Dearest Friend, Family, or Supporter of Maryland Ultimate:

After several years of hard work, the University of Maryland Women's
Ultimate Frisbee team (Helpful Corn) made history two weeks ago by
being the first Maryland team to ever earn a spot at the UPA College
Championships. This National Championship features the best sixteen
University teams from North America and is the highest level of
college competition in the country. Helpful Corn has worked hard this
semester, with 3 hour plus practices, track workouts, and conditioning
sessions. They learned new plays and studied strategy. They did
everything in their power to make themselves the best team they could,
and they succeeded, finishing the semester with a 26-3 record and one
of the longest winning streaks in the country. While they've come
this far, now is the time when they need YOU!

As is usually the case, the Maryland Ultimate Frisbee club finds
themselves short of funds at the end of the school year. The
University of Maryland will assist them in attending the national
competition, but cannot provide sufficient funds to cover all of their
costs. Nationals is being held in Boulder, CO (May 16-18), so not only
does the team need money for the tournament fee and hotels, they need
money for airplane tickets and car rentals as well.

I'd like to ask you all, as supporters of Maryland Ultimate, to
consider making a personal donation to the ladies of Helpful Corn and
help send them to Nationals! Please think about what you can give, or
consider "sponsoring" a player by giving $35 -- the tournament fee for
an individual player.

To help send these spirited ladies to Colorado, please make checks
payable to "Maryland Ultimate" and send to Amy Hudson, the current
treasurer, at:

4310 Knox Road.
Apt. 4404-B
College Park, MD 20740

You can also go here to make a Paypal donation:

Details about the tournament and the competition Maryland can expect
to see at Nationals can be found at http://college2008.upa.org/.
Furthermore, Helpful Corn was recently featured in a front page
Diamondback article detailing the team's success.

If you know of any other Maryland Ultimate fans out there please
spread the word. Any support you can provide will be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you for your consideration.
Love and Frisbees,
Cara Martin, for Helpful Corn

You can always ask the Mens team for money... just take a number.

One thing that MIGHT help you gals get money- if applicable remind
people their donation will be tax deductible. Sometimes this helps
when trying to encourage people to donate.

Good luck!

As a professional non-profit fundraiser...I would very seriously
recommend AGAINST making such a statement unless you successfully
applied to the IRS for tax-exempt status. I seriously doubt an
ultimate team would have tax-exempt status. You're not asking for
money that will be used for the public good, you're asking for money
to take you to an athletic competition.

Peace,

Depends how their fund raising is set up. If it is through the school
they might be able to have tax-exempt status, since I imagine the
University of Maryland is non-profit. So if the school collects the
money and distributes it to the team, then it might be classifiable as
non-profit. Pretty sure this is how it work in the Univ. of Calif.
system. If the team is directly collecting the money, and spending
it, then probably not.

yah, that's what i was going for.
since our ultimate frisbee team at Tennessee Chattanooga is run
through the school donations are considered to be to the school. not
sure if it's 100% legit but, our club has used our schools IRS tax
exempt #.

i'm sure it varies from situation to situation tho.

If nothing else, I applaud the namesake. Taken from Daria I presume?
Were you guys Mystik Spiral before? Hope you raise the funds. Try a
throw-a-thon on campus for some long period of time. Make yourself
visible in the eyes of your fellow students. Thats what the U of
Oregon men's team did last year to raise money. And of course you
could always just ask family members for money.
