Hello Everyone. Yesterday (19.01.24) I had joined the pre-course session and I admit that this was an encouraging session to me. Earlier I had attended one such FDP course for the first time in 2021. Each and every points discussed were new to me then. Though I have taken certain online classes throughout the period till then but yet to create online courses. After attending the said course in 2021, I feel that, creation of a course in MOOC need 3 important support --  a) Proper training in planning of a course (design), b) Proper technical support (easy access to different free and paid tools), c) Easy approval process of such courses in different platforms ( Swayam portal and like portals). As a teacher of Bengali Literature (even certain skill based course on literature) I have found no such online courses available in any platform like Swayam or NPTEL. So there are ample scope ahead. Hope the upcoming course will help me in all fronts. Thanks.

Hello everyone. I'm Jyotirmoy Sengupta. To me, learner centricity of MOOC is assured by the comment that a learner can access huge and divers sources of information, may be termed as study materials, to satisfy his or her perfection. Thank you.

Greetings,

Somewhere in 2022, I took a MOOC titled le français pour l'université by Université Grenoble Alpes.

This MOOC had constant interaction on the discussion forum which included structured and personalised feedback by the instructors, along with the other participants. The interaction and feedback majorly centred around feedback on peer-reviewed assignments, along with certain discussions on logistical concerns. In my opinion, this element corresponds to the Learner eXperience Interaction (LxT) element of the Learner Centric MOOC model.

Thank you,
Anthony GOMES

Hi All,

This is my attempt to join the discussion via email, as seen from the instructions in the unit "How to participate in Discussion Forum (LxI)".

I see that two learners, Jyotirmoy Sengupta and Anthony Gomes, have already participated in this discussion and provided their inputs based on courses/programmes that they have attended. Both the learners have provided very interesting inputs that can further generate more intense discussions on the idea of learner-centricity as understood by various course designers and learners.

Personally, as a course Instructor I look forward to these discussions that provide me with learning opportunities. Especially artefacts like the screenshots shared by Anthony Gomes provide me with specific ideas on facilitation through technology. So I encourage more learners to join this discussion and provide artefacts that could benefit the larger learner community.

Regards

Dear Sushil Rao,
You need to identify a specific point in the MOOC where you have encountered a focus on learner-centricity, indicating that the course was designed with the learners in mind. You can either pick up a point from this MOOC course or any other MOOC course that you have earlier attended.
You can also go through the replies posted by Mr Jyotirmay and Mr Anthony for more clarification.

Happy learning !

I define Learner-centricity as the deliberate incorporation of hidden cues within the course content to influence learners' behavior, such as incorporating thought exercises. For example, I participated in an online webinar where I learned about a 'Leadership Skills' course by Prof Vishal Gupta from IIM A on the Coursera platform. In this course, Prof Gupta encourages learners to pause the video, grab a pen and paper, and jot down their reflections, providing a simple yet effective way to break the monotony of passive watching -you can find the course Leadership Skills Course by Prof Vishal Gupta
 https://www.coursera.org/learn/leadershipskills#modules.

I also highly appreciate the initial clips of this course, where four professors engage in a group discussion about their perspectives on MOOCs. This approach made me feel actively involved in the conversation, and the diverse viewpoints did not guide my thought process in a linear manner.

Despite completing more than 10 online courses during the COVID days, I struggle to recall any impactful learner-centric designs within those courses.

Dear Divya,

That’s so well put! Thanks for sharing your experience, both with this MOOC so far, as well as with the webinar on Coursera. I’m sure a lot of your colleagues will also appreciate reading about your experiences.

I believe what you’ve also touched upon is the strategic tool of using a Reflection Spot, a key element in the LCM model, which has multiple functions. The current MOOC will offer much insight about the uses of a Reflection Spot, and I hope it provides you with a more active and engaged form of learning.

Looking forward to reading more of your thoughts and experiences in the coming weeks. Happy learning!

This is my first experience with a Learner-Centric MOOC. So far, I have noticed an active engagement of learners in this discussion forum along with the interaction one can have with course instructors and coordinators which I consider extremely fruitful. It also helps me to learn more from my peers like Anthony Gomes, Divya Thakur and the rest who have shared such insightful experiences with LCMs.  Moreover, I think that the formative assessments or tasks assigned each week are very beneficial in holding a learner’s interest.

