Hi all,

We recently added a chrome_settings_overrides.search_provider to our manifest
to allow customers to search for go/links from the extension, but we didn't realize this increases the permissions, and is now starting to disable the extension for our users.

Is there a way to do a quick rollback?
We've published a new version, 2.4.170, however the review process says it can take up to 30 days to review, which would kill our business.

Is there no way to revert to an older version that has already been reviewed and approved, 2.4.67?

Unfortunately, there is no way to rollback. You can quickly give another update with the old code in order to preserve the unaffected user.

Simeon, what about making the web store alert the uploader about this (that this version will cause a permission prompt/automatic disabling, compared to the existing package in the store)?

We uploaded a new extension with the specific permission removed. Would it be faster to upload the same package with the 2.4.167 code, instead of updating the permissions and doing a fix forward?

Yeah this would definitely be helpful as well. There’s not really a way to know if the extension will be disabled due to a permissions increase unless you read very carefully through the documentation.

I believe there is a way to know, it has been discussed here already. I think it involves packing both of the versions yourself and dragging them, chronologically, into chrome:extensions.
But you have to be proactive about it. The web store should already know whether there would be a permission prompt, so it makes sense for it to alert you about it.
Maybe file an issue at https://crbug.com for it?
