Rene,

I think and hope (but do not know!) we will get errors, because the compiler
is better, recognises more problems so we will get better code.

Congratulations Erik,

No, you can not download 2.7, but you can have a look at preview screen
shots. (Make sure to maxamize these in your borowser so you get a clear
image.)

I posted these preview pictures on our FTP site for a couple of reasons.

1. To give you a glimpse of the future of Visual Objects 2.7
(Work in progress)
2. For those who could not attend DevConUSA.
3. To use with our 2.7 pre-order form for 2.7 that should be posted next
week.on http://www.grafxsoft.com/vo27.htm

An explanation of the preview screen shots.

ftp://www.grafxsoft.com/vo27preview/vo_project_dialog.gif
This .gif is a screen shot of VO 2.7's new Project Dialog that comes up when
you start VO 2.7. Note this is the second instance of VO27 running on this
machine. The first instance of VO27 has a project call GrafX Sales tools
open, so, the second instance of VO2.7 shows the project as locked. It will
of course allow you to open any other project.

ftp://www.grafxsoft.com/vo27preview/vo27ExplorerSetup.gif
This gif is a screen shot of VO 2.7 Setup dialog. Some new ways of
displaying Classes and Methods in your repo browser have been added.

ftp://www.grafxsoft.com/vo27preview/vo27MultiRepo.gif
This is a screen shot of VO 2.7 showing three instances of VO running on the
same machine at the same time, with project open in each instance. The last
instance is my samples directory, running the very old To-Do list which will
be update by the time you get VO 2.7 in your hands.

Now back to work for me.

It's already there.

I thought about ordering now, but the design was not attractive to me,
thus i went back.

Those images do not show any substantial work.

They do maybe a good job for catching some 2.7 pre-orders.

-

Isn't there any "developement-log" available?

Maybe with a section "low-priority-tasks" or "solution required"?

Thus a VO-enthusiast can contribute a little?

This (and of course an attractive web-site) would make me willing to
place a pre-order.

>Now back to work for me.

I saw on the webpage " 3rd party tools from 2.6 will also be included
in the VO 2.7 release."

Is GrafX aware, that they include 3rd party tools, which have an
unfinished state and additionally no support web-site?

GrafX should insist on a minimum service, or provide it itself. I
think any customer could expect this.

There are VO-Subsystems which are unfinished, e.g. COM Automation
Server Support (the generator ignores Events). Why are those
Subsystems not Open-Sourced from GrafX?

Glad you like the Screen shots. If it only was as easy as just changing the
Icon. Next thing you know some people will accuse me of making them
in Photoshop<G>

Brian

BTW, just in case its not occured to you Beta testers who are already using
these features are not free to comment on them because of their NDA's.

However here is just one comment from the beta forum.....

"Already I am seeing BIG productivity gains just from two
new features: being able to run the 2.7 IDE alongside either 2.6 or 2.5, and
the
ability to continue to use DLLs created with earlier versions of VO for work
I'm
testing in 2.7. (Although the only one I've tried so far is one from
Vo2Ado.)
This allows me for the very first time to test production-sized apps while
VO is
still in beta. Great job!"

Excellent work and good timing as well.

3 Repos open at once and you can select any of them.
That is a great idea.. Often I have to switch to other repos and I have to
sort of remember what I was working on and come back. Now I will be able to
"be more productive".

It is also good timing with a letter arriving here from XBASE today and
discussing there split up of development and maybe a questionable future
reading between the lines. I am sure these developers will be encouraged to
see an Xbase language powering ahead.

I know VO is going to be working for me for many years to come and is still
the central part of our business and the user base will surely grow.

Bravo, Brian

It's inconceivable, how nauseating one single person can be.

An author who was born in NRW (NordRhein-Westfalen - a part of Germany
- Köln, Düsseldorf, Oberhausen etc. ) ca 1870, said about his own
people:

'This is a nation who know nothing, but can explain everything'

That's why I guess he's a German who lives in NRW
I think the best we all can do is ignore him. If he notices (I hope he
does) that he can not annoy anyone of us, he will voluntary leave this
NG.

You and your staff are doing a great job.
(What kind of perspectives we all would have now, if you did not have
had the courage to take over the development of Visual Objects.)