Dear Participant,
We are glad to hear your initial experience with the Learner-Centric MOOC has been fulfilling! We appreciate you for highlighting the significance of formative assessment.
It's crucial to address summative assessments as the submission deadlines are approaching i.e., 07-02-2024, 23:59 IST, where each participant is graded with marks based on the followings.
1. AQs based Quiz on LxT 1.1
2. AQs based Quiz on LxT 1.2
3. Knowledge Quiz for week 1
4. RQ based Quiz on Lx1-Week 1

Out of two Assimilation quizzes (AQs) quizzes, the best one will be selected for grading with 20% weightage
Knowledge Quizzes– 70% weightage
Reflection quizzes (RQ) - 10% weightage.

Thank you for sharing that perspective! I completely agree with you on the significance of learner-centricity in MOOCs. Hello!
I have enrolled in several self-paced MOOCs provided on the SWAYAM platform itself, but I can identify only this course, "Designing Learner MOOCs," to map with all the requirements of being learner-centric. Not to name just one point:
  • The reflection spots were provided since the live interactions we had with the course instructor as well as the warm-up with Google-form-led questions where perspectives towards MOOCs were taken, analogies for MOOCs were derived, and the motive behind joining any MOOC were like LeDs.It helped me to think about and dig deep into the whole idea of MOOCs and their existence. Also, it made me curious to take up this course.
  • The Class-Central Page is a resource where reports on various scenarios in the MOOC industry are provided globally. It is the LxT, followed by AQs based on it.
  • The 4 LxD were assigned customized feedback with detailed explanations for both correct and incorrect responses. Therefore, the learners are benefited and motivated further to learn.
  • Finally, this LxI is learner-centric, as it has helped and assisted in peer interaction and learning.

Dear Surbhi Sharma,

Thank you for acknowledging our comprehensive understanding of the course, which endeavors to introduce all facets of learner-centric MOOCs through an analysis of various self-paced MOOCs previously attended.

It sounds like you've really immersed yourself in the learner-centric aspects of the "Designing Learner MOOCs" course on the SWAYAM platform! Your description highlights several key elements that contribute to a learner-focused experience, such as reflection opportunities, interactive sessions with instructors, and tailored feedback.

Reflective exercises like the Google-form-led questions seem to have been particularly effective in engaging you and prompting deeper thinking about the nature and purpose of MOOCs. Additionally, the use of resources like the Class-Central Page to provide broader industry insights adds another dimension to the learning experience, enriching your understanding of the field.

The emphasis on customized feedback is crucial for fostering continuous improvement and motivation among learners. By offering detailed explanations for both correct and incorrect responses, the course ensures that learners receive personalized guidance that helps them grasp concepts more effectively.

Moreover, the emphasis on peer interaction and learning further reinforces the learner-centric approach of the course. Collaborative learning environments can enhance understanding and retention by providing opportunities for discussion, exchange of ideas, and collective problem-solving. Finally, it is clear that the "Designing Learner MOOCs" course has been designed with your needs and learning experience in mind, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in exploring the world of MOOCs.

Wishing you endless opportunities for growth and discovery !

Hello everyone!
I took four courses earlier and am currently enrolled in three courses provided on the SWAYAM platform itself.

But I felt very comfortable only with this course, "Designing Learner MOOCs.".  The organized structure of various components, followed by immediate assimilation / practice questions, is very helpful to me in understanding the content without any bumbling, boring, or even screen fatigue.

From my experiences with the warm-up week and first week of this course, I feel it has many learner-centric points, like warm-up preparations, shorter videos of LeD, LbD (explanation for each correct and incorrect choice is useful), and LxI (useful in view of the different perceptions).

Another added advantage is that all the components except LxI can be accessed through the mobile app. It may attract Z-gen learners.

However, through the desktop version only, the learners are able to join the discussion forum.

Thank you

Hello all,
This is the first MOOC I am enrolled in, so my response is based on my experience of this course so far. Many of my peers together have already highlighted almost all aspects of the Learner-Centricity in this course. If I have to pick one to elaborate on, it would be the Discussion Forum activities, which are part of the Learner eXperience Interactions. Apart from the focus questions and responses to those, the threads which are being started by the peers would truly open up diverse paths of learning. It has more potential therefore to address the diverse interests and diverse learning curves of the learners. The diverse audience is certain to bring their diverse learnings, perspectives (hence what they find relevant and how they approach the topic of discussion) to the fore. For this reason, I consider it a very important part of the LC model in a MOOC. It is a time-consuming to go through all responses, of course, but it also helps in reducing the distance (which is inevitable in a MOOC) between the peer learners.

Thank you, Ma'am, for elaborating on my reflections. Indeed, this MOOC will be a helpful resource for learning to me.

