Hi,

When you press NVDA+End to read the status bar in any app, is it really necessary for NVDA to say the words “Status Bar” before it reads it?

JAWS doesn’t say it. Is there any way of suppressing those words in NVDA?

Thanks.

All the best

Hi,

“Status bar” is not announced in all applications – I do hear it in Outlook and Word but not in File Explorer’s folder view. For ones where NVDA does say “status bar”, this is the label of the status bar that NVDA is announcing.

Cheers,

Joseph

You could use the speech dictionary, but then you wouldn't hear it
elsewhere as well.

Hi Joseph,

So presumably JAWS suppresses it, since it doesn’t say the words Status Bar in Outlook or Word. It’s just a pain to have to hear that every time I press the status bar. But something in NVDA must be labelling it as such.

All the best

My outlook status bar announcements are practically useless anyway:

>” Status Bar Connectivity to your server. Connected Normal View. Show All Pinned Panes. Reading View. Hide All Pinned Panes. Zoom Out 100 Zoom 100 Zoom In 100 Zoom 100% Size box”

In word especially I find it easier to hit f6 and cursor left/right to the bit I need. Repeated f6ing puts me back on that spot.

But in Emails, it does tell you how many are in the inbox, etc. So I find that quite useful.

JAWS tidies all this up nicely, but NVDA doesn’t.

Unfortunately though, NVDA is not great with Outlook anyway, for example, it doesn’t utilise the virtual buffer as well as JAWS. If you go into any Email, you get the to and from info repeated again, and if a text message, you only get the first line read, whereas with an HTML message, it reads the whole thing.

JAWS on the other hand, will simply read the text of the message as soon as you hit enter.

But all that is another story, the status line thing is jut another reason I don’t like NVdA with Outlook. It’s a shame though, because it’s things like this that stop me recommending NVDA to power users.

All the best

What are you saying here? Perhaps you are not aware of the features of NVDA that enable the reading of the mails when opened.

Whether it matters Yes, it may cause this or that inconvenience if you
are moving by review or object navigation and you don't hear it, but
that de[pends on what programs you use. You can always remove the entry
when using a program where you want to hear it, but if the user finds it
much more pleasant not to hear it in general, what is wrong with that?

Just saying not a good idea with no explanation is a meaningless comment.

On thinking about it further, all the user need do is open the speech
dictionary and it won't function while opened so nothing need be changed.

Hi,

Nope – it is presented by Outlook and its UI Automation implementation (when I use Narrator and press F6 from Outlook classic’s mail list, I do hear “status bar” pane). I would assume JAWS does the same when you press F6 from the mail list in outlook to navigate to the status bar – JAWS can suppress “status bar” announcement because it reads the bottommost content in apps when you press JAWS key+Numpad page down.

What features are you talking about specifically?

I see no way of improving the way it reads Emails in terms of efficiency.

NVDA and emails in Outlook is a very poor experience compared to JAWS. The sheer number of blank lines in HTML are a significant problem, too.

Given NVAccess sell training on Office, I’m surprised it’s not had more attention.

As to your objections of only reading the first line if it is text, NVDA
never reads text documents using read to end when opened.

I doubt you are even in the Virtual PC cursor, but you'd have to check
that But in general, the Virtual PC cursor runs when you are both in an
HTML document and the program you are using has been designed to support
using the Virtual PC Cursor or browse mode, different names fore the
same thing.

As to repeating this or that line twice, when you open a message, get in
the habit of issuing read to end after you open every message. It will
soon become second nature. If you don't like using the default read to
end, ste NVDA to use caps lock along with whatever else it offers as an
NVDA key. It is very comfortable to use capslock down arrow for read to
end.

Using Thunderbird with NVDA and just opening a message causes a good
deal of repetition before the message body is read. I issue read to end
after I open every message, avoid the problem and it is so second
nature, that I do it automatically and don't think about it in general.
While I don't use Outlook, issuing read to end should solve the
problem. It has in other e-mil programs I've used in the past.

You may have to wait a moment before doing so, you may have to experiment.

Hi,
To clarify: Outlook (classic) uses Word document controls internally, meaning NVDA will treat messages as a word document (that's how NVDA itself understands it). Therefore, you must issue a say all because you are effectively reading a Word document when you open messages in Outlook. What's making this quite complicated is that NVDA can access message content (again Word document control) in two ways: UI Automation (newer Word 365 releases) or Word object model (older Word releases), and the trend is moving to UI Automation implementation (way beyond the scope of this thread as what I wrote can bring up developer centric content).
Cheers,
Joseph

That is so inefficient compared to just hitting enter with JAWS and getting the text of the Email completely read to you, without any extra verbiage.
If you read a hundred Emails a day, you don't want to be issuing extra keystrokes. Like I say, NVDA is very poor with Outlook Emails.
All the best

Hi Joseph,
But the difference is, that JAWS has an Auto Read feature, which switches on the virtual cursor and automatically issues a Say All.
You can switch it off and get the same experience as NVDA, but why would you?

