Question about using thunderbird with nvda

Hi,

I just downloaded thunderbird, as I have been meaning to get a mail client on windows for a while now and have a few beginner questions. When it comes to using it with nvda in general, is there any add-ons, settings changes, etc i should use for thunderbird to make it as ideal as possible? I'd also like to know if there's a way to make it read message states, such as unread, starred, etc before the email address and subject like other things do, so I can quickly find out if a message is read or not while moving through.

I can't say whether you should use any add-ons or not because I don't
know if they will matter in terms of how you use the program. There is
at least one add-on, I don't know if there are others. Do you know how
to find add-ons in the add-on store? If not, we may discuss that and

I did a search on the web page for Thunderbird and I found the add-on I
know about but I also saw many listings, most of which appear to have
nothing to do with Thunderbird specifically. I didn't follow the links
and read the descriptions of them.

As far as using the program, when you run it, move to the folders tree
view with f6. You can press it three times to get to it and once more
gets you to the message list. While you can make a change in the
program, I'd have to see if I can figure it out again, you can change
the layout so you can tab twice to get from the folders tree view to the
message list and shift tab twice to get back to the folders tree view.
But for now, use f6 and shift f6. You can get to the message list in
one command after you open the program with shift f6.

As far as read, there is an item you can have set to on but it will tell
you both read and unread for every message. I really don't want that
excessive verbosity so mine is off. I don't recall what the default is.

To see if yours is off, somewhere between the folders tree view and the
message list is a button that says toggle message threads. I don't know
how many tabs or shift tabs it is. Once on the button, left arrow once
to an item that says something like, select columns to display. Press
the space bar.
Move up and down and look for read and unread or wording that tells you
that you are on the right item. I don't recall exactly the wording. If
it isn't checked, press enter. Then, as I recall, press escape to
return to where you were originally.

Also, if you don't see some things I discuss, it may be because you are
using the default card view, I think it's called for messages. If that
keeps you from seeing anything I've discussed, let us know and I or
someone will tell you how to change the message list view.

To the OP: I hope you don’t mind me asking another question as a fellow Thunderbird beginner. If you do, please let me know and I can start a new thread.

I am using Thunderbird version 146.0. I press Ctrl+k, type in a search string, and press Enter. After doing so, I am not sure how to get to the list of search results. I’ve tried pressing F6 and Tab a bunch without success. The first Tab after the search field takes me to “chrome://messenger/content/glodaFacetView.xhtml grouping.” How do I get to the results list?

Don't press enter. Type the search, then tab perhaps six times until
you get to the list of messages.

Unfortunately, that takes me to the message list for the folder that I'm already in, unchanged. It doesn't look like pressing Ctrl+k and typing in something performs the search.

I don't know why you are having a problem. I've been using this method
for two or three years. Control k, then type something you are looking
for such as someone's name, as appears in messages you get or for one or
more words in the subject line, tab many times to the list, and it
should work, unless your program isn't working properly. Close
filtering with escape.

For example, since NVDA is in the subject line of all messages from this
list, searching a folder with messages from this list should show those
messages. Actually, in this interface, it is called filtering.

It isn't control k. It's control shift k to use what I am describing.
I don't know if I said control k in the past, I mistakenly did in my
previous message.

No, I didn't say control shift k or control k before. I should have
specified using control shift k but I didn't realize you are using
control k. I can't discuss how to work with control k because I don't
use it.

Also, I've just tried control k search in the current version of
Thunderbird with the current version of NVDA, 2025.3.2.

It appears to me to be inaccesswible. I can tab to an item that says
table, but it never shows any information accessible to NVDA.

I don't know if control shift f can search more than one folder at a
time, as far as I know, control shift k only searches the folder you are
in.

A correction:
The control k search feature is accessible if you want to go through the
inconvenience of using it.

I thought it wasn't because tabbing a number of times after instituting
a search took me to something referred to as table. That's where I
expected the results. But to actually get to the results, you need to
tab perhaps fifteen times from the search edit field and you will
finally see the first results, if any. If there are multiple findings,
you must tab from result to result, the usual arrowing won't move you.

In short, issue control k. Type a search and press enter. Then tab and
tab and see if there are results.

And now, after going to the trouble to figure out how to see a results,
it turns out that you evidently can't work with them. Messages are
shown as links but pressing enter on a message appears to do nothing.
You can't move the mouse to the location using the NVDA move mouse
command nor can you use NVDA and numpad enter because it isn't aligned
with the link.

Others may wish to play with this feature but don't be disappointed if
it can't be made to work.

Hi Gene,

Thank you for continuing to look into the Ctrl+K search accessibility. I'm a bit confused by your latest comment: if you can only get to the results after fifteen tabs, and then pressing Enter on the message links appears to do nothing, how can you say the search results are accessible? Is there something I'm missing here?

You are discussing two different messages I sent. In the one that said
the feature is accessible, I hadn't tried to open a message. Later, I
decided to try it so as not to assume it could be done. When I tried it
and couldn't do so, I sent another message saying this can't be done.
So the control k search is not accessible.

Given Ctrl+k isn’t working, I’m curious if you have an alternate, efficient method for searching emails in Thunderbird? If you use Ctrl+Shift+k or Ctrl+Shift+f, are you able to search across all cemail components (subject, message, sender name, etc.) efficiently? I am just looking for something comparable to typing in the Search mail edit box on Gmail web.

Control k is a universal search. I don't think control shift k searches
anything but the folder you are in. I haven't looked at control shift f
enough to discuss it and what you can search with it, but it is accessible.

All I can say is try with control k to search for what you want and see
if it finds it. It searches subject lines and I believe the to line but
I don't know if it searches anything else.

Ctrl+shift+F lets you search across something like 17 different fields/combinations, and you can apply multiple search filters if you want to, and while ot cleanest interface, it's definitely usable - simple example:

Located in inbox message listing

ctrl+shift+F

tab over to drop-down to select filter element, and arrow down to subject field contains

tab over to next drop-down which lets you select if you want field to contain, or work with whole field match

tab over to value entry field and enter in short string

if you just want to use a single search value, hit alt+S now

alternatively, tab to button to add search criteria and then shift+tab back through other fields to apply multiple criteria - can repeat this process

once done, if you used multiple search criteria, when on last one, hit alt+S

wait a little while - it tells me when it has returned results, and how many

shift+tab 4 times and you should land on list of messages, hitting enter will open the message up - I have thunderbird set to open messages in new windows anyway - and hitting escape will land back in search results list

hitting escape from search results will close it, and should then revert back to normal message list

There are also a lot of other things in that search interface, like checkboxes to specify if it should search locally or on server, should search sub-folders, etc., etc. - play around with it, but it works, even if there are no shortcut keys to set focus to specific aspects.

Have been working like this for quite a while now, and am currently running thunderbird 146, with thunderbird+ g5 add-on under NVDA 2025.3.2.

Had also myself never even heard of or paid attention to the filter search via ctrl+K, or ctrl+shift+K, but anyway.

the keystroke is actually control shift K. this will bring up the filter
bar. then you tab or hit f6 to access the list after you check unread or
what ever you want for criteria.