Also, as guided by part B of this LxI I have realized that we all are in consensus with the fact that discussion forums for MOOCs are quite resourceful for the learners. These discussion forums provide a platform for peer-interaction, active learning and engages the learners. It enables to get a wider perspective of a topic and helps in connecting the people with similar interests of research and work.
Besides, the point of addressing language-based skill courses by one of the peer-learner is quite intriguing for me. I guess more researchers and language experts needs to be trained in the field to develop and design such courses.

This is my first MOOC in any real sense of the term. It looks to define learner-centricity through four dimensions: learning through Dialogue, Doing, Interactions with peers, and Extension Trajectories. I am hoping to learn more about these dimensions in the coming weeks before I can form any reasonable opinion about the ways in which these dimensions promote learner-centricity.
Based on my limited experience of the Warm-up Week and Week 1, my very tentative observations are as follows: Dialogue and Doing were closely aligned with the material presented through the videos. Dialogues helped me examine how closely my thoughts/beliefs matched with those of the expert(s). Doing helped me check if I had assimilated the information provided in the videos. Trajectory led me to resources outside of the videos. These materials helped me understand the opinions expressed in the video. All these three dimensions helped me learn the information being presented through the various resources shared on the course page. Strictly speaking, I didn't have any "say" in the matter nor did it test my reasoning ability (probably it is too early in the course). I go to express my own opinions., reason and question/doubt the opinions being presented through the "Interaction" dimension. Thus, this dimension was learner-centric in a very different sense that it promoted critical inquiry. I hope to use this facility more effectively and wisely in the coming weeks.

So much for now!

Hey all,

Couldnt go thru the course contents so far.  Today attended all the session of Week1 at one go.  I was filled with lot of surprise elements in the contents, the difficulty level was beyond expectations.  This may be the first MOOC which I have undertaken which contains multiple aspects.  This methodology will definitely help creating learner centric approach.

Its never been my interest to peep into others information, but here knowing peers is so so important is been highlighted and well taken.

Would like to interact and connect with all in the group. Would also be happy to learn in groups.  Do connect, if anyone interested to join.

Dear all,
I have already completed two MOOC courses on SWAYAM platform. One of the learner centric approach I felt is the peer group discussion, that helped the learners very well. Moreover, the interactive live sessions in the mid of the course will help the learners to clear their doubts in the course.

Hello Everyone
I enrolled myself on SWAYAM for many MOOC but I never completed them as due to some other important professional work I forgot to complete assignments on time. But this time I promise to complete this course as I got motivation from Discussion forum replies.
I think some alarming mails or Whatsapp messages should be put on reminding last date of assignments and quizes.

Thank you for highlighting those two elements. Were you able to participate in the live interaction this MOOC offered 2 weeks ago?

In your opinion as a participant, and also as an educator, how frequent should these live interactive sessions be? Looking forward to your response.

Hello everyone,

I have completed a total of five MOOC courses to date. Throughout these courses, I have experienced a learner-centric approach, which was evident through activities such as Discussion Forum activities, Reflection spots, and Practice questions directly related to the video content and discussion forum activities.

In my own MOOC on spoken skills, in the module on listening skills, I would pause at regular intervals to ask participants to reflect on a segment of conversation they had heard in the form of an audio clip and ask a question that would require thinking and response. Thus the reflection spot was used in several ways -- to think about a concept as well as to think about specific language material. The various possible answers would then be summarised.

I have taken up and completed several MOOCs as a learner on diverse topics, and created two as an instructor. One point that always seemed to engage learners and stands out, in terms of learner-centricity, is the use of interactive quizzes and assessments. They not only gauge understanding but also provide instant feedback, allowing learners to grasp concepts better and at their own pace. It's like a personalized learning journey tailored to each participant's needs. I will attach some examples in due course of time.

Good afternoon
As a learner of this course,  i came to know of the way to interact with the learner's through the content itself. As a teacher, between the  long lecture hours i used to tell my students, some other facts (astronomy between chemistry ) to drag them into the subject. But this way of chunking the topics and pausing the lecture to think and interact in between boost my confidence that i can understand the concept (while teaching) and it never vanishes from my mind. Thank you

I am Prof O S K S Sastri from the Central University of Himachal Pradesh. I have taken the first MOOC by Prof Sebastian Gurung and Dr Peter Norwiz on Artificial intelligence mentioned in our course module here and completed it successfully. It has been a wonderful experience. Prof Sebastian would teach a small content and then there would be a question like MCQ or Fill in the blank in which we have to give our input and if we give a wrong answer a new video will start explaining the concept again or the right way to obtain the answer and the rest of the content will proceed only after you correctly answer the question for reflection. I was amazed at the fill-in-the-blank questions. This is something I have yet to see in our current course. Here, the instructor merely says to pause for a moment and think but does not take any input from the learner.  I would like to see interactive content that is integrated into the videos for learning dialogue parts and also a session on how to create such content using, say Moodle software. Thanks in advance.