Regards

Walt

For all the other people who lives in NRW , there are also a lot of
normal persons out there but 'ilias' is certainly not such one.

But there are others:

or (more in the category of GrafX)

compare the above with this:

notice: contrariety "GrafXSoft" (this with the funny rotating "X") and

Suggestions?.

Apply the basics of "Corporate Identity".

Remove animations.

Remove the "VISA/MASTERCARD/AMEX" grafics at the buttom.

I am wondering about this comment.

I am an owner of a CAVO2.6 licence.

Is this now "bad news" for GrafX?

Of course i can argue, although i think GrafX should know what i mean

I think many readers, which are not blinded by a few images and their

"I would prefere a list of activities..."

Please speak for yourself.

GrafX is supported by many people of the community in a way that they
would follow GrafX blindly.

Something like religion. Maybe dependency. Perheps a sub-form of
'idiotism'. I Don't know.

What i know is:

if there's just a 1% of the community, which would not follow GrafX
blindly then...

...i have a reason to stay.

...you have a reason to suppress such statements ("Please do us all a
favor and go away").

>The third party has worked very hard to deliver quality tools for VO 2.6 & 2.7

How does GrafX assure the quality ot those tools?

Maybe: "They worked very hard, thus the quality is good"?

What is your QA-Process for 3rd-Party tools?

-

I can speak for one 3rd-party product: COMSDK.

I have nothing against the authors of this product.

I decouple fully: "the authors" from "the product"

The product: "a 3rd-party-product, which does a a task, which the
main-product does not support (directly, with low effort)".

I've 'worked hard' and lost very much time with this
3rd-party-product, until i realize that GrafX(!) operates on a
semi-professional level, without any QA.

I could assume this 'discussion' at GrafX: "yes, it's unfinished, but
we have no COM AutomationServer Event Support, thus include this for
now and we will see."

But i don't like assumptions.

-

Some remarks to COMSDK:

http://www.abeon.com/usenet/comp/lang/clipper/visual-objects/comsdk.html

>Your unfounded criticism of the work we are doing on VO 2.7 is one thing,

My criticism is founded.

I criticize the "making noise with some screen-shots, whilst
forgetting the essence"

I criticize the "secret status".

I criticize the "lack of QA".

>However the criticism of the third party is not to be tolerated.

Of course it is to be tolerated.

This small community will not (and can not) change rules of democracy.

My criticism does not violated those rules.

What about your statements?

-

Additionally:

It is not the fault of the third-parties, that GrafX has a lack of QA.

I criticize mainly GrafX, not e.g COMSDK authors.

>Please if you so unhappy .....go away.

If someone has to high requirements,

declare him unhappy,

and sent him away.

-

I must say:

The statement "Please if you so unhappy .....go away." is neither of a
professional nor of a semi-professional.

It is the statement of an amateur.

Maybe GrafX is playing in the wrong league.

Hello Brian,

I hardly dare to ask it, as our "person non grata" raised the
question, more or less..., but I'll do:

Would it be possible to publish a list of changes - probably compared
to the top 10 and bug reports of users? I can imagine with so many
people reporting not everything could be addressed. (For me, my main
problem is the DHTML which does not work in 2.6 as it drags all
keyboard input to it. This is more important for me than opening
several repros at once, which I like too, by the way. Is that problem
solved?)

Second, many users use ReportPro. I think the majority of the users
would like a major update of this software and are willing to pay for
that. Is there any chance you can get DataPro (or any other party)
prepared to make that update? I raised that question earlier in this
NG but DataPro did not react. From past experience, I know they had an
excellent support.

From what I've seen so far - Paul and Robert displayed the progress at the
Oz Devcon in April - there are many changes.

Also, remember that 2.7 will be built using a new compiler and much
tighter compiler settings. That augers well for 2.7, but I think it also
mandates that the list of changes will (effectively) be in the 1000s. I'm
certainly looking forward to seeing it when it's ready.

I too would supprt this action. I think the best option would be for Larry
to sell the basic 2.x source to either Brian to enable him to provide the
updates, or else to sell the source to those who wish to buy it.

