why cas 4 comes with a brief documentation? cas 3 has a great cas wiki that is much more comprehensive than 4s and it includes some examples.
as a newbie I am always confused by reading this docs and I have to go back to cas 3 wiki, and figure out the differences ...

What exactly do you find confusing in the docs? Suggest an area of improvement, so the dev team could do the better job to fill the gaps.

Best,
Dmitriy.

Hi,

I agree with Nader. I had a hard time just finding a documentation that explains how to have a CAS v4 server up and running. I eventually found this one for the v3:
https://wiki.jasig.org/display/CASUM/Best+Practice+-+Setting+Up+CAS+Locally+using+the+Maven+WAR+Overlay+Method

In general the documentation of the version 4 is lacking clarity (which files to edit, which sections...) and completion.
I think that everything is already existing but just scattered on github, Jasig and Apereo websites.

And by the way, all documentations and source code seems to have disappeared from JASIG Github. Is it intended?
http://jasig.github.io/cas/ (error 404)

Cheers,
Mehdi

Please do note that project (source code and all assets) has moved to Apereo organization over the weekend. The docs now live here: http://apereo.github.io/cas/4.2.x/index.html

As far as maven overlay installation, the page is clearly linked from the front page of the docs and is available here: http://apereo.github.io/cas/4.2.x/installation/Maven-Overlay-Installation.html

I could agree that the current user interface of the docs does not provide for the best user experience and is something that the dev team will look into and will find better ways to re-design.

As far as comments such as "documentation is lacking clarity" without any concrete examples will not do any good as it's hard to "improve" something based on just general, abstract statements.

Cheers,
D.

Hi,
Thanks for the link.

About the documentation, it is something that I have already asked. It
is like very hard to find examples, for instance, in the old version we
could find Tutorials and HOWTOs, and now we don't. Now the documentation
is very simplified and schematic, before it had like better explanations
to understand the whole system.

Regards!

It's rightly noted that the current docs are just that - the official docs with predetermined format and the right amount of information for features of the CAS server. It is developed and maintained by CAS server developers implementing the software. On the other hand, the old confluence is a free-form wiki which is user contributed, hence you were able to get all this "rich" tutorial style content. May be it would be appropriate to consider ressurecting user-contributed wiki in some shape and form for just this very purpose.

I'm finishing on this topic now and let other devs chime in here if they choose to do so.

Cheers,
D.

You're right Dimitri about providing concrete example. This one for instance, how to set up a CAS server (latest version)?:

  1. Approach: A step by step guide (very useful):
    1. https://wiki.jasig.org/display/CASUM/Best+Practice+-+Setting+Up+CAS+Locally+using+the+Maven+WAR+Overlay+Method
  2. Approach: An overview of the installation and customisation principles that lacks clarity for someone that doesn't see how to do it eventually:
    1. http://apereo.github.io/cas/4.2.x/installation/Maven-Overlay-Installation.html

Of course I'm not saying that it is possible to do a step by step guide for all the possible environments, but at least it helps to comprehend the technology behind Maven Overlay, Java Spring...

Anyhow, I'm thankful to the CAS team for their effort ;-)

for example, here :http://apereo.github.io/cas/4.2.x/installation/LDAP-Authentication.html
it says: The above configuration attempts to authenticate credentials via an authenticator to be defined later, and constructs a final CAS authenticated subject based on the sAMAccountName

and I don't know what is sAMAccountName !

See https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms679635(v=vs.85).aspx

What is your LDAP directory? If you are not familiar with sAMAccountName, chances are for you this would be uid or cn. Or even nothing. That value is optional.
