I do not for a second believe that W.G. was a racist. Accounts of his
benevolence and genuine humanity are legion. I highly doubt that skin
colour, even in those heady days of blinkered bigotry, would have
changed that.
Grace played cordial host at Crystal Palace to the West Indians for the
opening match of their 1900 tour of England and even delivered a rare
speech during the luncheon (quite something given how rare W.G. speeches
were).
He was also a close china plate to the Indian Prince Ranjitsinjhi (who
suffered no small amount of racism in the early stages of his British
residence). There exists a charming photograph of Ranji and Grace at
Shillinglee Park, the latter embracing the Indian culture by replacing
his omnipresent M.C.C. cap with a turban.
Although he didn't play against the 1868 Aborigines, W.G. joined in a
light-hearted ball-throwing contest with them, and was gracious enough
to accord the unequivocal all-time Damien Hirst Drum in /Cricket/ to
Billy the Aboriginal. (I say "unequivocal" because next to G. Brown's
second-placed 137 yards is the bracketed appendant "doubtful".)
W.G. was obviously a singular example, though. In Lord Hawke's

C.B. Fry, too, was far from innocent, although you'd think, given his
close ties with Ranji, that he'd be highly unlikely to entertain

For all he was fascinated by Indian beliefs and customs (not least of

naturally better than black ones: "We do not wish to cast any undue

that, so far as speed at an athletic meeting is concerned, the white man
has an immeasurable advantage over the black, and quite conceivably the
absence of brain quickness may explain the matter."
In 1948, during a BBC radio broadcast, Fry had a tremendous row with
John Arlott, who had taken exception to his comments about "the American
darkie Jesse Owens". The broadcast was immediately disrupted, and Fry
was furious. Dubbing Arlott an extreme case of "gross stupidity" and
"impudence", he argued that the term "darkie" was far less offensive
than (har, har) "negro", which, he said, sounded too much like "nigger".
His relationship with Arlott fell to pieces thereafter.
Fry's links with Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany are a source of great
intrigue and concern. His only novel, /A Mother's Son/, contains
numerous traces of anti-semitism. A character named Goldstein, for
example, is portrayed as an "oily" and untrustworthy cheat. Fry also
seems to have seen much merit in autocratic rule, and endeared himself
greatly to the Hitler Youth.