But the decision is one for Larry to make, not Brian. We need to somehow
convince Larry ...

NDA = Non Disclosure Agreement.

Do you really speak about VO here?

Or do you speak about the new core-developement-language for NASA /
FBI / CIA?

I don't believe this.

What about this here?:

{no secret status anymore} ?

http://groups.google.com/groups?threadm=gjhvgv8lc63q03ph6gdo4av7kn9r4m164f%404ax.com

-

You should make the beta publically available.

Or at minimun to registred VO users.

And of course without any NDA.

Cause another meaning is: NDA = No Democracy Available

Thus users / betatesters have freedom.

They can SCREAM OUT their oppinion.

They can discuss about it.

They can detect design faults.

They can decide.

-

Beta should be available to all registred VO[x.xx] users.

No need to sign an NDA !

User can decide based on a real beta if he likes VO2.7 developement.

After that, a user can support developement by placing a pre-order.

This is called: fairplay!

-

>However here is just one comment from the beta forum.....

[...]

beta-forum, should have at minimum read-only access for all registred
VO[x.xx] users.

{no secret status anymore}

transparency.

Unfortunately you don't seem to live the real world. At least not one in
which commercial products are involved. I was involved with the last VO Beta
and willingly signed and NDA. These are important instruments necessary to
protect the integrity of the beta process. It is important to control the
devleopment of products tightly and control what is said less
misinterpretation or misguided actions spoil the process. And yes, in the
real world, that really happens. NDAs are common with all serious products,
within the IT industry and out. What do you do for a living? Do you have any
commercial product experience? Do you have some other motive to declare?

Brian,

Thanks, I'm sure it works just as looks.
Hoping that you will read the answers... May I ask you to open (-to-modify) some
sources in System library. At least Unformat() function, and related ones.
The reason: there are many data types for which we haven't equivalent
types/controls in VO. We can write controls, but types... Timestamps, for
example. The natural way is
define ADODATETIMETYPE := "XA"
(say 2-letters beginning from "X" are users types)
Then I add conversion to the Unformat() in situ, create
class AdoDateTimeFS inherit FieldSpec
and that's all.
Now for using AdoDateTimeEdit I have been forced to customize
Gather/Scatter/Value/FieldPut methods and maybe something else which I forget.
This is too complex way.

Illias,

You don't seems to have to much experience in this area.

Last January Microsoft invited me to an internal conference in Seattle (they
also covered all my costs). When I arrived I had to sign an NDA and also had
show an ID card before they let me sign it. I can assure you it was not any
secret FBI/CIA software in that conference. I think even you know it's just
to protect intellectual properties from competitors. I've been participating
in several Beta programs for different products and also signed several
NDA's so it's almost a practice in the software industry to have NDA's.

I bet all knows Microsoft has public Beta's but long before the products
become a public Beta it has passed several Beta stages at selected sites. We
are one of those sites and we have signed NDA's several times.

I don't follow your logic re data type management. You can write your own
data type converters. In fact, if you have the source code to VO2ADO you can
even copy Robert's. I don't see this as any particular imposition and its no
different to C#, Delphi or C++. Deal with foreign apps/languages and there
will always be a data type conversion issue. Its life.

Geoff,

Well, let me explain more carefully. There are (at least) two ways to realize
non-existing data objects.
1st, which I use now.
a) We read some data object from server.
b) Then we convert it to the some value which exist in VO, and control holds
this converted value.
c) We format this value to show/edit.
And vice versa, unformat, convert, save.
2nd, what I want
a) We read data object.
b) Control holds this object, and we avoid the conversion.
c) Formatting (which in any case include some kind of conversion).
To realize this way, all what I need is possibility to modify the formatting
functions in the System library.

Say "Pro", Geoff. You can win say non-ugly [Ado]Date[Time]Edit classes<g>

Hopefully you know now.

Just to be sure:

They don't, as they post the beta itself.

Thus e.g. a customer can contribute and e.g. decide about a
pre-release-order.

-

Some companies post only screen-shots, e.g. to boost
pre-release-sales.

And keep the beta's under NDA, thus maximum control is guaranteed.

Additionally, "Non-Disclusure-Agreement" sounds very important.

