THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED--
UA hightailed it off the internet for some very ugly reasons. He said some
very nasty things about a Real Scientist, and got called out for it. Then
he got his athiestic clock cleaned really good. He then had a nervous
breakdown in a most public and shameful way right here on sci.physics. In
colorful language, UA suffered a rare personality disorder, where his ego
expanded until it was greater in size than the known universe, whereupon it
then promptly collapsed under its own weight and poor UA got absorbed into
the black hole that resulted, never to be seen again. We hope.
OR THIS HAPPENED--
UA is currently sitting in a padded room located in some damp, dark
government top secret research facility, drooling all over himself and
counting all the diamonds he thinks he made with the machine that runs on
crayons that is sitting in his garage.... I know, it is not right to poke
fun at someones mental illness, but I just can't help it... :-)
OR MAYBE THIS--
UA suffered a religous conversion, flew to Vienna for a complete sex change
operation, and is now living happily as someone's cantankerous wife, chained
to their bedpost, barefoot and waiting to get pregnant.

There's no demonstrated correlation between intelligence, or lack of,
and participation in usenet.
Uncle Al had a meltdown and embarassed himself to academia. The correct
followup is maintaining a low profile for a long time and an apology,
but of course apology does not exist in Al's lexicon. With his departure
there was a reduction in the noise level.
Sam, I think some good things do happen here and those make it worth
staying. But there are days......

Search google groups for a sci.physics post called something like
"River of Shit" starting at about that time.
Shortly after someone calling himself "Old Man" announced with
disgust that he'd no longer participate in sci.physics discussions,
on account of its falling standards, Uncle Al did likewise, although
I think we've seen fleeting glimpses of Al since.
As someone else said in this thread, it has good(ish) days and
bad days, and even if the discussions are often not up to much
there are some good posts and useful links.

Uncle was screening this newsgroup when I went on-line in 1995.
Thats 10 yearsx7x24x365 doing work that I used without expressing
may gratitude. Now I am doing my own screening and miss this
work of his very much. However, the work had become a full-time
job and I don't blame him for quitting.
As a result of that thread, I'm reexamining what I'm doing.
