Hi all,

Has anyone experienced the same problem with Google Gemini?

When I open the page and press **Tab** or the letter **E** to jump to
the "enter a prompt" field, then press the spacebar to activate focus
mode, nothing happens.

I tried restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled, and even reset the
configuration to factory defaults, but the problem still occurs. At the
moment, the only workaround is to enable *"Automatic focus mode for
focus changes"* in Browse mode settings. However, if I leave this option
off, I can’t activate the edit box at all.

I’m considering creating an issue for this on GitHub, but I’d like to
confirm here first whether this is an NVDA issue or something specific
to my PC. If you’ve encountered the same problem, please let me know.

**Environment:**

* NVDA 2025.3
* Windows 11 22H2

Thanks,
Cuong

It's working fine for me in Firefox, you didn't mention your browser. You said the page, so I presume you're on the web?

You didn't say what browser or browsers you used.

I tested this using Windows 10, NVDA 2025.2, and browsers Firefox,
Chrome, Brave, and Edge. The edit field works properly in Firefox and
Chrome. It doesn't work properly in Brave and Edge. Trying more than
one browser when a site doesn't function as expected with the one being
used is one of the first trouble shooting steps that should be taken.

I doubt this is an NVDA issue.

A correction:
I was wrong. On testing Chrome again, the prompt didn't work properly
in that browser, either. It is important to have one not Chrome browser
on a machine. It may work when Chrome-based browsers don't work
properly on a site.

I use it relatively often, and use NVDA+space to toggle input/forms mode
on, and hasn't given me any problems/hassles recently at all?

I tested it using Windows 1 0 2 2H2 (AMD6 4) build 1 9 0 4 5.6 3 2.

1. Visit Gemini.google.com.

2. Google Chrome: Press E navigates to the input, pressing Spacebar does
not respond, it should enter focus mode as expected.

3. Firefox: Work as expected.

Likewise.
I actually find Gemini the easiest to use of the AI engines so far.
On Firefox I am jumped into the edit field immediately the page loads. I typed the prompt and press enter.
I then wait for the response a couple of seconds, and then press control home to jump to the top of the page. Pressing H once or twice normally lands mee on the answer area of the page.
If I need to upload an image, I first of all copy the path of the image in File Explorer with control shift C, then switch to Gemini, press escape to exit the edit field and then press B until I hear upload file. I then press control v to paste the image path into the edit field.
Note, I think the control shift C command to copy path is only available in Windows 11 and not 10.

As an efficiency, David, you can copy and paste the image directly from explorer into the Gemini window. The browser will upload it for you.

Hello, I am experiencing this issue as well. It seems we need to manually switch by pressing the NVDA key and the spacebar. I believe it's an accessibility problem, but I am not certain. I continue to use it by switching between focus mode and browse mode with the NVDA key plus space.
Regards

I use Gemini very frequently on my Windows 11 machine with NVDA and am
experiencing no issues of any kind with it. I find it to be the quickest
responder of all AI applications I have tried.

Kind regards

Late to the conversation, but it is best that you use Gemini signed into your Google account and even better instal the Gemini application on your Windows computer as an application. Note: There is no official application for Gemini for Windows but you can achieve the same result by following the instructions below:

Using Google Chrome, you can install Gemini as a Progressive Web App (PWA) entirely with your keyboard. This will create a standalone application on your Windows computer, and you'll be able to launch it directly from your Start Menu, desktop, or taskbar.

Here are the keyboard-only instructions:

1. Press Ctrl + T to open a new tab.
2. Type `https://gemini.google.com/` in the address bar and press Enter.
3. Wait for the page to fully load.
4. To open the Chrome menu, press Alt + F. Your screen reader will announce "Main menu button," and a list of options will appear.
5. Use the Down Arrow key to navigate down the menu to the "Save and share" sub-menu. Your screen reader should announce this option.
6. Press the Right Arrow key to open the "Save and share" sub-menu.
7. Use the Down Arrow key to navigate to the "Install page as an application..." option.
8. Press Enter.
9. A pop-up window will appear asking you to confirm the installation. The focus should be on the "Install" button. Press Enter to confirm.

The Gemini application will now launch in its own window. To find it later, you can press the Windows Key and type "Gemini," then press Enter to open it. You can also pin it to your Taskbar

HTH, have a good one!

No problem here, either with Chrome or Edge, but they are both Chromium based browsers.
I don't have Firefox on this machine to test.
All the best