Pick a little "NDA",

'Cosmetics'.

This 'feature' is even not worth the time of discussing it, when
evaluated in the whole context (situation of VO2.6).

GrafX should focus on making the cores stable.

They should focus on add the missing functionality on the programing
level, thus the product reaches "State-Of-The-Art".

I think anyone would prefere the same GUI, but with a stable core and
with some additional functionality.

It looks that concentrating on creating a highly configurable GUI on
an instable and incomplete core needs many resources.

Thus there's no time to focus on the issues which are the real pain
for some developers.

The problem with releasing "beta" software is just that. Its not complete
and it is in a stage of testing. So what does the "new" user make of bugs?
Does he/she assess the validity of the product based on what they see? No.
beta software should be released and controlled to those who will contribute
actively to the product. It is not a marketing tool and anyone using beta
releases as a marketing tool obviously has little faith in their product.

The other problem with wide release of beta is that you cruel your own
market place. Its relatively easy to hack the date bombs and before you know
it, everyone has a free copy.

Hope I can. At least I did it for AdoDateTime objects and my AdoDateTimeEdit
control. The problem is much more substantional. To realize some new feature
(data object, control, ...) in VO we need to modify sometimes a dozens
SDK-methods. This is absolutely abnormal both for work in team and for language

similar consequences is the message reflection. I really hope that Reflection

So here you have lost me. What you "seem" to be suggesting is that in order
to add a new data type and thus use it throughout the language (ie the GUI
classes etc), lots of methods would need to be modified to accept the new
data type. Well I don't think so. But far from needing new data types (the
language is stable as it is), things like ADO that deal with such things...
well... they deal with such things. The rest of the language base is quite
secure. You could, for example, introduce your own date/time object and deal
with it in the language where its needed.... and that is not often. One or
two base Fieldget/put type things I guess. But gee... take a look at VO2ADO
and you will see just that. What new data types do we need that we can't
deal with now? Can you introduce new data types to C++? To Delphi? To
FoxPro? To C#? Is this what you are saying? That you want something other
language bases don't provide?

> in general. Actually we (will?) have a situation in which everyone uses

> VO-dialect (the greatest one is Classmate, I think). Another problem with

Whoa-up there pard'ner! This would be tragic! Its bad enough having
ClassMate out there, which has now totally outlived its usefulness, but to
have multiple versions of VO's GUI classes is 100% counter-productive. .Net
will be next "dialect"... or CULE or something like that but then you have
successfully split the language. Two dialects will be enough: I see reason
for both, but to have individual versions? That's sheer nonsense.

> similar consequences is the message reflection. I really hope that
Reflection

Reflections? What do you mean?

...and Notify on a control? What on earth for? But of course if you are
wanting your control to be responding to a server then I guess you can do
this now but I have no idea what you mean by these "features".

No, nein, ... I don't want new types in VO (esp. complex ones, although int64
and unicode would be great). It is server provides new data types, eg GUIDs,
Currencies, Int64s, FileTimes, Timestamps... Sometimes we need use them, yes?.
Ok, let see the example how we do it in Robert's Vo2Ado Help, AdoDateTime Class.
Now you ultimately must use Notify and Commit everytime in every owner (NB -
remember reflection) window. Thereas I simply put SLE (in WED!) inherited from
AdoDateEdit, and voila tout!

No, it is not enough, absolutely. Returning to my prev. post, 1st way needed
these scatters etc, 2nd which I want, requires unformat() modification. Well, I
have another idea, m.b. more simple to realize by VO-team:

class Control
protect pfnUnformat as ptr // initially @Unformat()
method RegisterUnformat(pfnNewUnformat) class Control
if pfnNewUnformat = NULL
self:pfnUnformat := @Unformat()
else
self:pfnUnformat := pfnNewUnformat
endif

and using this pfn everythere (in dll-sources) instead of explicit Unformat().

You reverces my point of view. Again, I want (2nd) simply inherit separate
control and register my own formatting. And I don't want to change any method in
SDK. Now I (and you, and everyone) willy nilly create own dialect customizing
SDK-methods.

