Dear Ecunetters,

If you use the Google Groups web interface to read notes in Ecunet groups, today you may begin to notice a horizontal blue bar toward the top of the groups page saying, “The old Google Groups will be going away soon. Switch to the new Google Groups.” Upon clicking Switch, you will see the new Google Groups.

The new version “offers a new and improved user interface, collaborative inbox, take and assign functionality, advanced search operators, new ways of viewing group content, and much more.”

For a complete overview and visual tour of the new web interface to Google Groups, go to: http://support.google.com/groups/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=46601

If you read and write your Ecunet group notes in the Google mail interface, or use email software or email app, you probably won’t notice any difference.

If you have questions about the new groups web interface, send a note to hel...@ecunet.org or send a note to the new-group...@ecunet.org group if you’d like to discuss the new interface.

Warm regards, Paul

I have never squeaked like frighten mouse before but, "Eek! Eek! Eek!"

I had to move back to the old location to figure out how to reply to
your message.

Eek is right! Lots of changes in the new interface.

My hope is that the new interface will work correctly when it comes to displaying the unread notes count in each of your groups. You can drag your most active groups to your "Favorites" section of the left-hand navigation so they are handy when you want to compose a new post or re-read something.

I do encourage you to take a look at the tour of the new Groups interface, posted here: http://support.google.com/groups/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=46601

If you prefer to watch a video demo of navigating (albeit rather quickly) the new interface, here's a recording from about a year ago when the preview of the groups interface came out. Press the little icon in the lower right of the player to enlarge to full screen: http://youtu.be/tpLHFgK3eMc

And, if you want to know specifically how to reply to a post in the new interface, here's a little recording I just made: http://screencast.com/t/JHtnoOP46  Press the full-screen control for a little sharper image.

Let me know if you have specific questions, Paul

I don't know what I did ... but now the "Post Reply" does appear.

Hi Peg,

There are two, similar-looking Web interfaces where you might be seeing notes:

1.      The Ecunet gmail interface, which you can log into at http://mail.google.com  This is important to look at for retrieving personal notes

2.      The mail interface is also a convenient place from which to navigate to the Google Groups web interface. Just go to the “More” link in the menu bar at the top of that page and select “Groups.”  It will probably open Groups in a new tab, so you can switch back to reading personal mail if you need to.

Since Mail and Groups have a similar look now, but have slightly different renderings of the “Reply” button, it could be that you were sitting in the Mail interface when you thought you were in Groups.

If this isn’t what is going on, please call me sometime so I can look over your shoulder to see what you’re seeing.

Warm regards, Paul

Other things:
  • It took me but I finally figured out that I had to mark all of "my groups" as Favorites.  Now it shows the number of  "new" messages.  However, most messages appeared as "new."  So I had to mark all messages as "read."  So now I have a clean slate under "Favorites" and hopefully new messages will appear after the topic name.
  • I just noticed why I was getting an e-mail copy of messages I sent--it is checked in the Cc.  I need to uncheck it if I don't want a copy.    (Mussing:  Interesting how some things in language get carried over even when they are technically incorrect.  Like: Using "Cc" for copy which I believe was a "carbon copy" and "dial" for entering a telephone number when most of us do not have rotary telephones to "dial" any more.)

If we get our notes by email, do we need to make any changes?  And do we have to do all this stuff at the website, or will the older format still be there?

Hi Val, no impact on email users. Not sure what "stuff" you are referring to. The old web interface is generally still available until all features from the old are available in the new.

Let me know if you have any specific questions,

Paul

I do use the web occasionally, so I guess at some point I will need to do whatever needs to be done to stay connected.

Is this group still active? I need help, and I hope I've come to the right place.

I've been managing a small Ecunet group (a family chat) since 2007, when my brother died, who had been managing it. When the changeover to Google groups happened in 2010, I followed directions and got correctly set up that way. The group has been working well, but lately something has changed, mysteriously, in my relationship to it.

I'm still able to post to the group that I manage. Others in the group seem to be receiving my messages. But I don't receive their messages, unless they cc them to me privately. I'd like to confirm that I'm still listed as the group's manager, but I can't seem to connect with the "management" software through either Ecunet or Google.

I went to the page you posted in your initial note, Paul, and looked for the sign-in button at the top right, as you said. I found no sign-in button at the top right, or anywhere on the page.

Using another Ecunet page, I saw the option of viewing "My Groups." When I tried to do that, however, a blank page came up. I don't seem to be part of any Ecunet group.

I've just filled out the Google Form to apply for an Ecunet address (even though I have one). Hoping someone will recognize that I'm already subscribed, and contact me about it.

It would be lovely to get a reply, just to say that someone's reading this. Thanks!
Ann

Hi Ann, I replied to your query in the Ecunet form within 20 minutes of you filling it out. I sent my reply to the sonn...@earthlink.net, did you not receive it? Our notes must have crossed in the ether. Feel free to give a call on the number I provided on that email and we can talk this through. I have a feeling you are logged in to Google using your annla...@gmail.com address instead your Ann_L...@ecunet.org address. Google lets you manage which account you’re logged in with.

Thanks, Paul

Hello,

I just discovered that my ecunet account still exists.  I logged in but see very little activity here.  It looks as though almost all groups are inactive.  It would seem that the most common use for ecunet now is as an email domain.  I remember back in the 90s how important ecunet was for me.  Unfortunately, those days are gone.

Hi Kirk!

I have continued to use my “presbynet” account since the mid-90’s, but only for email. What did it do before?

Lots of groups (meetings) in the Ecunet system. Ecunet exists today as a non-profit subgroup of Gmail. Not much action in the groups, though.
