I have never been able to figure this out, so I am asking here (with a CC to ISPF-L).

When I am editing a COBOL source member in ISPF EDIT and I enter the bare COMPARE command without any argument, I get this pop-up menu:

Edit Compare Settings and Command Parameters
Command ===>

SuperC Options: Display options:
Enter "/" to select option Lines displayed
/ Case Insensitive Compare with EXCLUDE . . . 5 (0 - 12)
/ Ignore Reformat Differences Label Prefix . . . O (A - Y)
Data Contains DBCS Characters
Use a label of the form .Oxxxx to
change the highlighting of a line
to mark it as only existing in
the current file.

Compare Command Parameters:
Name . . . . . +
Volume . . . .
Enter "/" to select option Enter "/" to select option
Exclude Save
SYSIN Set SYSIN data set

Enter END to save changes. If NAME is set, Compare will run

I did figure out that the "Name" field is to specify the file to compare against, but how and where do I specify compare parameters (like "CMPCOLM 007:072" for instance)?

I have tried entering a "/" on the "SYSIN" and on the "Set SYSIN data set" options but neither one lets me specify or create a SYSIN file for the compare containing the options I want to use.

Any help or RTFM you can provide is appreciated.

Current z/OS level is 2.3 if that makes a difference.

Peter

Peter,

I normally use COMPARE in an edit macro so I don't normally specify parameters. Just playing around with it, if I select "/ Set SYSIN data set ", and enter an END command I get the following where I can specify a dataset that contains compare parameters.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Edit Compare - SYSIN data set Specification
Command ===>

Data set 'my.userid.SUPERC.STMTS'
member . .

Enter / to edit

Maybe entering the END command is key. I pressed ENTER several times and was wondering why a second panel wasn't coming up to specify my SYSIN file.

Thanks,

Charles

Thanks Charles, but when I put "/" on that field and then use the END command, it immediately goes to the compare process and I never get that pop-up for the SYSIN data set.

This could be a relic of a prior MVS/ISPF administration team where we have some "custom" ISP* libraries ahead of the standard IBM ones. I will have to test with a vanilla logon (with no extra ISP* libraries) and see if the behavior is different then.

Appreciate the help.

Indeed. Even as one of my frequent bad habits is to customize PF3.

I've used ISRSUPC in batch more than via panels. A major shortcoming of
TSO/CMS Rexx its lack of instream data or the ANSI "ADDRESS WITH redirection".
Should be an RFE for ANSI support.

As I remember, using the slash indicates quotes or to break out the character entered.

Sorry, not for those fields - Both the "Set SYSIN data set" and "SYSIN" fields are one-byte "selection" fields (it says right above them "Enter "/" to select option").

Sorry. I missed the part that this was the selection slash on a panel.
