I am not sure how I did it but would like to fix it. I somehow have three desktops. I am sure I did something to make them but would like to know with NVDA how to fix it and what I need to not do to allow this to happen in the future. I guess since I am using NVDA it is sort of an NVDA question after all.

Thanks.

To open a new desktop, the command is Windows key control d.  You are likely intending to go to the desktop and instead of Windows d, you are executing Windows control d.  I don't like that command and I use Windows key m to go to the desktop, a similar but not identical command but you may notice no difference in effect, depending on how you use it.

To close an opened desktop, be on it and use the command, Windows key control f4.

I have never appreciated the benefit of multiple desktops - just call me a simpleton.  But here is a comprehensive list of commands for dealing with multiple desktops:
• To create a new desktop, press Windows+control+d
• To move to the next desktop, press Windows+control+right arrow
• To move to the previous desktop, press Windows+control+left arrow
• To delete the current desktop, press Windows+control+F4. When deleting a desktop, any open Windows on that desktop are moved to the previous desktop.
To move a window between desktops:
1. Press Windows+tab to open the task view window
2. (The current window is selected, otherwise use arrows to select another window)
3. Press the applications key to open the context menu
4. Press down arrow twice to “Move to”
5. Press enter or right arrow to open the list of options
6. Select a desktop from the list
7. Press enter
You can also rename desktops:
1. Press Windows+tab to open the task view list
2. Press tab to move to the list of desktops
3. The current desktop is selected. Press the arrow keys to select any other desktop
4. Press the applications key to open the context menu
5. Press enter to select “Rename” (As it is the first option)
6. Type the new name
7. Press enter

Same here. I’m so use to one desktop. Trying to figure out how multiple could fit in my workflow.
Thanks so much for these shortcuts.

Hello:
This is an interesting thread to work with NVDA.
I advice to use meaningful subjects so that messages can be searched and read better.
Happy new year to all,

As far as multiple desk tops are concerned, I only played with them a
little, but you can cause different things to be on different desktops.
I don't recall how. you do that, But you might have a desktop with
things on it related to work such as short cuts to documents and
work-related programs and another desktop with things on it related to
something else.

I have no need of such organization but some people may want it.

No, I do not want multiple desktops. I have no idea what I am doing wrong to get them.

I suspect you use Windows key d to move to the desktop. Since the
command to create a new desktop is control Windows key d, I suspect you
are inadvertently pressing control along with the Windows key at times.

To remove desktops, do the following:
Go to the desktop. Use the command control Windows key f4 and it will
remove the one you are on. Continue executing the command to remove all
the extra ones. You don't have to worry. You can't remove the real one
if you issue the command when you are on it. The command only removes
the extra ones and does nothing if you are on the original desktop.

Also, there is another command to move to the desktop, Windows key m.
It is similar in what it does to Windows key d. You may want to try it.
But again, be careful just to press the Windows key.

Hi,

Multiple desktops can be a hufe help when you use the computer for multiple things at once. A friend of mine has his setup configured so that all his audio apps are on one, his coding/ dev envirinment apps are on another, and any chat apps are on a 3rd, such as teamtalk or a mastodon client. This way he can keep things relatively straight forward and organize without having to alt tab through possibley over 10 windows in some cases.

Hi Betsy,

Presumably, you have Desktop 1, 2 and 3 right? Go to each desktop and press Control F4 to close it.

All the best

Steve