Dear All,
I read through all your discussions and as many LCM experiences are covered, which makes us feel the learner centric approach of the MOOC, one thing which I felt and not mentioned in the forum was - " the urge created by the design of this MOOC to eagerly come back to the portal and continue the learning. I feel making the learner to come back to the session wherever he/she left with an enthusiasm and curiousness to learn more and in depth is my experience of LCM in this MOOC.

Hello everyone. Previously I had attended a dozen of offline FDP course, few online FDP courses.  I did not attend any MOOC before this.  The things were discussed in the pre-course session entirely new to me. Since I not having the previous experience, I may view the learner centric aspects from this course point of view. As pointed out by my peers like Anthony Gomes, Divya Thakur, and others, now I understand an active engagement of learners in the discussion forum helps me to learn more insightful experiences with LCMs.

I feel the elements promoting active learning (just like the traditional way constitute the teacher centric), peer learning (focus questions, discussion forums, intentional video pauses and asking quizzes constituting learner centric elements) also learning by doing is similar to implementation of what the learner assimilate are very vital for building a design template with learners in mind. Now, I feel good to learn a right course   in a right manner.

Personally, as a teacher, I look these kinds of discussions which will upskill not only my learning journey but also believe to be add more benefits to my student learners in the future content delivery. so, requesting more learners to share their views on focus questions posted in the discussion forums.

The surprise (in positive sense) elements include -
1. Multiple tools of teaching
2. Discussion Forums
3. Post session analysis
4. Pauses in between videos and its interpretation
5. True meaning of learner centric approach

The difficulty level of course is meant by the Quiz designed in such way that I find myself to be elevated for understanding and answering the questions.. The abbreviations like LeD, AQs etc. need some time to digest. But trying to get as much as possible.

Thanks for the concern!!

Greetings, Jyothi Shankar,

It’s great to hear about your engagement in various professional development courses, both offline and online. Your openness to new experiences is commendable.

Understanding the learner-centric aspects of this course, especially through active engagement in discussion forums, is a valuable perspective. Peer learning, intentional video pauses, and quizzes all contribute to a dynamic learning environment. Learning by doing, where learners apply what they’ve assimilated, is indeed crucial for effective learning.

As a teacher, your commitment to upskilling not only benefits your own learning journey but also enhances the content delivery for your students. Encouraging fellow learners to share their insights on focus questions in the discussion forums fosters a collaborative and enriching experience.

Keep the discussions going, and may your teaching endeavors continue to thrive!  Happy learning.

Dear Shruthi Sidhaye

Certainly! It’s wonderful to hear about the positive surprises you’ve encountered during this course. Let’s break down your observations:

1.      Multiple Tools of Teaching: Having a variety of teaching tools ensures a dynamic learning experience. Each tool brings a unique perspective and engages learners in different ways.

2.      Discussion Forums: Engaging in discussion forums allows for peer interaction, diverse viewpoints, and deeper understanding. It’s a space where learners can share insights and learn from one another.

3.      Post-Session Analysis: Reflecting on sessions after they’ve concluded is crucial. It helps consolidate learning, identify areas for improvement, and reinforces key concepts.

4.      Pauses in Between Videos: These intentional pauses provide time for reflection, note-taking, and internalizing information. They enhance comprehension and retention.

5.      True Meaning of Learner-Centric ApproachPrioritizing the needs, interests and preferences of the learners. It involves tailoring content, activities, and assessments to meet their needs.

Coming to the course difficulty, challenging quizzes can indeed elevate understanding.

Abbreviations like “LeD” (which likely stands for Learning Dialogue) and “AQs” (Assimilation Quizzes) may take a while to get familiar, but no worry as they are not going to be more in number.

Keep embracing these elements, and your commitment to continuous learning will undoubtedly benefit you.

Happy Learning,

Think of a MOOC that you have participated as a learner or offered as an instructor. Identify one point in that MOOC where you have experienced / have designed for learner-centricity. If you have not yet taken a MOOC, you can use the experience of this course till now to answer the focus question.

I like to learn and enhance my skills through MOOCs. I have learned three different courses based on 3D animation using blender through a MOOC  and one more MOOC based on a Women startup programme by IIM Bangalore.
The courses were Learner centric as there are assignments, quizzes, discussion forum , video pause, etc. all this helps me to keep learning actively. I found discussion forum always helpful when one get stuck to understand certain thing in the course.

