Sabaidee Mangjilor,

It pains me to see people such as these three
http://aircommandoman.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/cimg4093.jpg,
other VN war vets and other Lao elders who are so vocal about about
human rights violations but yet they are not vocal about the US' lack
of interest in genuine effort to eradicate the bombs that the US and
these same three guys helped drop on Laos.

It only takes a few minutes and a stamp to make your voices heard in
DC.

The young, the old, and the ruralpoor of Laos are still silently
suffering everyday from the gift from uncle Sam. The gift that I call
"the gift that keeps on giving."

I left Laos when I was little, I don't remember Laos. However I went
back to Laos recently. Looking at the pictures of the stores and
dirty street of Long Cheng it just looks like the Laos of today.
Incredible after over 30 years Laos still look the same. The dirty
unpaved roads with basic tore front and people walking around with no
shoes. So much for the 10% annual growth. Looks more like 0% growth
since 1975.

sbf,

You are right. We should point fingers at the RED and WHITE princes
that caused all of this. Hundreds of thousands of lives were wasted,
millions of American bombs, Chinese and Russian landmines are still
buried deep in the Lao heart lands. They princes were the root of the
problems of power greed. Now they were vanished. At the end Laotians
become slaves to their master Viets. Commies turn the god given
beautiful landscapes into lakes, sell anything that motherland can
provide to benefit the idiots of few at the top, while thousands of
poor folks roaming in the street of national capitals begging for
money and force the young lads to trade their precious things for $.

sbf and vong,

Thank you for your responses.

Yes, you are correct. I was pointing a finger, a little. If you two
are saying what's done is done, I agree. What's done is done. We
can't always undo everything that's been done, but in this case the US
can undo some of this. The US needs to show genuine effort of their
intentions to do something about this "gift that keeps on giving" from
uncle Sam.

My daughter's foot and leg was scalded when she was boiling water last
month. After she got patched up, the doctor gave her a pair of brand
new aluminum crutches. She didn't need them to walk and she only
played with them for a couple of days. In Laos, a villager's leg was
blown off by one of these bombies and after he was patched up, he has
a makeshift home made wooden crutch made from a branch of a tree. We
all saw this in "Anthony Bodain's No Resevation to Laos."

I say the US should make sure that these people at the very least get
new crutches, better would be for them to get prostheses. Best would
be for them to get protetheses and training and support for new
career.

Below are a few of the many email exchanges between my friends and I.

---------------------------
From Chanapa to the group:
Hi Somxay Paul and Sen,

Thanks for your interest and passion on the issue. It is a sad
history, but we can help to make it a better future for the villagers
still living among the bombs. Like yourselves, there are many, many
people around the U.S. who want to do something and have already
really helped to raise awareness! Nearly 4 years ago, our very own -
Ai Jok was instrumental in helping to get the project up and running!
He helped by creating the logo, website v 1.0 and our national
traveling exhibition! (We might've worked him too hard but are so
grateful for all his support!) Ai Jok and the support of so many
dedicated people from around the country have helped Legacies to
provide information about the history of the bombing and current
cluster munitions problem in Laos. And in the near future, we hope to
help get the U.S. to increase funding for clearance, education and
victim assistance to Laos.

I'm attaching a Fact Sheet for those who might want to learn more
about the history of the bombing and the current cluster munitions
problem in Laos. http://www.legaciesofwar.org/files/ClusterBombFactSheetOct2008_0.pdf

And the movie "Bombies" you mentioned below is probably one of the
best films on this issue. We are working to make the Lao version
available soon!

Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone soon!
Channapha

Good morning Lae et al,

I'm so glad that one of our own, Chanapa, has taken the lead to do
something about this. We are very proud of you Chan.

This issue about, I call it "The gift that keeps on giving", from one
of our benefactors, the US, is a gift that we want the giver to take
back. We want the US to do more to erradicate the UXO in Laos. The
young, the old and the rural poor in Laos are suffering the most.
Like Lae said, it is a silent suffering. It is very important that we
become their voice. Let's each of us do something, write a letter at
the very least. A few minutes of your time and one little stamp and
you're done! Let's also support our friend Chanapa as Lae has
suggested.

I want to ask the US to do more, much more than they are already doing
concerning this issue. I want us all to erge them, shame them and
force them to address this issue with more interest and concern.

Thank you all, enjoy your day off.

Hak Pang,
Somxay

PS

Lae, a friend of mine has given me a copy of "Bombies" and several
years ago I had uploaded it to freedrive.com and posted it in SCL
before, but I have since lost it and the site that I uploaded it to
has since deleted it due to lack of viewers, I think. I would
appreciate you making a copy for me.

Somxay, Sen and All,

It is a shame that the U.S. Government does not fully accepts and
recognizes of its dirty secret bombing raids during the Vietnam War
that left our country with the dubious distinction of being the most
bombed country on earth – In the history of our planet for that
matter. It's estimated 80 million cluster bombs didn't explode when
they fell between 1965 to 1975. Every year so many innocent Laotians
died as result of these cluster bombs. These secret bombs create
silent suffering for our people that the world hardly ever heard.

Somxay's suggestion of doing something such as writing to your reps is
a good idea. For those of you who don't already know, one of our own
(Channapa Khamvongsa) in our community is the founder and project
director of Legacies of War, http://www.legaciesofwar.org/. You can
get involved by connecting with this group. Since the founding of
this organization, Chan and her staff have done a lot at the national
and internal level to raise awareness about the history and the
casualties of this nightmare. Next time when you see Chan, you can
talk to her about it.

Also there is a documentary film produced by the Mennonite Central
Committee call "Bombies" which has been aired on PBS several times. I
have a DVD if any of you want a copy. You can check out the clips of
Bombies at http://mcc.org/clusterbombs/bombies/. Be forewarned that
some scenes are quite gory and that you will be pissed and angry with
U.S. Government after seeing this movie.

Thanx

Paul

It was so nice to see my old town of Long Cheng.. The road I travel
every day to the Long Cheng market... I am thousand miles away and my
old freinds Khamu people still stay in the same old town.

I still remember the day the Caribu airplan fall down at the Long
Cheng airport... I wish my school at Long Cheng Tai still exist...
