At our hummer feeders in Wilson, Niagara County, we always get some action but typically we do not get a lot in May, or even early June. I don’t notice much difference this year. Activity at the feeder seems to gradually pick up during the summer. My suspicion has always been that the hummers prefer natural food resources at this time of the year.

Good birding!

I finally saw a male come to our feeders in Orchard Park this morning - and, otherwise, we've only been getting a couple of visits per day, which is very unusual. I've had several sightings in local parks and preserves, including a female on nest, though.
Other than Martha's report, the few folks I've talked to have said their feeder visits have been down too.  I wonder how the season will turn out overall, with a larger population study, perhaps using eBird data.  At the moment from my limited perspective, it seems to be a concerning year for them.

I have friends in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who have fed birds in their backyard for decades. In one of their recent emails to me they mentioned they have seen very few Hummingbirds at their nectar feeder this Spring. They usually get several so this is unusual for them.

I haven't seen my usual hummingbird numbers. I had one come to the feeder early on, and it hasn't been back. Very unusual for my yard. (south end of Conesus Lake) I have always had at least one pair, but this year it was only one lone male and he hasn't returned.

Very few as of June 7 in my area of WNY Zipcode 14070. I did have 1 male + 1 female Hummingbird but once our weather turned chilly & rainy I have not seen them at the nectar feeders. Unusual for my yard.

We usually have 2 pair--each lives on one side of our property. They come at approximately 2pm, when I change the feeder each day. It is in the shade by then, as well. The pairs take turns through the afternoon and evening.  This year we have sporatic visits after 5pm...with little or no consistency. I will continue to provide fresh feed, and cross my fingers that activity picks up. A female has been coming the past two days.

After several visits at my window a week ago, I felt compelled to get a feeder up ASAP.
Within 2 minutes of filling it, I had a female using it.

While I have tried to distinguish them, its pretty hard.  I have had continuous visits by at least
2 females and 2-3 males.  The feeder was up last Thursday, and the males showed up by Saturday.

There have not been the extended battles I recall from last year, but there have been displays and
skirmishes going on a few days, although things have settled down now.

I would not suspect that visitation is lower than usual, but it is possible the count is down a few from
last year.

Nearly anytime of the day until last light, I can expect a visit within a few minutes.  I'm using the
simplest of feeders--just four flowers on an 8 ounce reservoir--which was just enough to get through
the week.