Firstly, thank you for your reply. Sorry for the delayed response. You can achieve what you want in 2 ways:

  1. Configuration profile: For Outlook go to the Browse category under Preferences/ Settings and check the box that says “Say all” but this will make the application too verbose for one to handle.
  2. 2. When you open the mail and want NVDA to read the mail for you, use the “Say all” command to read the mail i.e. NVDA modifier key + a should work depending on the keyboard layout you have selected.

I am with option 2 and that works best for me. Hope this helps, have a good one!

P.S. Using the F6 key will toggle i.e. move your Focus on Outlook through the panes for the application including the status bar of Outlook. Message List Pane, Status Bar Pane, Ribbon Pane and Folder List pane. SHIFT + F6 will move Focus in the reverse order.

Sincerely,

No, Say All on its own won’t do. NVDA needcs to automatically put the Email in the virtual buffer, as JAWS does.

Or, in other words,

Enter on the Email, press NVDA and Space to turn on virtual mode, then perform a Say All.

I don’t believe you can currently do that in configuration profiles.

No, it isn't. You are assuming without trying it. I've done this for
years and I'm not worried about a half or a quarter of a second
difference. One hundred messages, taking half a second longer to cause
them to read amounts to fifty seconds or less than one minute.

And you don't know it actually takes longer. NVDA is faster in
responding to commands or starting to speak in a lot of cases. If you
look around, you will see this stated repeatedly by different users. It
may be half a second faster so the time would balance out. Unless you
have tried this for perhaps two or three days, you are assuming and
speaking based on assumptions.

Again, if you haven't tried this for enough time to evaluate it, you
simply don't know. Rejecting something because it takes a bit of
getting used to is common. That doesn't make it correct.

Oh but I do read hundreds of email a day.it takes approx 0.5 seconds to
do what is suggested. Id' say withe get used to this or get left behind.
I don't mind the way it is.

I wouldn't mind the way it is, if I didn't know there were better solutions. I'm just trying to get NVDA improved for everyone. Considering they have training for Office products, the Office support is pretty lacking in some areas.
All the best

No way is it faster, in Outlook specifically, it is much slower, I can tell you.

It's hilarious how defensive you are about this. 😊

that is your individual experience. I haven't seen another complaint
about this and why responsiveness may be slower in your case is
something I won't speculate on, but you can't properly assume that your
experience is general in such cases.

Greetings,

I am not sure why the subject line of the mails coming to me are showing ***SPAM***

With respect to managing mails, I manage 3 mailboxes 2 at home and one at work. I don't feel the slowdown mentioned with NVDA and Outlook and at home, I am using Outlook 2019; not for long as I will be upgrading to Windows 11 and might also invest in the Microsoft 365 suite; which I have at work. 365 is a very heavy application compared to Outlook Classic or the one I am using. Having said that sometimes the application freezes, sometimes it is slow when trying to read the mails and scrolling the list of mails. This all really depends on your hardware too. Even with 16GB RAM and an intel 3 processor these kind of experiences happen. I am going to suggest some tips that might help improve the situation but honestly, even the sighted person has to first open the mail to read it. I think we are also doing the same thing but instead of reading it with our eyes we are listening to them. I can't think of any faster way of doing this.

Tips that may help solve the slowness issue:
1. Check for Outlook updates. ALT + F + D SHIFT TAB to Outlook update or something like that. Hit enter to start the update. This will take really long depending on the speed of your internet.
2. Close all running programs Open the Start menu, type Disk Cleanup, and hit enter, choose drive C: TAB till you get to OK and on the system prompts keep saying OK till the Disk Cleanup starts to clean your disk. Restart recommended after this step.
3. With all programs closed after the restart, open run dialogue box and type %temp%, CNTRL A to select all files in this folder and hit SHIFT delete. Some files are in use and will not be deleted, choose the skip option on the prompt. Restart.

HTH, have a good one!

I also did this in outlook and read hundreds of emails a day and really
it only took about 250 ms or so. so again it didn't take much time and I
didn't lose much either. There have been discussions about this for
years, always coming to the same resolution, the one being discussed at
this point in time.