This "feature" available in VC++ many years (beginning from 4.2 version). Search
in MSDN of "ON_CONTROL_REFLECT" and "Handling Reflected Messages". If you want,
I can invent some VO-example.

Igor,

At least in part I can see where you are coming from now...

> No, nein, ... I don't want new types in VO (esp. complex ones, although
int64
> and unicode would be great). It is server provides new data types, eg
GUIDs,

Ok, but I don't see how this helps in "regular" processing. In specialist
code where you use GUIDs, for example, it would be enough to create a GUID
data type (a.k.a. class...) and deal with it there. No problem. In fact,
with date/times, this is exactly what we do now. Hence, VO is doing just
fine.

> Currencies, Int64s, FileTimes, Timestamps... Sometimes we need use them,
yes?.

But not in the sense you are suggesting. Date/Time is the closest we come
and that implementation is not universal across data sources anyway.
Sometimes the time component is a waste, for example, so universally
altering our data data type would not be popular. Ints64's.... well the need
is limited but Frans already has created such data types for VO, and the
math to go with them. Hence, VO already has 64 bit datatypes available
within the language. Timestamps.... heck, we're getting a bit obscure now.
just write your own object.

> Ok, let see the example how we do it in Robert's Vo2Ado Help, AdoDateTime
Class.

> AdoDateEdit, and voila tout!

No. Why. I don't understand your requirement here. What do you mean by
"reflection". But, if you've solved them problem then what is the issue?

> No, it is not enough, absolutely. Returning to my prev. post, 1st way
needed
> these scatters etc, 2nd which I want, requires unformat() modification.
Well, I

But what is the problem! You write your scatter routine anyhow... just add
the extra few lines to deal with your new "data types".

> have another idea, m.b. more simple to realize by VO-team:

> and using this pfn everythere (in dll-sources) instead of explicit
Unformat().

Ok... but right now you can override the Unformat() function with your own
so the source code does not need modification. Equally, you have the SDKK
code so why not just include it and compile it yourself etc. What you say
"'seems" to be tidier but in truth, the same amount of manipulation is
required. The Unformat function is contained in the Runtime lib so you would
need to speak to Robert more on that but as I say... just override it.

> You reverces my point of view. Again, I want (2nd) simply inherit separate
> control and register my own formatting. And I don't want to change any
method in

Ok, but you can do this now.

> This "feature" available in VC++ many years (beginning from 4.2 version).
Search
> in MSDN of "ON_CONTROL_REFLECT" and "Handling Reflected Messages". If you
want,
> I can invent some VO-example.

Can you explain what you mean please? In your words. I don't want to look it
up in terms of some other language. I suspect you are talking simply of
message redirection... in which case, VO already has this "feature"....
although really its just something you code for just as much as you do in
C++.

So let me try to summarise your suggested requirement: you are seeking to
break down the language another layer so that you can add your own data type
handling. You want VO to become even more "black box". Well, I think you can
already. You have both the GUI class base and the language constructs to
achieve all that you want. I doubt the VO dev team will want to head your
way because (a) its not a requirement for enough people, (b) it will be
difficult to support, (c) its a very advanced concept not easily explained
to the masses, and (d) it goes in the opposite direction to ClassMate, for
example. It is a late bound concept and I'm not sure they want to make VO
any more late bound and weakly typed than it already is.

If you want these kinds of features you would need to put your case to
Robert and Brian.

Good luck.

Geoff,

Well, it seems we can't agree without a few Maßes (you know this word, ja?)
Believe you or not, my suggestions for more clear, rich, and object-oriented VO.
With preserving all current features 'by default'.
I really thought, it is so obvious... My mistake probably.

Yes <g>

> Believe you or not, my suggestions for more clear, rich, and

Maybe. As I said, its "your" interpretation of "rich" and its certainly not
my idea of "clear" <g>. However, I'm not the one to judge such things. Make
a business case of it and present it to Brian and the team. At least this is
the nature of VO now under its new stewardship.

Ok, I didn't... and not necessarily a mistake. I am also not saying that my
opinion is also in any way representative or otherwise. You made some hefty
statements and I wanted to draw out the "why" behind them. I'm still not
convinced personally but maybe others are... or have already trod the path
you walk. I ask for the discussion with all genuine intent. Thank you for at
least persevering. I value such input and I suspect there are other readers
who do too.

