Hi Matt
Brilliant work J!
Is this package in a form in which it can be uploaded to a server and tested at this stage, or shall I hold off on that for now?

Hi,
I've just uploaded the latest code that I've developed for the SWF
Activity Module.
The most important parts are in moodle/mod/swf/lib.php where it
creates a grade item for any instances of the module where the "Grade
Type" is set to "value". It should also delete those grade items
in
the grade book if the module instance is deleted. The grade item
parameters are set up directly from the module instance form when you
create a new instance with moodle/mod/swf/mod_form.php so that's a
pretty handy short cut. It does, however, have one caveat: if you edit
"Max Grade", "Min Grade" or "Grade Type" in
Moodle's grade book
editor, the next time anyone edits or updates the SWF Activity Module
instance, the changes will be reverted or overridden. This appears to
be common among other activity modules too and I haven't yet worked
out a way round it.
The other major development is moodle/lib/amfphp/services/Grades.php.
This service script insert and updates users' grades in Moodle's grade
book and this is what Flash developers will be calling when they want
to store grades. I also have plans to include a more informative
return value, presently Moodle's default "0" in all cases, most
probably returning the user's grade that was inserted or updated in
the same way that it'll be presented in the Moodle grade book.
I'm also going to include more FlashVars that provide convenient links
that Flash apps. can navigate to, for example, to the main course page
and to the grade book.
The other services in moodle/lib/amfphp/services/ will allow Flash
apps. to retrieve group and user data for things like social
networking. I think it'd be ideal to allow students to have the option
to use their already existing communications tools from within Moodle,
if they want. There are a number of services that use open protocols
and work across different platforms such as GoogleTalk, Yahoo!
Messenger and AIM, which all support VoIP (voice over internet
protocol) as well as chat, messaging, etc.
If you have any questions about the module, what it can do or anything
else, please let me know. These questions are what will shape the
future of the SWF Activity Module!
All the best,
Matt

Re: Testing on your public server. No, please don't upload any of this
onto a public server yet. It's still untested and to be regarded as
unstable. It's unlikely but it's possible it cause problems for Moodle
for functions like course backup and restore. If you'd like to try it
out and play with it on your testing server, it'd be a great help and
you could get started with developing for it straight away.
The next step is to create a beta release package, well two packages
actually mod/swf/ and lib/amfphp/, and get as many people as possible
to play with it and try to break it. Only, when it's tested and
stable, will it be ready for public use. I'm going to update the word
search app. so that it loads XML and pushes grades so that people can
see that the concept works. I'll probably sort out some kind of
graphic drag'n'drop app. as demo too. That way developers can look at
the code and see how to develop their own apps.
I'm also looking into developing a widget for Adobe Captivate that'll
provide Moodle grade book support. I've noticed that Captivate 4 now
publishes its demos as single SWF files, removing the interdependency
problems that prevented Captivate from working with the SWF Activity
Module before. This could be a SCORM killer :) It might not be
possible though, so I'll have to look into it more when I've got the
time.
If you don't yet have a development server installed on your personal
computer, I recommend it. It's quick, easy and relatively painless. If
you're on a PC, I recommend XAMPP since it configures everything for
you. I haven't tried it for Mac or Linux so I can't comment on those.
Just remember to give it network access (click on "allow", not "block"
or it won't work) and Skype has to be off-line every time you start up
the Apache server.
XAMPP: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
Moodle + XAMPP packages (less flexible because you can't install other
other web apps. i.e. Wordpress, Joomla, etc.): http://moodle.org/downloads/
Hope this helps.
All the best,
Matt

Hi Matt
Many thanks J
We actually have a separate test Moodle on the server which we use to test stuff before it goes onto the real Moodle (or not). So it’ll be perfectly safe.
I have also downloaded the files (presuming I need them):
amfphp-1.9-beta.zip
flashvars_word_search_20090415.swf
along with the sam service library readme: README_html - swf-activity-module - Project Hosting on Google Code.htm.
But do I need this readme information, or is it out of date with
this current beta? If I do need it, just to see if I’m understanding things,
in the readme should “$obj[‘instance’] = 76” not read “$obj[‘instance’]
= 10” to match the example? (“..//view.php?id=10”). Or
have I missed something?
Shall try get to testing the beta as soon as I can, but I’ve a lot on at the mo’. Shall let you know how it goes.
All the best
Cathy
