Hi Cally, Actually it was really easy at both sites. After years of trying to get nest boxes onto the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, and failing despite excellent contacts, I was delighted when the Westminster Abbey Choir School proposed nest boxes themselves, and bought them too! They are the ones made in Ireland, the name escapes me for the moment. Very robust looking! As for Cholmley Gardens. I knew there was a really good Swift population nesting in the roofs as I had surveyed it for the BTO Atlas. When we moved there I found that they already had two RSPB nest boxes up and were planning for more. I procured about another 35 nest boxes and had them put up in the light wells. They are John Stimpson's, Impeckables, and Action for Swifts types. We think that some Swifts have started to use them. Really cheering isn't it! All the best, Edward

Very disappointing. The knowledge gap on swifts needs and habits is
enormous and there seem to be more organisations with no clue or care. How
on earth do we address this, it seems almost impossible sometimes.

Doesn’t surprise me we just have to keep on banging on!

I’ve commented on 2 applications recently and in both cases sparrow boxes were specified by an ecologist despite in one case it being in the area of the local swifts with vesper flights carried out above the defunct pub and in the other the ecologist couldn’t have missed my 10 white boxes on the my house cable…

Also just sent a suggestion to the local town council asking if they could put a generic statement such as the one below when commenting on planning applications rather than no comment….

Kingsteignton Council wants the local environment enhanced for wildlife by new developments and supports measures such as the preference of the use of UK native plant species in development planting plans, the installation of integral swift nest boxes (also known as a universal nest box) as in British Standard BS 42021:2022 as they can be used by four red listed species (swift, house martin, house sparrow and tree sparrow) as well as unlisted species and the creation of hedgehog highways in property boundaries.

How do we get to talk to the ecologists or the housing associations that employ them or again the architects? NHBS has a good little blog which people can see when they visit their website…..

Perhaps a petition should be started to campaign to promote a single solution…

"Hi Paul. Thanks for getting in touch. We generally don't promote the use of a single solution, as this may not end up being the best outcome in all situations. Most projects that use BREEAM will appoint an ecologist and the project is awarded credits for implementing the measures proposed by an ecologist that enhance the site's ecology. These could include swift boxes or similar if the ecologist felt they were appropriate for the site. Hope that answers your question."

Has anyone come across a 'guide to setting up a swift action community
group'? Our South Warwickshire District Councils may consider (financially)
supporting the creation of swift groups across the district if I can send
them a case study on how to create a swift group for them to put on their -
soon to be launched 'community climate and environment action web page'.
They know of swift groups in Harbury (Amanda), Shipston (Jacey), Napton
(Grania) and Leamington Spa (Joanne). I can write one - but want to check
one does not already exist. Jacky

Hi all,

Myself and many other swift groups in Wales have added our support to this campaign instigated by RSPB Cymru and the North Wales Wildlife Trust.

Let's hope for a successful outcome at the Senedd debate on Wednesday 1st October.

Today I sent an email to Russell George our local constituency Member of the Welsh Senedd asking for his support.

Kind regards

Hi All,

The box does look good (it's copied a lot of the Peak Box features) but, as has been pointed out, it is restricted to being placed under deep and sturdy eaves! Not many properties have these. Does anybody want to feed back our conclusions to the company and the issues if the box is installed other than under deep eaves? I think we should but not sure how well received it will be!

Subject: [SLN] Swift Nest box thoughts pls!

Also it says on their website:
"...can be deployed on almost any building, and may be utilised as part of a new build initiative or retrofitted to existing properties"

Which is really not true as it's only suitable for buildings with soffits, and it's not even suitable for all of those.

The box is ok but the wording therefore needs changing.

If it's "deployed" by fixing to a wall, the exposed flat roof would then make it vulnerable to predators perching on top, water damage etc.

Hi Cally/ all,

Note that unusually this box attaches to the soffit board rather than the wall.

Therefore it's only suitable where the soffit board is wide, at least 20cm from the look of it (I can't find the dimensions),

and the soffit board is sturdy enough that it's not going to sag after a wooden box is attached to it for many years!

All the best,

Mike

Hi all

I was wondering what thoughts people had regarding this swift box please.
I suspect this has come up in conversation before and has possibly been
tweaked - can't quite remember.

Fabulous thank you Edward for the info and well done.  I do remember you trying the Houses of Parliament.  I think it is Genesis nest boxes in Ireland.  They are very substantial and look great painted up!  It is brilliant how this success story came about thanks to the choir folk!
A funny story for you.....i read the article on the Abbey and thought to myself it would make a good case study for someone asking me about swifts on listed/old buildings etc.  The ridiculous problem i have on this one is that the staff at this building are insisting that swifts will fly in to the building and poop all over the museum artifacts.  Now i have suggested they are confusing with swallows that might fly in and NOT swifts.  Then further down the article the chap was saying that a swift came in and flew round his living room!!!!!  Aaagghh!!!  So funny!

Hi Edward,

Are the swift boxes from Ireland the ‘Genesis’ make? We have put a double chambered box on the local Coop. Sturdy and solid and a good box but you can’t get into them to clean them.

Regards
Elfyn
