I put this flowchart together for use by our teachers at KML. If you are using Zoom and find it useful, feel free to distribute it.

Thanks! I’ve found with waiting room and password this is virtually impossible—well, never say never!

Enjoy the Easter weekend everyone!

All,
I would highly recommend using the password feature of zoom. It's become nothing short of mandatory across my organizations to do so. This mitigates all disruptions on the front end.

Just a recommendation.

We have run into students who are passing the Zoom meeting link and password that they receive on to other people who are then doing the Zoombombing. Without going to the paid version of Zoom with domain authentication, I haven't found a way to mitigate that problem.

I don't think you need to pay for Zoom to get the waiting room. That's your surefire way to prevent Zoombombers.

You are correct. I use free and the waiting room feature for every meeting.

We have found that the waiting room is not a surefire way of dealing with this. I created the flowchart to help a teacher who was hit with this yesterday who was using a waiting room. The problem was that the bomber had changed their display name to match a student's who was legitimately in the class.

Making sure these are both turned off in your Settings may prevent them from changing into a legitimate name, it may also prevent students from just being goofy, I have had Bugs Bunny in class but it was one of my students just being funny.

I just saw this article that law enforcement is promising prosecution ...

Maybe what you’ve experienced is harmless, but, even so, this may dissuade the tricksters.

Yep, just had another incident this afternoon where a kid posted the link and password from their class on Instagram for the whole world to see and someone used that to impersonate the co-teacher of the class to get past the waiting room "security". None of this is a reason that I would stop using Zoom as the same technique could be leveraged to zoombomb Google Meet.

Per Mashable this morning Google disables Zoom on their employee's computers "because it's not safe" (or it's the competition) and this afternoon the US Senate recommended not using it -  meeting IDs and passwords are floating on the dark web already. Those who do use Zoom probably saw the email update they sent out this morning about the "New Security Toolbar Icon for Hosts, Meeting ID No Longer Displayed" among  quite a few other security updates they've been enabling.

While Zoom has its issues, the benefits it brings at this point outweigh the negatives in the way that our school currently uses it. I appreciated this article which expresses that same sentiment - https://slate.com/technology/2020/04/partial-defense-zoom-coronavirus.html.

I do also have to say that the type of zoombombing that we are experiencing could be almost entirely dealt with if we moved from the FREE product to the paid version, so I won't complain too loudly.

DSA is using Zoom. We progressed from free Zoom and passwords and waiting rooms to paying for our entire K-12 school system. We cannot afford zoombombing for K-5 and really it is unacceptable at all levels. Josh is correct that HS students will post meeting passwords and try to sneak in with what appear to be valid names. In large classes, our teachers make mistakes in managing classes during a long day of synchronous learning. And Bob martens is correct - students are smart and some are bored.

This past weekend (April 3) our tech guys - shout out to Michael Babler and Phil Kurbis - got our domain authentication and vanity page complete. Monday's instruction was awesome. Student names and emails were authenticated via SSO using our student's Microsoft credentials. This worked great as we schedule Zoom meetings integrated inside Microsoft Teams.

I am not suggesting this is a solution for everyone, but making our teacher's lives smoother in tough times and keep our kids safe from bombers is vitally important.

God bless your holy week celebrations.

I'm going to just voice some concerns I have about the medium-term future as well. There is a good chance that this mode of instruction (distance) may be with us for a while and may be brought to the fore more in the future as well as a response to possible outbreaks now that everyone has moved to it. I'm not sure what it looks like at that point, or what changes are made, but the time to start having discussions about what tools are needed in the longer-term is very soon because budgets will need to be adjusted, expectations set, and training ramped up beyond emergency remote teaching. I pray this is a "once in a lifetime" sort of situation that arises, but I think there is as likely an outcome that this becomes more common going forward.

Bob makes a terrific point. Our schools are getting a wakeup message with how pedagogy and technology work together. In an emergency, we make due. But going through this experience points us to think long term. What do we want our learning platforms to look like and how can they best serve us and the students. Budgets have to be revised in the future; free does not cut it. Sorry to be blunt. We are seeing in many cases how proactive versus reactive is causing different responses and levels of stress.

I started teaching in the days of Apple ][s when the rule of thumb was ⅓ hardware, ⅓ software, ⅓ training. I am not saying that works for today's tech world, but we did spend $. No matter the reason this time (pandemic), this should push all involved in learning to be aware of how decisions on technology might affect student learning.

God bless you all this blessed aster weekend.

In Christ,
