I just installed the latest Debian 5.0.3 i386 from the netinst install
image into a VMWare virtual machine. The debian install seems fine,
and I've installed live-helper and git and such.
According to the webconverger build instructions, I have checked out
the latest webconverger code with git, then cd into the config-webc/
webconverger directory.
from within the config-webc/webconverger directory, typing "lh config"
gives an error "lh_config: unrecognized option `--archive-areas'", and
I cant find any documentation on how to resolve that. In an attempt
to get past the error, I deleted the line from config-webc/
webconverger/scripts/config then reran the "lh config" step and
everything seemed to work
then I run "lh build" from the config-webc/webconverger directory and
it spends several minutes building the USB image.
I have tried to put this onto my USB key and also boot it from qemu,
and neither seem to work.
The USB image is also about 140MB instead of 280MB like the latest
Webconverger 5.9 image from http://download.webconverger.com/
Now I have actually been able to use the USB and ISO images of the
Webconverger 5.9 image and they both work great, I just need to
eventually configure Webconverger to tweak it to my liking to use
iceweasel-webcnoaddressbar, etc
Once I can build a working Webconverger image, then I'll worry about
trying to configure it and deal with whatever problems arise then.
Any help would be much appreciated to get the images built.
Thanks.

Greez, GMF
I did manage to download the live-helper_2.0~a3-1 package and install
that
Now the "lh config" and "lh build" steps both worked fine, and I am
left with a 109MB binary.img file, putting that through qemu and
booting of a USB key both dump me into a command prompt at
"webc@webconverger:~$ " and not into firefox/iceweasel like the
Webconverger 5.9 release does
So it seems like the new 2.0 version of live-helper fixed my previous
problem, but what went wrong now? My image is nearly 180MB smaller
than the Webconverger 5.9 usb image, so what gives?
Should I have run ./scripts/config instead of "lh config" from config-
webc/webconverger ?

I don´t think so.
Try to run "lh clean" then run "lh config" and "lh build".
Greez, GMF
http://git.webconverger.org/?p=build
http://build.webconverger.org
I have to DITTO this. I followed the "build your own" (using Ubuntu
9.02, Webconverger 6.0, latest GIT as my system) only to find out
indirectly that live-helper *BETA* was required. So I solved that
issue and installed the correct "live-helper_2.0~a3-1 package". I am
properly generating .ISO and .IMG files, but when I boot any of these
images/CDROMs, I just get the "webc@webconverger:~$ " command prompt.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
By the way KAI, I have been keeping careful notes on how to do this on
UBUNTU. Once I get this (hopefully) working, can I post them here, or
is that something you discourage. I don't want to post a detailed
"how to" if that indirectly hurts your ability to earn income.
Dan
Have tried that a bunch of times, and I still get just a command
prompt when booting the .ISO / .IMG files.
Dan
I do not know about anyone else, but I would be grateful for this.
Kind regards,
Brandon Blackmoor

You are welcome to post Ubuntu instructions here or even on the wiki.
Post your build log somewhere and maybe I can see where it's going
wrong on your system.

Yours says near line 654:

don't know if this matters, but...

I get that at mine, so it's not that.
Are you building with an unchanged webc config?
I tried it a few times with a customized homepage URL, but once that
didn't work, I reverted to an unchanged version to see if, like
bwknight877, I could build a "default" Webconverger version and then
move on from there.

I still cant figure out quite why though, I was under the impression
that the live-helper tool would download all of the stuff to package
together into the image.

I didnt change anything in the scripts, the only thing I did was run
webc-build.sh and still the package that was build doesnt include any
of the UI stuff and the USB image only boots to a command prompt.
Here is the build log generated by my latest build, it was called
webconverger.2010-01-12.5.6.txt http://pastebin.com/f53bd2f7c
Again the end result is a binary image that only boots to the command
prompt, same size as before at 109,051,904 bytes for the IMG file
So Kai, what is the magic trick on your build server that turns out
the correctly build webconverger packages that none of us can seem to
replicate?
There is no magic trick. :)
Build on Debian.
Btw if you use USB (which you should), you can edit the image cmdline
without rebuilding it.

In your log file for the official webconverger build, at line 591 it

my log file mysteriously has that also absent.
Is there something local on your build system that tells your build
what extra packages to include in the CD that isnt in the git repo for
config-webc?
I can almost guarantee if you take a clean build system, any new
Debian install should work, you will have the same problems as Dan and
I are having getting the webconverger build to work correctly.

I just builded my own webconverger.
Steps I did:
01. cd /home/webconverger/ (my webconverger build-environment)
02. git clone git://git.debian.org/git/debian-live/config-webc.git
03. mv config-webc build (to fit my changing-skripts)
04. add some more packets in
webconverger/config/chroot_local-packageslists/webconverger
(to fit http://groups.google.com/group/webc-users/msg/8a78650579e00386)
05. changed iptables.conf in
/webconverger/build/webconverger/config/chroot_local-includes/etc/
iptables.conf
(to fit http://groups.google.com/group/webc-users/msg/8a78650579e00386)
06. cd /home/webconverger/build/webconverger
07. lh clean --purge
08. lh config
09. lh build
10. waiting
11. checking size of binary.img :-)
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 256M 12. Jan 21:45 binary.img
12. finally pressed this img to an usb-stick
13. changed bootsettings (language to german, website)
14. booted from this usbstick
I can not say what went wrong with your builds but for me nothing
changed.
Here are my building-versions:

