Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Greens of all kinds support the immune
system during the winter.
Hot peppers, sweet peppers, watermelon, strawberry and others nourish
and protect the body when it is hot.
This Hardly Describes a freak happenstance of evolution but rather a

The same dirt and the same sun can produce unique plants with just the
right nutrients for the human body at just the right time.

How exactly does watermelon "protect the body when it is hot?" And
why would god design us to need protection and then provide it in
fruit and vegetable form? Is he crazy or weak?

well guys i guess the game is up.
he's got it all figured out. evolution is dead. this proves it.
Of course broccoli, cabbage, etc have been bred specifically for their
nutrient value. The original plants they were bred from didn't have the
same nutritional value. Also, Broccoli, Cabbage, Caluflower etc are not
harvested in the winter.

Evolution is not a 'freak happenstance" and the plants above have been
deliberately cultivated for specific traits. They evolved with human
selection to meet specific requiremnts.

Plus a lot of human selection for traits, which caused the evolution of
those "right nutrients".
You also forget there are a great many plants that don't provide nutrition
for humans, and in fact are poisonous to humans. Deer, for example eat
poison ivy readily, but it would be damaging for humans to do the same.

What do we need more of when it is hot? WATER. What makes up much of a
watermelon? WATER.
You can be suprisingly short sided at times Inez.
Plus watermelon is high in potassium. A good summer time nutrient,

So what you're saying is that, out of all the hundreds of thousands of
angiosperm species, a bare few hundred have parts that are edible to us,
and that we have practiced thousands of generations of selective
breeding on to make them more so, and coincidentally those are the very
species we do eat. Shocking!
By the way, "support the immune system" is a code phrase for "has no

It's either that or we evolved to eat certain plants at a certain

No. Not entirely. But I do believe that much disease is a nutrient
diffenciey that sucessfully leaves the body in a position unable to
defend itself.
Example:
Replacement of vitamins, minerals and neurotransmitter losses from
tobacco smoking
http://www.freshpatents.com/Replacement-of-vitamins-minerals-and-neurotransmitter-losses-from-tobacco-smoking-dt20080501ptan20080102138.php
"Tobacco smoking also depletes vitamin E in the body. A loss of
vitamin E, and a loss of vitamin C contribute to a variety of health
problems. In particular, the inflammatory process used by the body can
be impacted, and in addition, plasma and urinary CEHCs can be
decreased. CEHC (alpha CEHC=apha-carboxy-ethyl-hydroxychroman) is a
metabolite of vitamin E."
Vitamin A.C,E, the minerals Selenium and Zinc are impariative for the
human body. However, many food additives, perservitives, chemials in
the environment, even some modern medicines rob the body of these
vitals.
Tobacco ---A C E
Laxatives ---Posassium A K
Most startling, floride, that is in most water sourses today robs the
body of vitamin C which is paramount to good health.

Indeed. I've installed a device in my kitchen that extracts the useful
stuff from a watermelon and provides it in concentrated form, through a
small nozzle. Cost a fortune, it did, and some people said I was mad. But
now I have water on tap 24/7, providing I keep feeding the watermelons into
the giant crushing machine. If there's a simpler way of getting water, I've
yet to find it.

Firstly, what Adam and Eve supposedly did cannot be called evil in any
way that human beings can grasp. They disobeyed a silly arbitrary

Second, you're sidestepping the disease issue here. Where did disease
come from, specifically? The actual germs?

Fault? That wouldn't be my word. What I take issue with is the
inexplicable notion that an all-powerful God got a universe that he

Why did God allow this? Just in case you're tempted to say that I

happened the way Genesis says.

Was God powerless to stop this? Was he powerless to start over and
create a world more to his liking? Why does he afflict thousands of
generations not yet born for His own mistakes?
Inability to comprehend the point noted.

