlook.

Sincerely,

Why are blind people still reading email content online in browsers, this is really complex. Just use an email client like outlook or thunderbird.

Let me smile at that response which I already shared earlier with the mailing list. Checking mail should not be like rocket science, by the way rocket science is now made even easier with AI technology you just prompt the AI Chat bot and bang, the place is blown down to dirt.

I don't mind the keys actually  I use the web version of gmail at work and it's actually wonderful. Take time to learn the keystrokes. they will go into muscle memory soon enough. I use the GSuite daily  whether for docs or sheets at work, and I just love it.

Thank you for your reply and sharing your experience, can you tell me how to go to the Trash folder on Gmail web? I need to clean out things from the following folders i.e. Sent, Trash and SPAM/ Junk

I was struggling for this for almost an hour, checked their help pages but could not find the answer on being able to easily navigate to these folders on Gmail web. When replying could you be specific if the key strokes you use are in Browse OR Focus mode? Thank you once again, have a good one!

Hello,
To get to the trash folder in Gmail, first you need to find the More labels button by pressing the B key while in NVDA browse mode. Then, press the K key to navigate until you find the Trash folder and press Enter. After that, you will automatically be in the trash folder.

There is no short cut key to move to the Trash folder. But, as I say,
off and on, the find command is one of the most powerful and one of the
most undertaught and underused commands for blind Internet users. All
you need do, is start at the top of the page, search for trash, and you
are immediately on the link to move to the trash folder. You can move
to other folders in the same way, if you don't want to memorize short
cut after short cut. I haven't tested to see if you are moved to all
folder links on the first search but if you repeat the search if
necessary, you will get to the folder link.

If you want to empty Trash, of course you may, but any message that is
thirty days old is automatically removed so I never empty the trash
folder. It keeps itself from filling too much.

Another illustration of the usefulness of the find command is moving to
something you think may be on a page or know is there, but don't know
where. Even if you know where, the find command may be such a
convenient way to get to it you may want to use it to get to it. If you
open the trash folder, then start at the top of the page and search for
the word empty, you will be placed on an empty trash now button the
first time you search. You may want to experiment and see how many
times you need to press b from the top of the page to get to that
button, but the find command works so well, you may just want to use it.

You may find good uses for the find command on other pages as well.

Dear Gene,

Thanks for reminding me about using the find command to navigate to specific folders in Gmail. I appreciate your tip on using Control + F to search for the word "trash" or other folder names, and I'll definitely make use of it. Your hack is excellent, and I'm glad I got a refresher on this useful shortcut.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge.

I just checked out of curiosity and you have to type b something like
fifteen or sixteen times to finally get to the empty trash now button.

simply go into your elements list,  go to the trash label, hit enter then hit star plus a that is shift 8, then a, and then number or shift 3. I would read the keyboard guide and memorize the ones you need.