Good Luck when trying to build your own webconverger
GMF
I am not sure what your problem is. There is nothing obvious from your log. :/
Post your log online somewhere so I can vimdiff with:
http://build.webconverger.org/webconverger.2010-01-11.5.6.txt
Use http://git.webconverger.org/?p=build;a=blob;f=build.sh
Is you system shell bash?
Next step is to debug live helper with -x and see if you can spot
where it might be going wrong.
The customisation service is in place for people like you. I also
generally charge for support, so please don't test my patience.
So do I. ;)
Hey man, you can stop helping "people like us" at any point in the
process. I certainly don't blame YOU for the fact that something you
gave me for free doesn't work on my Ubuntu system. I just want it to
work, so I'm here asking questions of good people willing to help.
Guess the next step for me is to try it on a Debian VM and see what
happens, and dump the UBUNTU concept all together.
Thanks to everyone that has given me a hand thusfar.
>Btw if you use USB (which you should)
USB is not an option for me.
Dan
I managed to wreck my linux VM yesterday, so today I reinstalled
Debian 5.0.3 from scratch and according to the instructions on
http://webconverger.org/develop/ in step 1 I added the two lines to my
sources.list
Now the contents of my sources.list file is as follows:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main
deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main
deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main
deb-src http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main
deb http://live.debian.net/debian/ sid/snapshots main contrib non-
free
deb-src http://live.debian.net/debian/ sid/snapshots main contrib non-
free
The first six lines were already there by default.
Now with a clean checkout to an empty directory, I again run 'lh
config' then 'lh build' which then fails with the following messages:
E: Couldn't find package libertas-firmware
P: Begin unmounting filesystems...
And the whole process stops there.
I am going to retry the whole build process with GMF's apt sources
that he posted, then with the ones I found here http://webconverger.org/sources.list
(Kai, is this what your build server uses as its apt sources?)
I'll post back again with the results of these two more tests, and if
that doesnt fix it, then I'm still stumped.

Perhaps your net connection might have timed out downloading a
package. Are you using a local mirror?
I am using the ftp.us.debian.org mirror from the first line in /etc/
apt/sources.list, and I dont see any connection timeouts. My internet
connection here at work is nearly a 100Mbps connection directly to
Level3 Communications, so no issues with connectivity or speed.

Sorry, my post of my sources.list was not correct. Here is the correct
one:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list

deb-src http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib
Wich version is your squashfs?
mksquashfs -version
mksquashfs version 4.0 (2009/04/05)
Although I think the squashfs-tools are downloaded and installed in
the building process so local installed squashfs shouldn´t matter.
Greez, GMF
I pay for a 50meg connection and instead I get:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/681551286.png
If it's any consolation, I am running into the same problems building on a
fresh Debian VM install. I've tried a lot of combinations of apt sources
and pulling in packages locally to ensure they can be found and get either
the squashfs-modules dependency error or the update-initramfs error no
matter what I try. I'm going to wipe the VM and start over again another
time to see if I can get it working.
We will probably use the customization service to get our first custom
version going, but management wants to be able to replicate the build on a
local server in the event that the official project becomes inactive (I know
it's morbid, but Kai is just one guy and could get hit by a bus or something
at any time and take our ability to continue building small customizations
with him).
On an unrelated note, are there any known issues having multiple
Webconvergers with the same internal hostname running on the same local
network at once? Our setup calls for a slew of kiosks running at once on
the same network segment.
-Justin
I've never encountered an issue.
If people have questions how a certain customisation is done, I am
happy to explain.
Glad to hear that.
> If people have questions how a certain customization

Well, first I need to coax it to compile. :) I'll try again with a clean install tomorrow.
-Justin
Hi all,
Why the need to rebuild from the ground up? It all works as-is and
you can change the default homepage without rebuilding. You can even
make small tweaks by unpacking the filesystem in the prebuilt image,
perform the tweakage and pack it back up again.
I used this approach to change the boot-time background image and to
strip down the boot options. (Don't even need to unpack for the latter)
While I have the mic I'd like to publicly thank Kai for providing
webconverger. We use it to provide Internet web browsing to delegates
attending training at several of our sites across Europe. We run it on
Asus Eee box hardware. Although I built them, I don't have one at my
location, otherwise I would be more than happy to send you a piccie of
one in action!

How odd. I noticed this problem on my build machine:
http://build.webconverger.org/webconverger.2010-01-14.5.6.txt
When I built manually it wasn't a problem.
Will look into it of course when I get some time.
Apologies, there was a mis-communication between Daniel and I. Or
rather I should have tracked live-helper changes better.
http://live.debian.net/gitweb/?p=live-helper.git
I didn't really see the problem because my test builds worked fine
since I was using a working config/. I assumed the problem was in the
building phase not configuration.
As you can see the daily builds are back:
http://build.webconverger.org/
Enjoy,
Thanks Kai, we're able to build here locally now. I also noticed in the webcnoaddressbar version of iceweasel it is possible to use Alt+D to get a URL box which both allows someone to visit any URL and browse the file system. Any thoughts on suppressing that? Still learning about all of this stuff. :)
-Justin
I am aware of the problem described on: http://webconverger.org/kiosk/
If I get some time I will try fix that problem about breaking out the tabs.
Otherwise I am very happy to accept patches on the extension.

I was able to build properly yesterday using a Debian Virtual Machine
(vmware on my Mac). Was not able to get Ubuntu to cooperate however.
I will continue to see if I can get Ubuntu to work. If I do get that
working, I will post my notes regarding Ubuntu on the Wiki.