One point where learner-centricity can be observed in this MOOCs was the flexibility in pacing and scheduling of the course material. This MOOC offered a variety of formats for delivering content, such as videos, readings, quizzes, and interactive assignments, catering to different learning styles and preferences. This learner-centered approach empowers learners to take control of their learning journey and tailor it to their individual needs and interests.

I'm Ravi Palekar, an L&D specialist at Ethosh Designs Pvt. Ltd. I have not yet participated as an instructor or developer in any MOOC course. But I have taken a few courses on other MOOCs such as edX and IDF. I'm taking a SWAYAM course for the first time and thoroughly enjoying the learning experience. Swayam, as an Indian MOOC, makes communication and interaction with course organizers or DFMs considerably easier and more straightforward than foreign MOOCs do.

The course faculty & coordination team is really supportive, and I can communicate with them without difficulty. I think the course "Designing Learner Centric MOOCs" is really fascinating and well constructed. The course content covers everything and is explained in layman's terms.

Dear All,

I have experienced the Learner Centricity during the following MOOC course :
Course Name: ICT in Teaching and Learning
Time period: July 2023 semester
Platform: SWAYAM

As a part of resources, the contents are not only shared in the form of video lecture but also lessons are shared on the same topic. At the end of every lesson, a discussion topic is initiated based on each topic.

Here the following Learner Centric elements are addressed:
Learner experience
Learning by doing

Additionally the Lessons were designed in such a structured manner that in case a learner is unable to watch video due to internet issues, the concept is learned through lessons.

Thank you.

Good afternoon Everyone.
This is Mr. Gulsan KUmar Behera, currently working as an Asst. Prof. at Kalinga Univeristy, Raipur.
I have enrolled in this MOOC program on this very Swayam platform for the first time. I found this course, "Designing Learner MOOCs," interesting which will help to map with all the requirements of being learner-centric. There are few points i want to share:
  • The reflection spots were provided since the live interactions we had with the course instructor as well as the warm-up with Google-form-led questions where perspectives towards MOOCs were taken, analogies for MOOCs were derived.
  •  The motive behind joining any MOOC were like LeDs will help us to think critically the whole idea of MOOCs and their existence.

Good evening all,
I have successfully completed 8 courses on SWAYAM platform. As like many courses offered there, all these courses involved weekly course content (video/text) followed by weekly assignments. I sincerely felt that immediate application of concepts understood and formative assessment were major missing in those courses.

As the current course contains LeD involving chunked content with few of the refection spots, caters to learner engagement, LbD activities gives opportunity to apply the concepts learned in Led, LxT helps to go through various other resources on the same topic discussed in LeD, and LxI provides an opportunity to learn from others enrolled in same course. All these activities are leaner centric which keeps learner promote active engagement throughout the course and deeper understanding.

Thank you.

Hello everyone,  I'm Sasi V. I took a MOOC's on Academic writing, Dr. Ajay Semalty was the Course coordinator. I was so much impressed the way the content was delivered in simple manner. Learners were made to learn and complete the course on understanding open educational resources. Also we made short one minute video as a part the course. The course also had live interaction session where our doubts were clarified.

From the dicussion,  I could identify that few friends views on a MOOC especially Designing Learner centric MOOC was similar to my perception.

Hi all,

I have taken two MOOCs on Nptel till now. I have not found any LC in those two courses. We had only assignments to evaluate the learnings through the course. But the assignments were simple enough to give motivation to proceed ahead.

Another example, where I experienced Learner Centricity - is in a course offered by Addy Labs - on topics such as color theory. He asks the learners to buy tools such as Tangram and Color wheel, and also asks viewers to make a hand painted color wheel. I have gone through this channel around 2019. The channel can be found here: Weekend online classes for creative careers like Car Design, Animation and Interior design etc. (youtube.com)

In this course, I liked the way we were given the choice of two trajectories - which makes the learner to choose the concept that is of their interest.

Thanks,
Vamsi.

MOOC gaining prominence, there has to be a science of designing MOOCs so that it remains effective and it is presented by incorporating all its facets including relaince of tools and technology. The Week-1 Course gave a clear perspective of MOOC and enlightended us that it is not merely limited to running some slides and making learning event as monotnous and non-productive. The exposure to LeD, LbD, LxI, LxT  sets a clear path and gives us a correct and logical way to structure and deliver MOOC making learning a joyful and really useful experience. I am learning a lot.
Thanks IITB Team

Dear Patil KV,

Widespread usage in secondary education is indeed one of the desired and practical use cases of MOOC. Based on your experience of this MOOC or other MOOCs what do you think might be the challenges in using MOOCs at the secondary level?
