Hi Rene,

Just got back from Devcon USA tonight. It was very good, great food, and
great sessions! Great job and many kudso to Oskar!!! Plans are to have
another one next year around the same time frame at the same location. We
also intend to invite some females next time - there weren't any there, so
maybe they didn't get notified?? <G> There were 28 attendees and 7
speakers. There were 3 concurrent sessions going on at all times and all
sessions were presented twice, so everybody pretty much got to attend at
least 12 different sessions. And I got me a new boat anchor - my laptop
used at the conference (Murphy re-invented himself for me this week... :( ,
but that's another story).

All you need now is a boat!

What happenned to it? Bat flattery? HDD (Headless Disk Drive) ?

Bored MB ?

You might recall that I replaced^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hupgraded my IBM laptop into a
Sony in (well, just after) Whorelando last year.

So ... tell us all the gory details. Didja drop it in the pool?

There's little else happening in here with Djeff away. It's been thankfully
quite pleasant actually. Less inaccurate/defensive/denial postings ... :)

Well, until Willie posts his summary, here are some of the highlights of VO
2.7 announced at the conference. So here's the Top Ten List of highlights
(of course there are even more):

1. All known VO bugs will be posted on cavo.com (and checked off as
resolved or not) - no "secret status" anymore.

2. Lots of memory leaks have been fixed.

3. 5333 error will be broken down into 7-8 new ones to provide us more
explicit causes.

4. IDE - project-centered, no longer using the Registry but PDF files.
Thus open as many different projects as you want in separate windows.

5. Will always ship with the most current SDK.

6. Runtime DLLs will be version specific.

7. SCEditor - will support cut/copy/paste in addition to current options
with right-mouse-click in code.

8. You can include VO DLL's in your EXE if you so choose.

9. VO code compiled with "compiler settings set to HIGH".

10. You got a request for an annoyance to be fixed or a new feature not
already in VO (that more people then just you want included...<g>), then
email Brian with your request. They are now finally in a position to
consider those types of requests.

"Annyoance Reports" and "Feature Requests" should be (as with the "Bug

Thus this should be published in cavo.com, too.

Richard,

I don't know the answer to this question, but I have to ask you why you choose
to rely on a version of product that the owner announced years ago that he
wasn't planning to support in the future. If I had apps that relied on outdated
3rd party products (and I have had), I'd update to the current version, switch,
or just decide to keep that app in an old version of VO and assume the app just
wasn't that important to my financial future.

Because the alternative was even less doubtful and was based on an OCX and
did not allow Hand coded reports in VO.
To me the whole ReportPro 2 or 3 or even Classmate product range are all
dead and at best unsupported.

When was the last time Larry bother to even make a comment.?
I can understand his commercial right to make this decision.. and there was
a miniscule market to buy the quality products that he and his company are
capable of.

Dump the whole lot as soon as you can... this the only thing some companies
understand.

I would prefer Larry sell the source to ReportPro 2 if he care about his
past clients.

So true, and Larry's now working for the state of Georgia. So hopefully
Brian is in contact with him to possibly obtain the source code to RP2 ( and
maybe RP3/CM too?) so that it can be compiled for each new version of VO.

But like Phil and Ginny both said, dump unsupported 3P products and use
current products...

Phil,

I would disagree about Classmate. It comes with complete source code, and with
the last couple of versions of VO all you had to do was recompile the source
with the new version of VO (and sometimes remove kludges either you or Larry had
to put in to work around VO bugs). ReportPro, of course, doesn't come with
source so it's more of a problem. Even if Grafx obtained the source to ReportPro
so new versions compatible with new versions of VO could be built, you still
have the situation where no enhancements are being made, so I'm still not sure
I'd recommend proceding with a product like that. Since almost all my reports
are hand coded using Classmate, I could drop ReportPro if necessary without any
pain.

On the other hand, I do use a number of OCXs in my app. Source code isn't
available, but upgrading to new versions of VO isn't an issue. If somebody is
not using hand coded reports, it would seem to me that using the ReportPro 3 OCX
would be no more risky than the Flipper Graph OCX or SigPlus signature pad OCX
or any of the others I have used across multiple VO versions without problems.
This would be especially true with VO 2.7 since FINALLY the VO DLLs will be
unique for each VO version.

And if somebody IS committed to RP2 for handcoded reports, I'd suggest using
Classmate for those reports as the syntax is very similar to the old ReportPro
hand coded reports, and you have complete control over what you get. You
wouldn't have to move the whole app to Classmate, just build a small
Classmate-based EXE that runs your reports. I did that myself as a interim move
before I had whole apps migrated to Classmate and it works just fine.

Finally, if somebody is starting from scratch looking for a report writer, I
recommend either looking at one that has no dependence on VO at all and that has
a large market share so it will remain viable, or get one that comes with
complete source code, or both.

And that is non productive work for nothing.
Apart from wanting native pdf generation - and we have built in pdf995
so thats fixed ok, there is nothing else that we need - nor the users

So as we are developing and selling a commercial product (as opposed
to writing stuff bespoke for clients) the less we have to fix
unnecessarily the better.

Been playing with MDReport demo (search this NG for download link) and I

or

Just the reports in Classmate..

It would mean a rewrite and testing and shipping the Classmate DLL.

It all sounds too hard for an existing application but has potential in a
future application.. but I have already decided to do all future development

Why should we bother with ClassMate? We DONT use handcoded (i presume
you mean Hardcoded) reports. we produce an outline and let the users
tweak reports the way they want.

Reportpro 2.11 was included with 2.6.
It seems logical that they will include another ver with 2.7.

Why no comment from Brian ? or datapro - i emailed them - no answer.

I am getting too old to change every 5 minutes. so maybe i'll just
stay with 2.6 if 2.7 doesn't come with a reportpro upgrade.

Richard,

I'm not telling you to use Classmate! (Although I do myself and I'm very happy
with it and with cmAdoServer from VO2Ado.) If you don't use hand-written
reports, just use the RP 3 OCX. The users could still tweak the reports with an
old version of RP if I'm not mistaken. Classmate was a recommendation to Phil,
who does have lots of hand-written reports. RP3 doesn't do hand-written reports
like RP2 did - it's Classmate that has the Printer and PrintServer classes so
that's the upgrade path for RP2 hand-written reports.

I wouldn't expect either Brian or Datapro to comment. Brian doesn't own
ReportPro, and Larry has stated years ago (not 5 minutes ago <g>) that he had no
plans to continue support for RP2. The RP2 users have been lucky that Larry
continued to provide free upgrades with newer versions of VO and perhaps he will
again, but why put yourself in a situation where you are depending on it? It's
not really "logical" that 3rd party products of any kind will be provided with
VO 2.7 since their authors didn't make any money from that. Think of them more
as demos, even though some of them are fully functional.
