Tell me this wasn't the most talented rock trio ever...

Of course. But they had no restrain.

What about Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream and Rush?

Trio? Once again poor Modest Mussorgsky, the so-called "fourth ELP
member," gets no credit.

Well, you did say he's Modest ...

Prog has always plundered the classical masters. Think of it as
tribute and bringing art music to the masses.

Unquestionably the most talented rock trio, especially LIVE. The ELP
shows in March-April 1973, and December 1973 through July 1974 are un-
freaking-believable. What a shame that Keith Emerson has had
debilitating problems in his right hand since 1994; the muscles in his
hand contract causing his fourth and fifth fingers to curl up
uncontrollably. Same thing happened to Leon Fleisher, Gary Grafman,
and a slew of other classical pianists' right hands.

At least he put in his best work before the nerve problem. 24 years of
excellent music making is a lot more then most could hope for.

I would add 1965-1970 to that (pre-Nice and Nice days, of course!)

And don't forget Maurice Ravel -- it's likely that many more people
know this music through his orchestration of Pix at an Ex, than have
heard Mussorgsky's original piano version. For those seeking a piano
version, my top pick is Byron Janis on Mercury (the CD also includes
the orchestral version).

Zeppelin/Stones etc ripped off blues artists. Yes/ELP etc ripped off
classical artists. Ripping off is cool, if you make it sound even
better.

Mainstream critics hate prog and ELP the most. It is kind of sad. ELP
will never get into Rock N Roll HOF, nor would Yes

The best thing about the Ravel orchestration is the excellent alto
saxophone part in "The Old Castle." It's one of the most famous sax
parts in the orchestral repertory.

There should be a prog HOF.

I also loved how he handled the wheedling of poor Schmyule (sp?), and
especially those opposing ascending /descending figures near the
climax of The Great Gate of Kiev. Other composers have tried their
hand at orchestrating Mussorgsky's great piano score, but none have
topped Ravel, in my opinion.