> getting back to point of the OP. Many of the foods we eat are

Actually, very few of the foods we eat are perfectly balanced. You have
to eat a varied diet to get all the necessary nutrients, and many foods
contain substances that are actually bad for you.
I see you have chosen not to respond to most of what I said. We eat less
than a tenth of a percent of all angiosperm species, and the ones we do
eat have been engineered -- by us, not god.
Why don't you believe in the doctrine of signatures? It would be

"perfectly balanced" for what? None of the food crops grown
provide a "perfect balance" of nutrients for humans. Also, most of
the crops we grow have been bred over centuries to increase their
nutrients, taste, and appearance. Few, if any of the original crops
that were domesticated provided anything near a "perfect" balance.
For example, modern day Maize is descended from a plant called
Teosinte. That plant still grows wild in a few places, and it's
seed heads are very small, and has little nutrient value. Only by
selective breeding over centuries has this crop become a major
foodstuff. Another example is Olives. The wild olive produces a
fruit that humans can't eat. Somewhere along the way, there was a
mutation that produced olives fit for human consumption. Selective
breeding of descendants of that plant have made olives a important
food crop.
Claiming that plants were created "for us" is just absurd.

That was, indeed, the rationalisation for the DoS: God made things

That's exactly my point. Instead of looking at the Flagella, IDists
should be looking into the shape of plants to find their medicinal
value. Obviously, if God wanted to show that he existed, he'd be

That's just factually untrue. Not being able to do bad things doesn't
make you a zombie.
But none of this has anything to do with disease. Even if you believe
evil is necessary, that doesn't mean diseases are necessary.

If God is omnipotent than nothing happens without his knowledge and
permission.
So why do you think that fact that people need to eat and get
nutrients is proof of God? If people were designed by an omnipotent
magical being then why do we have to eat at all?
And if we do have to eat, why do we have to eat cabbage in the winter
and watermelon in the summer? Why isn't there one food that
guarantees us perfect nutrition? Does God hate us?
Hot peppers, and sweet peppers, have also been bred for size, taste
and, in the case of hot peppers, heat. In fact, just about every
plant or plant product that people consume is the result of centuries
of selective breeding by people. In their "natural" state many plants
just don't provide that much in the way of calories or flavor. You
can find the modern forms of many of these plants growing wild but
that is due to the escaping domestication and, in some cases,
supplanting their wild ancestors. Humans have evolved to eat what is
on hand and learned how to modify what is around.
You know, ASI is showing signs of decaying mental acuity and

More to the point, why did the gods make so many poisonous plants?
Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower happen to be three varieties of the
species Brassica oleacea which have been produced by breeding. Others

We evolved as generalists, our close cousins are too, but we're more
flexible. We are omnivorous, and can live in pretty much any land

we see. You claim that anything bad is our fault ("From the Fall"),
but anything good is God's mercy. Wow. And the world is full of good

Oops, we cannot harvest rice and beans in midwinter, can we?

But antibodies are proteins, and we cannot get complete proteins from
the plants you mention above.
And (contrary to your claim of not having refuted this silliness) as I
posted in response to your gibberish of March 1 (in a thread titled "A
simple question for Adman") the plants you mention are NOT winter
plants. They can be planted in winter but they are harvested in
Spring. You might also plant them in midsummer, in which case you
harvest them in early Fall.
And what about all those people in places that are too hot to grow
broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower? If the plants are grown in hot
weather, they bolt (i.e., go to seed too quickly). In that case,
they're pretty much inedible.

No, I can understand this very well, as mutually dependent co-evolution.
Animals ate the plants, stayed healthy longer, and helped propagate
the plants' seeds for a longer period of time. Then we humans came
along and specifically bred varieties that were even more nutritious for
our benefit.
What I do find remarkable, however, is how we can get stoned on opium
and morphine from the poppy plant. I never heard of animals doing this.
Yet somehow, we humans can use this plant, which grows in the wild, as
a recreational drug or medical anesthetic. Just a bizarre evolutionary
coincidence?

Cats and catnip. Many organisms, from birds to elephants, are
affected by the alcohol in rotting fruit just like humans are (drunken
elephants can do some consideralbe damage). And studies show that lab
animals get addicted to many of the same mind-altering substances that
humans do (nicotine, heroin, cocaine). The problem in nature is that
the sources tend not to be as concentrated or chemically altered so as
to produce a significant high. Wild bighorn sheep will take great
risks to get to and will then grind their teeth to their gums to
scrape off and eat a particular lichen that the local Amerinds also
used as a narcotic. See

Specifically, opium is only present in poppies during a short part of
the season and the plant itself is quite bitter and toxic to most
vertebrates. However, during that time water buffalo will graze on
the plants and become unwilling to work (aka, stoned). After the
season they will show symptoms of withdrawal. Because of the toxicity
of the plants, they don't over consume. But mahouts will put out
purified opium balls to capture wild elephants. Llamas like their
cocoa leaves and coffee and 'khat' were 'discovered' by observing
goats.

