As I was searching for VRML related material, I came across this site which
was of interest to me as it is probably one of the most detailed
environments created in VRML that I've seen so far.

http://www.visites-3d.com/loft-3d/chat3/

Unfortunately the information on the website is in French and I don't know
much else about what was done here.
But does anyone know what were the Applications/tools involved in creating
this environment?

I'm particularly interested in creating large/ infinite worlds with a high
level of detail and that can be added to over time.

Thanks

Loft 3D, the French Blaxxun VRML world for
------- their TV show comparable to our
reality TV shows Survivor, Big Brother, etc.
is rediscoverd:

|
|
| Hi,
|
| Yesterday, I announced here the birth of a new 3d chat here.
|
| http://www.loft-3d.com
|
| Today, I have to announce a sad new :
|
| the imminent death of the same 3d chat....
|
| Let me tell you the short history :
|
| One month ago, we had the idea :
|
| make a 3d chat, based on the TV show
|
| "LoftStory", the french "Big Brother"...
| -------------------------------------
|
| As I said yesterday, The goal was to take
| advantage of the great media impact of
| this show, to present vrml and the blaxxun technology....
|
| We didn't think at this time that our project
| can harm to the TV show or the TV channel.
| On the contrary, we thought that it can be
| a good promotion tool...
|
| But, 2 or 3 weeks before the opening,
| we heard that the TV channel M6 had
| the same project, based on the SCOL
| technology by Cryo Networks :-(
|
|
| At this time, our project became in
| competition with the official project,
|
| which is a paying 3d chat !
|
| So the french TV channel M6 ask us today
| to remove our work...

Ah, what tools to use ...

And for some of us the more interesting question
is how to make more ___ interesting interactions ___
rather than just stuffing more stuff into the scene,

Java is the answer for that !

Java let's you do things like
Chess Players you can control that can move
objects, and finger spelling animation of
Web3d.org's VRML based H-Anim avatars, which
you can do with Java.

Many of the complex scenes are created with
the high end and high priced 3d Studio Max
package that costs more than $1,000.

The above uses VRML EAI / Java and requires Cosmo.

The old style VRML plug-ins and Microsoft's Internet Explorer
have "compatibily" and "security" problems ( or "inconsistencies" )
which is why some people, research groups, educational instutions,

Ah yes ? Then make the loft using your loader,
i'm curious.

One program gathering many tools vs combining several
free ones for an almost-the-same/inferior result
for doing the same task, that may explain why.
I mean: 3dsmax isn't made just for vrml, or even just
realtime graphics.

Plus, if we want to bring pro designers from the outside to
make vrml or x3d (people that don't obviously actually *know* vrml),
we can't tell them to use notepad to create the scenes
(ok i exagerate, there are intermediary tools too, but you
see what i mean).

I did not say the VRML plug-in was the wrong tool
-------------- for this applicaton and in general
I have not done so, the VRML plug-ins are a reasoably
good solution for displaying 3d content with :

high polygon counts & relative simple interaction.

What I'm interested in, and what

Java is good at is:
------------------

relatively complicated interactions & animation
-----------------------------------------------

Thinks like having a human character:

walk, talk, play chess, play darts, do Finger Spelling

These things Java does well and I have done these things
with Java and have been rightly offended that lies and
criminally fraudulent claims and acts from NIST staffers,
the Yumetech.com & Prentice-Hall frausters have betrayed
their professional obligations and violated US laws, and
hurt our community & our country.

if you are interested in infinte worlds, have a look at
http://www.hersto.de/index.html
The world on this page has infinite size.

i tried to make this world browser independend, but in Cortona
the Elevationgrid of the ground does not show guroud shading
and the sky is not faded by the fog. - Can anybody help me
with this?

The world works as follows:
There is an elevationgrid for the floor.
It is repeated four 8 times with the USE statement, so there
is a grid of 9 such tiles.

+----+----+----+
| | | |
| | | |
+----+----+----+
| | | |
| | | |
+----+----+----+
| | | |
| | | |
+----+----+----+

The user is in the center tile. A Fog node prevents
the user from seeing the border of the outer tiles.
When the user crosses the border of the center tile,
a Script moves all tiles by the width of a tile. This
makes the user again be in the center tile. The user
does not see this transition, since it takes place
immediately.

The URL of the world is http://www.hersto.de/MyWorld.wrl

You don't like PROTOs because your Sun VRML Loader doesn't work with
them. So you can't view all the great VRML content created with
PROTOs (from the NIST, the NSF, and the Navy) with your program. But
you can with Xj3D from Couch and Hudson or with a modern plugin like
Cortona.

Bzzt. Wrong answer.

That's another lie.

The Sun VRML Loaders can handle PROTOs.

Justin Couch can lie and does lie for himself.

Justin Couch is a "better liar" than you.

features you want ( apparently so ) and you want
dynamic multiples levels of details with images textures
you're going to have to add them yourself,

fortunately the source code is available ( see below ).

Fracatal terrains may be an interesting and attractive
addition, some links are included below.

My primary interest is the animation of articulated
figures like attractive, scantily clad girls and
Mars robotic rovers, and maybe having one chase the
other over a Martian Terrain ...
