Dru, the unimaginatively named human druid, was doing moderately well.
She'd pretty much overcome the setbacks of an equipment-to-dust incident
at an early-game altar and the complete lack of any useful herb gardens.
She was just starting her descent through the Tomb of the High Kings,
hacking through the inhabitants of a tension room without much thought,
when a monster that she didn't immediately recognize stepped into the
doorway in front of her.

"Hmm, a dark green 'F'," thought I. "That doesn't look familiar... I'd
better see what it is... Oh, crud."

A quick check of Dru's inventory revealed a lack of appropriate
protection, a panicked Heavenly Fury failed to drop the gorgon, and one
turn later the Tomb of the High Kings was graced with a new statue.

So.... anyone know any good tricks for handling gorgons?

1. Have an amulet of petrification resistance (obviously, not useful in your
case).

2. Run.

3. Kill them really really fast.

Gorgons don't actually breathe gas that often. I've faced several and
managed to kill them all before they even tried to breathe gas.

*sigh* Ah, yes. I have been there.

Missile weapons at thirty paces. Bolt spells and ball spells with a very
large radius would probably work too.

Love and coffee,

I believe a having a high DV gives you a chance to resist, though not if the
RNG hates you.

Indeed. Here is an old link that quantifies this. Guidebook material?

It's in the Guidebook already, as an addendum to section 0.12.1
(resistances).

I'm wondering though if some discussion of gorgons ought to be added to
0.9.4 (particularly annoying monsters). Does darkness help when
fighting gorgons?

Gorgons are quite rare, but I guess that doesn't preclude them from
the annoying list. There was recent discussion about protecting the
PC from their petrification attack; I didn't see amulets of free
action mentioned. Don't those work against gorgons? I always thought
they did. Maybe I've been lucky.

I don't know the answer to that either, unfortunately.

A quick test in g16pre2 shows that amulets of free action don't help
against their petrification attack. Amulets of life saving will save the
PC, once.

In g16pre2, gorgons won't fight back in the dark.

Surely. The last game of my trollish barbarian who was wearing the amulet of
free action ended by an encounter with a gorgon.

And they don't usually use the breath weapon from far away, only
when they are next to you or a couple of spaces away. So try to
kill them from afar with missiles/spells/wands before they get
to you. Use teleport if they get too close.

Q*bert, the level 21 female human wizard, was killed by believing in
the promises of chaos. Sort of. Actually, she was killed by not
reading the Guidebook before dipping leather boots in a potion of raw
chaos at a time when her TO, and thus HP, were significantly reduced
(100HP). She was kind of unlucky, as this was the only chaos roulette
she played during the whole game. Technically speaking, the death
message is wrong, as she was really killed by going to -60 HP, but on
the grand scale, yes, she was indeed killed by believing in the
promises of chaos. The saddest thing was, I didn't tremendously need
improved items; I was just "testing", because I thought the GB didn't
mention the potential damage from !oRC explosions, but that it
"certainly" couldn't exceed 100 HP.

Points of interest -
- I abused stomceptia, devil's roses, and pickaxe corrosion in a big
way in this game, and I'm planning to do it in my current game as
well. It gets boring after a while (I think that the chance of getting
ST from Stone Giant corpses starts falling even before modified ST
reaches 25), but the stat boost is really nice.
- wasn't sure if I could get ST to drop further from starvation than
from "basic starvation" without risking death - can anybody help me on
this point?
- got lightning immunity from a single blessed LL corpse in this game
- NICE.
- had to restart from a saved position twice in this game, once due to
accidentally bumping my power button and once due to the new keyboard
that I bought to replace one I'd spilled water on. DO NOT BUY
KEYBOARDS WITH A "POWER" BUTTON PLACED BETWEEN "END" AND THE ARROW
KEYS. Not if you're playing ADOM and for that matter, not if you
aren't playing ADOM. If you do happen to buy such a keyboard, at least
change your ACPI settings so "off" is linked to "sleep"... (which I
did, after that tragedy).
- do not get distracted while sacrificing, either - lost the elemental
gauntlets that way.

According to DarkFox, strength can go as low as half of its original
value if you want past "basic starvation":

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=av233o%24n03%241%40newsg3.svr.pol.co.uk

I haven't let it go that far, but I know that you can go past basic
starvation without any problem.