My mistake was that "I really thought, it is so obvious..." And I believe, this
one only.<g>

I found one example ("redirection"). My last attempt to convince you.
It was question in the NG: "How to select date on double click in the
MonthCalendar". And the answer

class YourWin // ...
protect dSelDate as date
protect dwSelTime as dword

method MonthCalSelectionChanged(oe) class YourWin
local psc as _winNMSELCHANGE
local dDate as date
local dwTime as dword
super:MonthCalSelectionChanged(oe)
// < here I omit verifying, is this MC that one we need - add a few lines >
if logic(_cast, oe)
if oe:Explicit
dwTime := GetTickCount()
psc := ptr(_cast, oe:lParam)
dDate := ConDate(psc.stSelStart.wYear, psc.stSelStart.wMonth, ;
psc.stSelStart.wDay)
if dDate = self:dSelDate
if dwTime - self:dwSelTime < GetDoubleClickTime()
self:YourMethod(dDate) // selected date
endif
endif
self:dSelDate := dDate
self:dwSelTime := dwTime
endif
endif
return nil

Notice that you must add (by copy/paste) this method and variables to the
owner(!) everytime(!) you need this simple feature of control (not the owner!).
Not very object-oriented, I think.

And now how it may be in more simple and clear VO (2.7?):

class MySmartMC inherit MonthCalendar
protect dSelDate as date
protect dwSelTime as dword
method onSelChange(psc as _winNMSELCHANGE) as long pascal class MySmartMC
local dDate as date
local dwTime as dword
dwTime := GetTickCount()
dDate := ConDate(psc.stSelStart.wYear, psc.stSelStart.wMonth, ;
psc.stSelStart.wDay)
if dDate = self:dSelDate
if dwTime - self:dwSelTime < GetDoubleClickTime()
if IsMethod(self:Owner, #WeSelectThisDateByDoubleClick)
self:Owner:WeSelectThisDateByDoubleClick(self, dDate)
endif
endif
endif
return 0

And now all what you need simply inherit your MC from this one in the WED.
Irrelevant to the owner, no "copy-and-paste". More simple, clear and
object-oriented. Of course argument maybe an event object, not a structure.
For me personally the next would be enough:

Class Control
protect fReflection as logic // and access/assign for this

method OnNotify(pNMHDR as _winNMHDR) as long pascal Class Control
// called in Window/Control:Dispatch() only for controls with fReflection==true
return 0L

:-)
We have code to automatically do some reflection (it subclasses the owner
windows and adds a message filter so that a couple of buttons can call
themselves)
but what I am not sure about as a general feature is whether it makes sense
for the library
to mix the styles (intelligence in control vs intelligence in window).

one option (particularly for new messages) is to add the handling
to your in house standard datawindow subclass.

Hai Dick,
Brian promised us a bug-tracking system at www.cavo.com but did not have the
time to get it in place, that was his last remark about this issue. For now
Brian has not broken any promises ever, so I hope he'll stick to his word
and will activate the bug-tracking / info system so we can see what's
happening to our language...

Igor,

Oh no! We must not do that for the SAKE of good OOP. What you need is the
class called ControlWindow and this will solve your problem. You are trying
to mix the nature of a window with a control and this distinction is primary
to VO and to Windows. Just as Malcolm said, we too have some auto-callback
methods for "standard" buttons in our window classes which achieve what you
desire here but they are not appropriate for general language inclusion
because it totally complicates the when/where of message processing. Now
that I see where you want to go with this I would argue quite strongly
against it.

Cheers,

Geoff

It is not MY problem. A little language problem only. Just as the first one -
processing of the external data objetcs.

Oh, yes!
if oControl:Reflection
oConrol:OnNotify()
else
<default processing>
// ...invisible for you, and logic value still equal False by default, and...

Of course this is totally complex.<g> ControlWindow and, as Malcolm said,
"subclasses the owner windows and adds a message filter" much more simple,
effective and natural. <BG>
Now I also understand WHY you so conservative.
OK, gentlemen. Let it be...

I'm not complaining to pay for the upgrade - I just don't remember clearly
