I am using windows 11 25h2, nvda 2026.1. I use espeak which comes with nvda.
If I switch espeak voice to bangla, it announces hyphen minus after pressing minus syne from the keyboard. However, if the language is set to english, then espeak is only announcing dash. it is not announcing hyphen minus while using english uk voice of espeak. How can I have a similar experience with the Bangla voice of espeak?
I also want to rename the announcement of apostrophe. Being a native Bengali speaker, it is beyond my understanding why nvda announces typewriter apostrophes. Is there any way to change it?
I never had the above described issues in earlier versions of nvda. I have been using espeak with nvda for a long time. I am experiencing these after updating to 2026.1. I want to repeat again that I am using espeak which comes with nvda.

Hi Farhan

I am trying to reproduce what you are experiencing, without success for now.
Could you open a GitHub issue with clear steps to reproduce the issue and a log in debug mode so that I can use the same config and the same steps as you?

If you are not comfortable with GitHub, you may alternatively send me a message with all this information to cyrille dot bougot2 at laposte dot net.

Thanks.
Cheers,

Cyrille

Thank you. I can send you a log to your personal email address but I have forgotten how to generate a log. Could you remind me?

Hi Fahim

To take a log in debug mode:
* Press NVDA+q
* Choose "Restart with debug logging enabled" and press Enter to restart NVDA
* When NVDA is restarted, do something to reproduce your issue, e.g. read/write Bangla text
* Press NVDA+F1 to open the log viewer
* Press control+S to open the window to choose the file location where to save the log and save it
* Once done, take the file where you have created it and snd it to me. The default file name is nvda.log so it should be called this way if you have not chosen another name.

Also, does the issue also happen if you run NVDA with a brand new config, i.e.:
* Press Windows+R
* Type:
  nvda -c %tmp%\nvdaTestFolder

Note that when you have finished your tests, you can delete the folder %tmp%\nvdaTestFolder

Cheers,

Cyrille

Hi again Fahim

You no longer need to take a log. I have been able to figure why you have this issue (and why I could not reproduce in the first place).
Sorry, it was a side effect of untranslated Bangla GUI removal.

I'll see if I can provide a fix, hopefully for 2026.2.

Cheers,

Cyrille

Hi Fahim and Bangla users

I'm looking at Bangla symbol file restoration.

In this file there was the following for an "end sentence period": "দাড়ি"

Is it correct? Just asking because there was a mistake on this rule which prevented this symbol to be reported with this name in 2025.3.3. So I'd like to be sure  of it before I introduce it.

Cheers,

Cyrille

Cyrille,

It was primarily this particular message that drew me to this thread (although I will look through the other messages in a bit and reply if there’s anything to add), so I thought I should clarify this matter to you first:

Just like English, Bengali has several widely accepted, standard dialects which are primarily spoken in different ways across the State of West Bengal in India, a state named Tripura, and Bangladesh. In this context, the word ‘দাড়ি’ written here is a complete Bengali word which directly translates to ‘Beard’ in English.

Up until now, the way I have heard everyone pronounce the Bengali equivalent for a full stop is ‘দাঁড়ি.’ While the former word is spelled as দ + া + ড় + ি (which, as previously mentioned, is the Bengali equivalent of the English ‘Beard’), in this case, an additional symbol ‘’ (Chandrabindu) is placed after দ + া, followed sequentially by ড় + ি.

The symbol Chandrabindu is not a standalone letter, but a diacritical mark placed over vowels to make them nasalized.

Think of the way you pronounce the ‘a’ in the English words such as ‘can’t’ or ‘man’, where the sound vibrates partly through your nose. In Bengali, adding this symbol changes the meaning of a word completely. For example, “Kada’ (কাদা) means mud, but if you nasalize the vowel as ‘Kāḍā’ (কাঁদা), it means to cry.

Therefore, I think, in this context, ‘দাঁড়ি’ would be the appropriate Bengali equivalent for a full stop.

HTH,

Snehashish.

Yes but slide explanation is necessary. We use "।" in other words, দাড়ি to complete a sentence. However, we also use "." for abriviation, email address, web address and mathematical presentation. there we use either dot, দশমিক, or point to indecate "." symbol. Though you can correct their announcement, also try to suppress hyphen announcement twise and typewriter before epostropy.

Hi Dear Friends😊,

Seeking your inputs and comments  regarding the following matter:

Just wondering if anyone have experienced similar problems as follows:

While using google chrome, the command CTRL + L to go to the address does not work anymore.

Alternatively I also tried pressing ALT + D and this also did not work, that is it also fail to go to the address bar. Of google chrome.

The third method step I took is by pressing F6 many times this also did not give any response .

The next step I used is to toggle between the browse mode and focus mode and try the above 3 methods  for both modes. This also fail  to go to the address bar of Google Chrome.

I also made sure that google chrome was in normal mode and not in full screen mode when trying all of the above methods/steps.

Honestly I  am not sure what is going on with my NVDAwhile using google chrome latest version.

Kindly seeking advice and guidance regarding this matter.

The following are details of the software version I am currently using for your reference:

NVDA version 2026.1.1 (latest version)

Google Chrome Version 148.0.7778.179 (latest version)

Windows 11 Pro version 25H2 (OS Build 26200.8524)  (latest version)

Many thanks in advance

Best Wishes & Warmest Regards😊,

Ahmad Ismat

ALT+L is not working, ALT+D works as expected, never used ALT+L to get there. Chrome, check if it needs to be updated please. Also should not matter if in Browse/ Focus mode or if Chrome is maximized or not, the keyboard shortcut should work. Sorry no solution, just observations after testing at my end.

You seem to be blaming NVDA. there is no reason to do so. It is much
more likely that something has happened to the browser and the address
bar is no longer being displayed. Install Chrome over itself and see if
that solves the problem.

I wish it was made clearer to users that, unless a keyboard shortcut uses the NVDA key, it is very likely to be an application or operating system shortcut. This doesn't hold true for every gesture and of course not all addons, but the number of times sighted people have argued with me about doing something in Word, the browser or a file manager from the keyboard because I'm using a screen reader and they're not is ridiculous.

I agree with the general point you make but I don’t think this group is part of Brian’s Goups.io infrastructure with separate feeds for chats etc. As far as I am aware this group has no relationship with that owners “Chat” group and is not subject to his rules governing on topic discussions.

Hi Fahim and Snehashish.

Note that my question was for sentence ending dot,, a.k.a. full stop, not other dots.
So e-mail or web addresses would not be impacted by this choice.

To put it simply, sentence ending dots are defined, more or less, as  a dot:
* followed by a space
* or at the end of the text being read.
* and with no space before it

Thus it may unfortunately cover too dots in some abbreviations.

So do you confirm I should use "দাঁড়ি" anyway?

Thanks.

Cyrille,

I personally don’t have any problem with domains or places where the full stop is used outside of its actual usage.

Yeah, on my personal  opinion, you could proceed further.
