saving my voice and synthesizer choice

I am missing a step. After I choose the synthesizer and the voice it is not saving. when I restart or turn off the laptop it goes back to what the default used to be.

Once I do the control plus 

NVDA plus V and choose the voice I must be missing a step after that.

To permanently save the settings, issue the command NVDA control c when
things are as you wish. You will hear configuration saved spoken.

At some point, you evidently turned off automatic saving of settings
when NVDA shuts down so that is the manual command.

You can turn on the automatic saving command but the advantage of having
it off is that you won't accidentally save settings you are trying but
haven't decided to make permanent.
