Hi everyone,
I am new to teaching and I will teach students of pesarlanka, Andhra Pradesh. I will be teaching 6th class science. Did anyone taught 6th class science? Do anyone of you have material that I can re-use like PPTs, any other material or any hyperlinks? This would help me a lot.

Hi Sai

I'm teaching 6th Science for Kishkindapalem school (A.P) students. Initially I used to deliver classes through PPT that I prepare for each lesson, which will have all topics, pictorial images, YouTube links, assessments and some GK points. I got a feedback which would be worthwhile to share here. Children are used to Text book teachings, therefore now the main source of teaching is referring Text book in class and then supplemented by the PPT resources I prepared. In between, YouTube videos need to be played for easy understanding for students.

I'm attaching the resources I prepared for couple of lessons for your reference.

Please feel free to call me, so that we can exchange few ideas.

Regards
Satyam

Hi Satyam,

I am also new to eVidyaloka (taken 2 classes so far)..I m teaching 7th science in Hindi and I just finished making a ppt for the 1st chapter. I am yet to deliver the class using PPT. I find it strange that you got feedback that kids prefer textbook teaching over visual images and bullet points (which are easier to remember and understand). Can you please share from where did you get this feedback- from the students or someone else?

Happy teaching!
Will let you know my experience with PPT teaching...

Regards,
Indu

Hi ,

I am taking 8th Science . Whatever Satyam said is quite true from my experience so far. Text book is children's primary reference for their exams and homework. PPTs needed to be prepared in such a way that kids are able to easily 'relate' that to the contents of the Textbook and grasp quickly . So i always ensured 'Images' & 'Headings' used in PPT are exactly same as used in Text book. However the bullet points under that heading can be simplified essence of what we understood from their textbook and our own research on internet.

Regards
Sakthi

Hello everyone

I teach 7th science in Hindi (chachgura,jharkhand).

What Satyam and Sakthi pointed out is quite true as the main mode of learning for children is textbooks.
Textbooks are the only source for them to look back and understand later on as the ppt /videos we provide them with can't be followed up by them for reference later on.
And all the information we give them in the class is only going to end up as a separate notebook which more often is never picked up again by the children.

Also because of audiovisual technical difficulties ,it is easier for them to open their books and see the pictures or spellings of what you are trying to say .
Open book teaching is quite a good method too ,as it makes them aware of where a particular topic is and visual memory is built.

I haven't yet tried the open book teaching but I have seen that kids are used to opening the books nevertheless.

For their school exam purpose ,the NCERT books are enough and after reading most of the 7th science book ,I can say it is more then enough at their level.
When I was in 7th,there weren't half the things in those books which are given as extra information in blue boxes now.

The blue boxes also cover the application based questions which can assess the child's understanding of that topic .
Some of the information hidden in the lines is what I read when I was preparing for medical entrances in class 11th and some information from life sciences chapters are very important concepts (done in detail in medicine) covered in a very crisp manner.

What I am trying to convey is that NCERT books are written very well and even from ncert very basic questions are asked in their school examinations.

I feel the basics have to very strong for children to pick up extra information. And NCERT provides a good enough framework for preparing a class.
I try to keep the topic and subtopic sequence the same as getting ven in ncert.
For making the class more elaborate ,one can try to read the blue boxes(Do You Know Ones) and interesting points given in them.

Another important thing Sakthi pointed out are the images and tables given in ncert.
I personally prefer incorporating the same images, flowcharts and tables in my ppt as the consolidation is better when same pictures are seen multiple number if times.
And of course the children cannot see any the images we show them, again.
Also they may be required to draw images and flowcharts in their exams and it is better for them to understand the pictures in their books well.

I try to make the important diagrams on whiteboard during the class while I ask them questions while labelling it.For eg- the types of teeth/dental arrangement in humans.

Videos and pictures that are not in the ncert ,but may be useful for supplementing the kids' understanding prove to be  good aids.

Thanks Sakthi and Rupika for your inputs..Very useful indeed..I also used the textbook material as the basic reference for my PPT, supplemented with more pictures and videos from the internet to make it more interesting for students..For eg., to explain stomata I added a highly magnified picture of a single stomata on a tomato leaf  (taken using an electron microsope) to give them a feel of how it actually looks..I hope this will be more exciting than viewing a diagram which renders the concept too abstract and boring.  I agree with Rupika that the quality of NCERT books have definitely improved a lot and its a pleasure to read them..In fact I also learned quite a few things from them. Therefore, it is sufficient to use as the main framework to which we can add extra fun material which the students will not be able to access otherwise..The ultimate goal for us is to make science interesting and fun for students so that they get all the exposure that is needed to feel motivated to pursue scientific knowledge. It's amazing how enthusiastic they all get when I play a video. In the last class, I played the following  BBC documentary video to demonstrate the mode of nutrition in insectivorous plants.

Hi,
I am also taking 8th class science in Hindi. They prefer text books as they can relate to their examples. Although PPTs can be used to ask a question or to inspire students with an example.

Hi Laxmi,
Welcome to evidyaloka. I am also a teacher of Science & Maths. Since it is your first class, I would suggest that you prepare for the topic as per the textbook/syllabus.
Try to keep your presentation simple and involve the students in understand the various concepts you're trying to teach them. From my experience, practice and practical applications of the concepts taught in Science usually keep the students interested.
At this point I would suggest that you can use the material given in the textbooks for teaching purposes. You may then later on make a special presentation only for those areas which need time to grasp.
I know from experience that most learning happens only through ... practice, practice, practice.

All the best.
Warm regards,
Devendra Rathor

Hi Laxmi,

Welcome to Evidyaloka..
In your first few classes, it is recommended to develop interaction with the students and make them comfort. We dont discuss about the local teachers. You can try to understand their daily life.

As far as syllabus is concerned, It is always good to coordinate with the local teacher and take their advise. Repeating the completed chapters may not interest the students.
Evidyaloka might have provided you the topics or a base scope. You can also search evidyaloka portal for online academic text books.
You can refer to Khanacademy.com website for help in teaching.
Also in the evidyaloka portal, u have work sheets and assignments which may help you engage the students in whatever you teach them.
In my opinion, the local teacher will anyhow try to complete the textbook syllabus, we should try to give the students a practical exposure to science experiments through online videos and simple presentations.

Thanks,
RAM.
