TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION IN SOCIAL-ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND SUSTAINABILITY

UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA FAIRBANKS

The School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Science (SNRAS) and its Department of Humans and Environment are accepting applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Social-Ecological Systems Sustainability, open at the Assistant Professor level. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in a related field at time of appointment (no later than August 1, 2014).

We seek an interdisciplinary scholar who has a strong background in sustainability science with one or more of the following aspects: spatial modeling of social-ecological systems, risk analysis, integrated assessment, decision-support systems, complex adaptive systems, resilience theory, or vulnerability studies. The applicant should have strong skills in quantitative and qualitative analyses. Significant opportunities exist for working with communities, Alaska Native organizations, and other NGOs, state and federal resource management agencies, and interacting with National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) programs to investigate the interactive effects of climate change, land use change, and changing economies on rural Alaskan communities. Opportunities for mentoring graduate students would also be found with the SNRAS MS in Natural Resources Management and PhD in Natural Resources and Sustainability and the UAF Resilience and Adaptation Program (http://www.uaf.edu/rap/), which offers interdisciplinary graduate training in social-ecological systems to over 50 students.

The successful applicant will be expected to establish an independent and externally funded research program and teach two courses per year, including one course in sustainability science. During the first three years at UAF, the successful applicant will serve as a member of the NSF Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) "Alaska Adaptive to Environmental Change - Northern Test Case" research team, which is examining the adaptive capacity of human communities in changing Alaskan environments.