Your assertions are not facts. In any case, cabbages and broccoli
were bred by humans over centuries to be more nutritious. Watermelon
may be a nice treat, it's not the "best" for someone in the summer.

These are COOL WEATHER crops.
They are not crops that do well under a meter of snow, which is what
we typically have in the North Atlantic states.
In case you missed the point, there are NO crops that mature in

Still waiting to hear exactly where disease came from. Don't cop out.
Who exactly designed the germs?
Cabbage is primarily harvested for winter use. Why are you being so
obtuse?
Broccoli and all other members of the cabbage family are rated
‘excellent’ sources of vitamins and minerals such as:
folate
manganese
tryptophan
potassium
vitamin B6
vitamin B2
phosphorus
magnesium
omega 3 fatty acids
vitamin B5
vitamin B1 (thiamin)
vitamin B3 (niacin)
zinc
vitamin E
Research over the past ten years into inflammation and cancer has
shown conclusively that vegetables from the cabbage family (especially
Brussels sprouts and broccoli) contain substances that do three
things: dampen inflammatory response in the body, increase the body’s
ability to kill tumor cells, and depress the ability of tumor cells to
multiply. Brussels Sprouts Nutritional and Health Info.
"Cabbage for medium- to long-term storage is usually transplanted to
the field in June or early July for mid- to late-fall harvest."
Just in time for winter. When humans most need the Vitamins and
minerals I mention above the most. Only a designer could have such
forsight.
You still have the problem or your conclusion being an example of a
non-sequitur. The fact that some plants are edible does not mean they
were created by some diety (Or is it "some aliens" today?). That was
your original claim, was it not?
Boikat
"We can eat cabbages cold-stored over the winter, so we won't starve;
therefore goddidit."
Biggest non-sequitur jump seen from you in the past, um, 36 hours. You do
this all the time. You seem to forget that vegetables and fruits that are
farmed have been extensively bred (by humans) for their properties of
nutrition and taste, as well as in some cases their ability to be stored
over winter. Agriculture started about 10,000 years ago and the
domesticated plants are now very different in most cases from their original
wild progenitors.
President Bush (GHWB) famously said that, now he was President, he didn't
have to eat broccoli any more. Does that make him an apostate?

That isn't even a fact. Now what that tells you is that our food wasn't
created by god; it was selected by humans.
Or consider this. Why are all those essential nutrients essential? Why
can't we make them ourselves? A clever god could have arranged it so we
could synthesize those nutrients out of simpler materials, and so
wouldn't need to rely on any fancy diet. Take vitamin C, for example.
Why do we need it? Most other animals can make their own. Why are only
humans (and, oddly, all other primates) defective? And why do we have a
useless remnant of the central gene in the synthesis pathway (the GULO
pseudogene)?
Vermont and New Hampshire farmers often found that huge crops of
stones had matured in their fields when the snow finally melted in
July. So they left. The smaht ones.

Will in New Haven
One of the many problems with all-seeing one's kindergarten taxonomy
that I have already mentioned is that many such names (such as finch)
covers multiple species. Other such kindergarten names (such as tree,
fruit, nut, evergreen, and vegetable) do not match any real taxonomic
group.
But here we see yet another (albeit rarer) problem with kindergarten
taxonomy. *All* the brassica crops are artificially selected
varieties of a single species (Brassica oleracea). That includes
cabbage and kales (leaf-emphasizing varieties), broccoli and
cauliflower (flower-emphasizing), Brussel sprouts, and kohlrabi (root-
emphasizing). All these are varieties derived from the wild mustard
(seed and leaf are used) and NOT separate species despite the dramatic
differences in appearance.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brassica_oleracea
This amazing variety in types of plants is a consequence of artificial
selection in the last few thousand years. That shows the *capacity*
of selection to cause significant amounts of change, even within a
single species. And it also shows that the amount of phenotypic
change is a poor indicator of species formation as defined by the
BSC. That requires a lack or severe constriction of gene exchange
between populations in the wild (aka, reproductive isolation).
They use the mature stones to make stone soup.

Only for the priests who demanded that sacrifice from their sheep.
